Why Is The Meningitis B Vaccine Not Recommended As Strongly As The Ac W Y Vaccine

In short: cost. Dr. Tan says theres a problem with formally recommending a meningitis B vaccination for every young person in the US. Were not infinitely rich. The resources to vaccinate every adolescent in our countryits immense. Its just not practical, he explains.

That said, the current recommendation;isnt working;either.

Weve got to figure out a way to manage this. Were depriving people of a very good vaccine who might want to get protected, Dr. Tan says. He places the blame on doctors who dont bring up the disease;or the vaccine when they meet with their patients. Thats an implementation problem. If you fail to talk about B vaccine, youre failing your patients. need to have an internal policy where everybody agrees youre going to talk about the vaccine, Dr. Tan says.

Students Under 22 Years Of Age Who Will Take Any Face

Documentation must be submitted at least 10 days prior to the student’s first in-person class.

What Are The Top Vaccines That College Students Need

“Each patient will have a different situation, and their medical records can bring them up to date. Overall, the ones I’d emphasize are meningitis and hepatitis B.”

“Almost every college requires or strongly recommends students be vaccinated for meningitis, especially if they plan to live in the dorms. Close quarters make it easier for bacteria to spread.”

“Hepatitis B is a blood-borne infection, but can also be transmitted through sexual activity. The disease can have long-term liver consequences. The hepatitis B vaccine is a three-dose series, and might be among the safest vaccines ever made.”

“I would also recommend the combined tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccine.”

Changes in behavior such as confusion, sleepiness, and unresponsiveness are important symptoms of illness. Anyone who has these symptoms should be seen by a healthcare provider immediately. Do College Students Need Mmr

In the U.S., almost everyone receives the CDC-recommended two doses of MMR, the vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella, as young children. The MMR affords good protection against these diseases, and routine vaccination with a third dose of MMR isnt necessary for all students.

Still, there are some circumstances in which youll want your student to get a dose of MMR before he or she arrives on campus. If for some reason your child didnt receive MMR vaccination at a young age, they should have two doses, separated by 28 days.;

Heres why: Although most recent measles outbreaks havent been on college campuses, they are considered high-risk settings. Mumps is sometimes a concern for college students as well. Between 2015 and 2017, two large outbreaks at universities in Iowa and Illinois caused several hundred students to get sick.;

The CDC usually recommends that people in communities with an active mumps outbreak receive an additional dose of MMR. A 2017 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a mumps booster in an outbreak significantly reduced the risk of infection. For measles outbreaks, the CDC recommends people who arent adequately vaccinated catch up, but people generally dont need an extra dose of MMR if they’re already immune to measles.

Most Health Insurance Plans Cover The Cost For Menb Vaccination

Most health plans must cover CDC-recommended vaccines with no out-of-pocket costs if an in-network healthcare provider administers the vaccine. Patients should check with their insurance provider for details on whether there is any cost to them for this vaccine.

The Vaccines for Children, or VFC, program provides vaccines for children 18 and younger who are

  • Not insured
  • Medicaid-eligible
  • American Indian or Alaska Native

Parents can find a VFC provider by contacting their local health department. VFC will cover the cost of MenB vaccination for those

  • 16 through 18 years of age
  • 10 through 18 years of age identified as being at increased risk;due to a medical condition

What Parents And Teens Need To Know About The Meningitis B Vaccine

This post is sponsored by GSK;but the opinions are my own.;

When my oldest son was in college there was an outbreak of meningitis B on his campus. Initially, I was worried but felt assured that he had been vaccinated as I closely followed his pediatricians recommendations and thought;he would be fine. However, soon it became clear that he had been vaccinated for a different type of meningitis , and the one that was sickening a few of his classmates was Meningitis B, for which, at that time, there was no vaccination available in the United States. Meningitis B vaccination is available now.1

While the overall risk of contracting meningococcal disease is low,;teens and young adults are at an increased risk for contracting meningitis because it can spread through certain common behaviors such as living in close quarters like college dormitories, coughing, sneezing, kissing, and sharing drinks, utensils, or smoking devices.2

