Cfcc To Offer New Historic Preservation Construction Program

CFCC Chemical Technology Program

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cape Fear Community College, in partnership with the nonprofit Historic Wilmington Foundation, will offer a new certification program focused on repairing and maintaining historic buildings in the Wilmington area.

Offered through the Workforce Training program at CFCC, Intro to Historic Preservation is the first of three 96-hour courses that will allow students to earn a certificate in Historic Preservation Construction.

Wilmingtons built history makes this city extraordinary, says Beth Rutledge, HWF Executive Director. Training more contractors who understand how to work with old buildings helps to strengthen our local job market and ensure a strong future for our historic homes and businesses.

Registration has begun for the first course, Intro to Historic Construction, and the class will meet twice a week at the CFCC North Campus in the evenings from January 12 through April 29, 2021.

The hands-on program will cover topics such as wooden window repair, masonry, roofing, and sustainability. Guest speakers will include experts on the architecture of Wilmington, and understanding historic districts.

The preservation of our historic buildings is so important, adds Jim Morton, CFCC President. Helping our citizens learn to restore and maintain these structures is vital to Wilmingtons economy and to our communitys story. CFCC is proud to partner with Historic Wilmington Foundation to provide this unique opportunity to our students.

Estimated 2 Year Cost At Published Tuition

At the current published rates, an estimated total tuition, fees and living expense price for a 2 year associate degree at Cape Fear Community College is $36,012 for students graduating in normal time. This methodology for estimating the 2 year cost is a straight multiple of the most recent reported annual total cost and does not factor in tuition increases during the time you’re in school. It also assumes you receive no grant or scholarship aid and pay the full list price.

A potentially more accurate but less conservative estimate of a degree cost can be made by using the school’s annual $8,400 in-state net price as the basis. Applying this cost over 2 would estimate the cost of a degree at $16,800**

Parental Units: Student Housing Decisions Lead Some To Buy Property

Last year, Raleigh resident Mitch Miller paid about $800 a month, sometimes a little more, in rent for his 19-year-old son to live in Wilmington and go to school at Cape Fear Community College.

As the months go on, Im looking at our bank account and thinking, We dont have any equity; its just paying rent, Miller said. And if he does another year at Cape Fear, perhaps transfers to UNCW and maybe gets a job down here or he graduates and leaves, well then, weve got four years of $800-plus a month and nothing to show for it.

Millers son, Seth, would have a degree, of course, Miller said, but still, I mean, thats a lot of money to pay for living expenses. So one day I was thinking, we should see if we could find a place to buy down here because we like coming to Wilmington.

In the months leading up to the start of school this month for CFCC and University of North Carolina Wilmington students Miller wasnt the only parent whose thoughts were turn to housing costs for the upcoming year. The Wilmington market offers a variety of choices in addition to on-campus living in the case of UNCW, including recently constructed student apartments off campus and other rental homes, condos and townhomes.

Stephanie Laniers residential real estate company, Lanier Property Group, fields calls about the sales market for potential student housing mainly in the summer but also at times during the winter break.
