The College of Business is host to five academic departments: Accounting, Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law, Information Technology and Decision Sciences, Marketing, Logistics, and Operations Management Management. It offers seven undergraduate programs, fourteen M.B.A. and master of science programs, and six Ph.D. programs. In Fall 2011, the college moved into a new state-of-the-art Gold LEED certified $70 million facility named the Business Leadership Building. The college is accredited in both business and accounting by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Businessaccreditation for the former stretches back sixty years and the latter, thirty-four years .
The college of business was renamed in 2019 to the G. Brint Ryan College of Business following a gift from alumnus G. Brint Ryan, alumnus and UNT System Board of Regents Chairman. The College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism houses the largest merchandising program in the nation and one of the largest hospitality and tourism management programs. The college offers bachelor’s degrees with majors in digital retailing, home furnishings merchandising, hospitality management, event design & experience management, and merchandising, and master’s degrees in hospitality management, international sustainable tourism and merchandising. It has the nation’s first bachelor’s in digital retailing and master’s in international sustainable tourism. The college was formerly known as the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management.

North Central Texas College is a public community college based in Gainesville, Texas. Starting in the 20192020 school year, North Central Texas College partnered with First State Bank to open a branch campus in downtown Denton. Located in the former Denton Record-Chronicle building, the campus focuses on accounting, business, biology, early childhood education, kinesiology, psychology, and general studies.
Since 1899, the Denton Record-Chronicle has been the newspaper of record for Denton. When it was acquired by Belo Corporation in 1999, the newspaper had a circulation of 16,000. The North Texas Daily and The Lasso provide daily and weekly news to students at the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University. The city’s public television station, Denton TV , covers city council meetings, restaurant scores, high school football, and educational programming. UNT’s television station, ntTV, is broadcast on local channels provided by Charter Communications and Verizon Communications. ntTV News is broadcast live Monday through Thursday.KNTU 88.1 FM is UNT’s official radio station. First aired in 1969, the station primarily plays a mixture of jazz and blues and covers local sports and news.
The Intensive English Language Institute
Established in 1977, IELI is the largest intensive English program in North Texas, serving international students who wish to learn academic English in preparation for university studies in the United States. IELI is a constituent of UNT International Affairs, an interdisciplinary unit and exponent of globalization in higher education that provides leadership and support of international teaching, research, and study-abroad initiatives. As of July 2015, IELI has been located in Marquis Hall on the UNT Denton campus.

Mayborn School Of Journalism
Curricular journalism at North Texas dates back to 1945. As a department, Journalism eventually became part of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Graduate Division of Journalism began in the fall of 1970 under the direction of Reginald Conway Westmorland, PhD . In 1999, twelve years after the death of Frank W. Mayborn, its graduate program was renamed the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism. On September 1, 2009, the entire program was elevated as its own collegiate unit and named the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism. Eight Pulitzer Prizes have been won by five of its alumni, among whom are Bill Moyers and Howard Swindle. Other notable alumni include Samir Husni and Cragg Hines. Since 1969, the news-editorial sequence has been accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and since 1986, the entire program has been accredited. The school is in its seventeenth year as founding host of the annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference.
Virginia Ellison a North Texas alumna who also taught English and journalism, sponsored the Student Press Club, and served as director of publicity at North Texas from 1942 to 1944won a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship in 1945, the year she earned a degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

The name “Mean Green,” now in its fifty-fifth year, was adopted by fans and media in 1966 for a North Texas football defensive squad that finished the season second in the nation against the rush. That season, Joe Greene, then a sophomore at North Texas, played left defensive tackle on the football team and competed in track and field . The nickname “Mean Joe Greene” caught-on during his first year with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 when Pittsburgh fans wrongly assumed that “Mean Green” was derived from a nickname Joe Greene had inherited while at North Texas. The North Texas athletic department, media, and fans loved the novelty of the national use of its nickname, and its association with Joe Greene’s surname and university’s official school color. By 1968, “Mean Green” was branded on the backs of shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, and the cover of the North Texas football brochure.

