- Courses passed for credit at any CUNY college will transfer for credit at any other CUNY college.
- Courses that fulfill a Required Common Core requirement at any CUNY college will transfer for Required Common Core credit at any other CUNY college.
- Courses that fulfill a Flexible Common Core requirement at any CUNY college will transfer for Flexible Common Core credit at any other CUNY college.
- Courses that fulfill a College Option requirement at any CUNY college will transfer for College Option credit at any other CUNY college.
- Courses that are designated as Gateway courses into a major will transfer for major credit at any other CUNY college that offers the major.
What Credits Can You Transfer
Transfer credits are reviewed and awarded based on a few factors.
- The grade achieved in the course.
- You must have a final grade of at least 60% for a university course or at least 70% for a college course for a course to be considered for transfer credit.
- Courses with a grade of pass, successful, credit, etc., are not considered for transfer credits.
- The course content, how rigorous the content was, and how closely it matches a course that Waterloo offers.
- How long ago you took the course.
- The relevance of the proposed transfer credits towards your Waterloo degree.
We will consider only courses that are academic in nature. Courses that are vocationally specific, e.g., Nursing Techniques, may not receive any credits.
Can You Transfer Credits From One University Or Degree To Another
Yes! Generally speaking, you can transfer credits from one university to another. At Waterloo, you can transfer up to 50 per cent of the courses toward the degree you would like to earn. Some programs limit the number of credits which can be transferred. An official assessment is completed after you accept your Waterloo Offer of Admission. You may need to submit some or all of your course syllabi, depending on what we have previously evaluated.

Hiram College Transfer Scholarship
Amount: Up to $16,000
Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio offers annual scholarship awards between $12,000 and $16,000. These awards may be renewable for up to three years. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate academic excellence. Students who are Phi Theta Kappa members might also be eligible to receive a special scholarship award. Why Do Students Transfer Credits
A student may wish to transfer their credits for many reasons. Generally speaking, people in America are much more mobile and move more often. As a result, a younger student may find themselves forced to unexpectedly re-enroll in a new higher learning institution if their parents move out of state. On the other hand, students who are in the military will naturally be re-located to different locations. Finally, certain students may simply be unsatisfied with the degree or college of their choice.
Its A Bad Idea To Leave Your Credits Behind
Naturally, the more credits you can transfer in, the fewer courses youll have to take. Of course that would translate to a savings of both time and money. Whats not so obvious, though, is that the more of your credits your transfer school accepts, the more likely you are to earn your bachelors degree in some cases, much more likely.
The difference credit transfer makes is remarkable. According to The Community College Route to the Bachelors Degree, a study by David Monaghan and Paul Attewell of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, community college students who transfer in all or most of the credits theyve earned are 2.5 times more likely to graduate than those who transfer in less than 50%.
But the study also revealed that only 58% of students transfer in with all or most of their credits. Even more disheartening, though, is that 14% of community college students lose almost all previously earned credits and are therefore starting out as freshmen again! regardless of how much time theyve already been in college.
That is why, Monaghan and Attewell explain, transfer students as a group graduate at lower rates than native students . It is not that transfer students are academically inferior. Nor do they have less access to financial aid. The cold, hard truth is that these students are at a big disadvantage because they lose so many credits when they transfer.

Information for Students Who Transferred From Another Regionally Accredited College
If you are transferring within CUNY , then the Gen Ed requirements which you have satisfied at your previous college will count at Lehman. The fulfilled requirements transfer with you.
Students must satisfy the requirement that 30 credits as well as one-half the credits in the major and half in the minor or half the credits in an interdisciplinary program be completed in residence at Lehman.
If you are entering Lehman with credits earned at a regionally accredited college or university outside CUNY, then the evaluation of your transcript will determine how many of the Gen Ed requirements you have already fulfilled. Please contact admission for transcript evaluation.
Courses passed outside the City University system with a grade of D will not be credited by Lehman College. They will be included, however, in the cumulative index to determine an applicant’s eligibility for admission.
Interview With An Admissions Counselor
Diane Kahle earned her BS in communication from Clarion University in 1992. She has been an admissions counselor since 1999. Diane has been working with the transfer student population since 2002. Diane travels around Pennsylvania to visit community colleges and has been a member of the Western Pennsylvania Transfer Advisory Council since its inception. The Advisory Council is made up of transfer counselors from the western Pennsylvania state schools and community colleges.
What we’ve seen at Clarion University is that our applications have decreased through the pandemic. In talking with my colleagues at the community colleges, they have found that their students who were ready to move on to four-year schools have pulled back a little due to the pandemic. When they normally would have applied to a number of schools, they ended up looking at only the “safe” one close to home.
One step that we took here at Clarion in response to that was to look at the students who had withdrawn their files for the 2020 academic year. We reached out to those who lived an hour away from our location with information about reactivating their original application to allow them to transfer back closer to home.
Keeping in mind that our closest community college is one hour away, we see 40% of our transfer students coming from two-year schools and 60% coming from four-year schools.

