The Consequences Of Attending A Non

The consequences of going to a non-accredited school will depend on the exact reason the student enrolls in a course or program. But generally speaking, if a student attends a school that’s not accredited, they will miss out on certain advantages and face the possibility of graduating with a degree, diploma or certificate that is practically worthless beyond any personal satisfaction the student may garner from the accomplishment.

  • Will be ineligible to receive most private forms of financial aid, especially scholarships.
  • May have employers disregard or simply ignore any academic credential that came from the unaccredited institution.
  • Will be attending an educational institution that cannot receive any federal or state funding to help support the school.
  • May not have the academic credits earned at the unaccredited school be accepted by another school when transferring or applying for admission.
  • May open themselves up to the potential for criminal prosecution or civil liability for the unauthorized practice of a particular profession.

What Is Regional Accreditation

College Accreditation Explained | College Terminology

Public universities and non-profit educational institutions typically opt for regional accreditation. These institutions usually have a more comprehensive and rigorous academic quality as the standards for regional certification tend to be higher than national accreditation. Regionally accredited institutions also offer more opportunities for transfer to students looking to migrate to another regionally accredited school. Students with regionally accredited degrees are also eligible for graduate school admission.Regional accreditation is not only the most prestigious accreditation form but also the most widely recognized, reviewed by a regional agency with the consensus of the Department of Education. The seven most prestigious regionally-accrediting agencies include the following:

  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission
  • Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
  • Higher Learning Commission
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
  • New England Commission of Higher Education

However, obtaining regional accreditation is not easy. According to most experts, the standards of these agencies tend to be more challenging than those of national accrediting agencies. Finding information about these particular standards is quite tricky.

Fully Or Partially Online Colleges

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission typically accredits colleges and universities offering more than half their course programs through distance learning. Such institutes are generally private educational institutions that may be for-profit or non-profit. The commission evaluates the institution with the same academic criteria as regional accreditors.

Several online colleges and universities seek national accreditation through DEAC, including for-profit institutions. However, primarily online universities or colleges may seek regional accreditation rather than national. In such cases, the schools are formerly campus-based institutions that opted for an online model but did not let go of their association with regional accreditation. In contrast, some colleges and universities that started as virtual teaching institutions may transition from national to regional certification. One such example is Thomas Edison University.

How Is The Department Of Education Involved

The U.S. Department of Education became involved in education accreditation when returning soldiers from the Korean War wanted to go to college on the GI Bill. With so many individuals wanting a college degree, unscrupulous degree mills sprang up to take advantage of unsuspecting prospective students. To ensure taxpayer dollars weren’t spent on worthless degrees, Congress created a law that required any post-secondary institution accepting students that received federal financial aid to meet and maintain certain minimum academic quality standards.

While the DOE doesn’t accredit schools and has no direct control over accreditation, it recognizes organizations that accredit schools. If an accrediting agency isn’t recognized by the DOE , its accreditation granting powers aren’t given much weight or respect in the academic or professional communities.

Q Sometimes Schools Will Lose Accreditation Only To Regain It Soon After Should A Student Be Wary Of A School That Has Lapsed In Accreditation

Regional accreditation does not just lapse. Before a university actually loses accreditation from a regional accreditor, the university is given multiple opportunities to improve unless the issues are truly egregious. If the regional accreditor removes accreditation status, then there are truly egregious issues or the university repeatedly failed at its efforts to improve. This is a red flag.

Losing programmatic accreditation is different and may or may not be a red flag. In several instances, a university may simply choose not to renew programmatic accreditation simply because of the cost of maintaining these specialized, programmatic accreditations. Other accreditations simply lose their relevance to prospective students or employers.

    • Some international locations, including British Columbia and Canada

    How Are Colleges Accredited

Educational institutions are either regionally or nationally accredited. Accreditation is a voluntary process that ensures a college, university, or degree program meets a universal standard for quality. This gives an institution and its graduates credibility with other institutions and employers. Institutional accreditation is different from programmatic accreditation which is covered below.

Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. Department of Education does not accredit educational institutions and/or programs. However, the USDOE and the non-profit Council for Higher Education Accreditation oversee the accreditation process. They review the federally-recognized agencies that set accreditation standards.

Whether or not an institution offers degree programs online, on campus, or both, is irrelevant when it comes to accreditation. They answer to the same governing organizations that ensure students receive a quality education.