Segregation And Jim Crow Era
After the Civil War, “Freedmen Settlements” were started throughout the South. One Freedman Settlement called Quakertown, thrived just south of what is now Texas Woman’s University until around 1920, when the residents were forcibly removed by the City government to make way for a park. Quakertown’s Black children were served separately from white children by the Frederick Douglass School. Originally scheduled to open in September 1913, it was mysteriously burned down the Sunday night prior to the scheduled opening. It was rebuilt and in 1949 renamed the “Fred Moore School”.

College Of Health And Public Service
Previously called the College of Public Affairs and Community Service and before that the College of Community Service, the college adopted its current name in Fall 2017. The college is organized in seven departments: Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Behavior Analysis Criminal Justice Emergency Management and Disaster Science Public Administration Rehabilitation and Health Services and Social Work.
The department of public administration is home of the nation’s first comprehensive degree program in emergency and disaster management that launched thirty-eight years ago . The degree incorporates interdisciplinary curricula from other colleges that include applied philosophy and environmental ethics. The degree is tailored for both management practitioners and researchers and is collaborative with the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region VIbased in Dentonwhich oversees Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Denton became home to FEMA when its predecessor, the Office of Civil Defense and Mobilization, constructed the nation’s first Federal underground defense center in 1959.
The college is host to five research institutes, one being the Turkish Institute for Police Studies . The institute has, since its founding in 1999, been based at North Texas. Its institution is a collaboration between the Turkish National Police and U.S. universities in areas of terrorism, organized crime, narcotics, administration, intelligence, and investigation.

North Central Texas College is looking to open a new location in the old Denton Record-Chronicle building in downtown Denton. Construction for the project is planned for April 2018 and classes are expected to start fall 2019.
This sleeping giant here at NCTC is being awakened and being recognized even more so, which is creating a great partnership with UNT and TWU, said Roy Culberson, associate vice chancellor of operations at NCTC. Its giving the opportunity for our community of Denton to be more involved with their education.
The board of regents for the NCTC district approved a notice of intent to purchase a leased property during their meeting in October. NCTC will work with the Martino Group, the property owner for the desired location, and their sister company, Links Construction.
We approved a resolution to enter into a lease agreement with the developers to lease that building and for them to go ahead and move forward with predesign work and work with us to get a layout, Vice Chancellor of Administrative Affairs Robbie Baugh stated in a press release.
The Denton campus will offer core classes that are transferable towards an associate degree. NCTC has a partnership with UNT and Texas Womans University that allows students to transfer without losing credits. The partnership also gives students the opportunity to be concurrently enrolled at all three institutions.

Federal & State Government
Following the 2021 redistricting process, new and significantly different political boundaries were set in place for Denton County. Starting in 2023, most of Denton will be represented by U.S. House 13th Congressional district. The southwest portions of the city will be represented by U.S. 26th Congressional district.
Almost all of the city is in the newly drawn Texas House district 64. Some portions of south, north, and far east Denton are in either Texas House districts 57 or 106. Similarly, all of the city is in the new Texas Senate district 30, except for some western portions that are in district 12.
Several Texas state agencies have facilities in the city, including a Texas Workforce Center, a Texas Department of Public Safety office, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice office, and a Denton District Parole Office.
The Denton State Supported Living Center, formerly Denton State School, is the largest residential facility for people with developmental disabilities in Texas. The center serves an 18-county area and employs approximately 1,500 people.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has its Region VI headquarters in Denton.
College Of Visual Arts And Design
The College of Visual Arts and Design has the 10th largest enrollment of any art and design school accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and the second largest of any that awards doctorates. The college name changes reflect the curricular expansion of programs. In 1992, what then had been the “Department of Art” within the College of Arts and Sciences, became “School of Visual Arts ” and in 2007, it became the “College of Visual Arts and Design.” Art classes began at UNT in 1894, four years after its founding. Master’s degrees were initiated in the 1930s and the first Master of Science degree in art was awarded in 1937. Since 1972, the college has served as curator and custodian of the Texas Fashion Collection that was started by Stanley Marcus in 1938.