Send In All Your Transcripts
We already discussed sending in your undergraduate transcripts when applying to your new program. But sometimes your high school credits are overlooked and they may have some worth. Maybe you took an advanced placement course, for instance.
Apart from high school, you may have taken other extra curricular courses that might be of value. Again, speak to your advisor!
How To Increase The Odds That Credits Will Transfer
Its always a good idea to keep one eye on the future. If you think you may want to transfer credits at some point, do your research and look up the policies at the schools that you might consider transferring to. That way, you can choose your courses or AP classes wisely.
If you are unsure about transferring later, make a point of starting your education with core classes taught almost everywhere. If you have a transcript of calculus, biology, and English, you will likely have more luck getting those credits to transfer than you would credit for game design or an obscure etymology seminar.
If you are a high school student deciding between AP classes or dual enrollment, consider which type of college you plan on attending. Dual enrollment can be great for transferring to state schools, but AP classes are a more universally accepted option.

Transfer To A Professional Program
Transferring online credits to a professional program is quite common, but it does have its own set of guidelines. Online professional programs are created as a fast-track towards a professional or advanced degree therefore, most general education requirements must be transferable to prevent academic progress delays.
Knowing in advance the core requirements and transfer policies of a new school can allow you to plan accordingly, taking courses you know will be accepted and preventing the loss of college credits.
How To Transfer Credits For Courses Taken Abroad

If you want to attend a college or university in the U.S. or Canada, you may be able to transfer some credits for courses you have already taken. The decision to accept credits earned abroad varies from school to school, but here are some of the factors many universities consider:
- Is the institution you attended recognized by your countrys ministry of education?
- Are the courses you have taken similar to those offered by the institution you would like to attend?
- Do the courses you have taken meet the requirements for the degree and major you would like to transfer into?
Many academic institutions may allow you to transfer credits but limit how many foreign credits they accept. You should contact the admissions office of the institution you want to attend to learn their policy.
If the school does accept foreign credits, you will likely be asked to provide some or all of the following documents:
- Official academic transcripts from the institution you attended
- A formal English translation of your transcripts

CHECK THAT COURSES APPLY!As a CUNY student, use DegreeWorks and the Financial Aid Tracking System to ensure you are taking courses that apply to your degree. If you see a course you are registered for in Electives not allowed in DegreeWorks, it means that TAP wont pay for it, and you should check with your advisor whether you really need to be taking it.
UNDERSTAND YOUR FINANCIAL AID!Financial aid grants available to students are for a limited number of semesters. Choosing courses that will not transfer can result in you running out of financial aid before you finish your degree. This means planning is essential.

Moving from an online program to an on-campus environment is a normal process, but completing the transfer with the bulk of your credits can be challenging if you dont do your research. Furthermore, its important to note that whether you have online or in-person course credits only credits from an accredited institution are accepted.
Articulation and transfer agreements should be considered as these are designed for your specific situation. Additionally, many online programs are directly affiliated with accredited institutions. How Does Residency Affect Tuition
Students seeking new educational opportunities may consider out-of-state schools, but out-of-state tuition is generally far more expensive at public institutions. According to the College Board, the average annual tuition at an in-state public four-year institution was $10,440 during the 2019-20 academic school year. Conversely, the national average for out-of-state tuition at these schools was $26,820.
One way to ease the burden of out-of-state tuition is to consider online programs many of these programs charge all distance learners the same rate. Distance learning allows you to choose from schools across the country without worrying about commuting and finding housing. You may also be able to finish your degree faster, since online programs tend to offer more flexibility.
Alternatively, if you’re drawn to a program or major only offered in another state, consider establishing residency there. According to FinAid, eligibility for in-state tuition usually requires at least one year of residency without taking any classes.
If you’re a “dependent” student and receiving substantial financial support from your parents, at least one of your parents must have lived in that state for a year. To qualify as an “independent” student, you must demonstrate two years of self-sufficiency and state residency.
Foreign Students Or Students From Non
The requirements for foreign transfer students are generally the same as they are other transfer students. The evaluation of your transcript will determine how many of the CUNY 2013 Gen Ed requirements you have already fulfilled.
Courses from non-accredited institutions that do not have a Lehman equivalent will not transfer.