While meningococcal meningitis is uncommon, It can progress quickly, and can be fatal.2;There is also a risk of long-term consequences such as loss of limbs, brain damage, deafness and nervous system problems.3

After this outbreak, Meningitis B vaccination became available in the US.;However,;even though MenB vaccination has been available since 2014, recent CDC data show that only about 1 in 5 17-year-olds in the US received at least one dose of MenB vaccination in 2019.4

What Are Neisseria Meningitidis

Neisseria meningitidis are bacteria that may be found normally in peoples throats and noses. About 5 to 15% of people carry these bacteria and do not get sick from them. These people may be referred to as colonized. Colonized people only have bacteria for a short time. Usually, the bacteria go away and these people may have increased resistance to infection in the future. In rare cases, the bacteria may get into the blood and go to the tissue surrounding the spinal cord and brain, causing severe illness. It is not known why this occurs in certain people and not in others. A recent upper respiratory illness may be a contributing factor.;

It Does Not Matter Which Menb Vaccine You Use

Things You Need to Know about Meningitis Vaccine Shots ...

CDC has no preference as to which MenB vaccine you use. Adolescents must receive the same vaccine product for all doses. If a patient receives different products for any of the doses, proceed with the next scheduled dose of the selected product with a minimum of 1 month since the last dose of either product.

Tuberculosis Screening Requirement For High

The University requires all incoming International and Intensive English Language Institute students who were previously diagnosed or treated for TB or are considered to be at high risk for tubercular disease, as defined by the World Health Organization or United States of America Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to be screened for tuberculosis . High-risk students must be screened and/or tested for TB within a 3-week window after the 12th class day of their first term of study on the UNT campus.;

TB is an infectious disease that usually occurs in the lungs. It is found in many countries around the world. TB can be either active, with obvious symptoms, or latent, with no obvious symptoms. Latent TB cannot be passed to other people, but it can turn into active TB. Thus, both active and latent TB must be treated, and both can be treated effectively when found early. Persons are only infectious when they have active TB.;

Students may either be tested at the SHWC or provide documentation to Student Health and Wellness Center verifying that they were tested for TB on a previous date and report the results of his or her TB test using the Tuberculosis Screening Record for Outside Providers form. The documentation must be validated with the signature and stamp/seal of a physician or authorized official and provide clear documentation of the date given and date read.

What Are The Options For Meningococcal Vaccine

Meningococcal vaccine is highly effective at protecting against four strains of the meningococcal bacteria. Three strains are common in the United States and the fourth strain protects travelers to certain countries where the disease is more common.

The MenACWY vaccine does not contain the meningococcal B strain that may cause some cases in adolescents/young adults. The meningococcal B vaccine can be given to people age 16-23 years. MenB vaccine is also recommended for people over age 10 years with certain high-risk conditions. If your clinic does not carry the MenB vaccine, you can ask them to order it for you, or to refer you to another clinic that has the vaccine. Talk to your health care provider about this additional vaccine.

College Students Now Required To Get Bacterial Meningitis Vaccine

They kiss, they share water bottles, they live in tightly packed dormitories, and so they are at a higher risk of getting meningitis, a potentially fatal disease, than many other sectors of the population.

Thats why New Jersey has just become the 38th state to require college students to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis as a condition for attending an institution.

Gov. Phil Murphy signed bill A-1991 on Jan. 14, endorsing a law that advocates hope will prevent outbreaks of the rare but potentially deadly disease on college campuses.

Meningitis is an extraordinarily dangerous disease thats spread through casual contact, said Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz , one of the bill sponsors. It can kill you, and it can also maim you for life.

She said a typical college dorm lifestyle that involves sharing water glasses, silverware and bathrooms is more likely to spread meningitis than other settings such as crowded commuter trains or offices. Even if you work in a close space, you dont tend to kiss your co-workers, she said.

Although high school students may experience similar living conditions, they are already covered by a program that vaccinates them at about 12 and then again at 16. The new law aims to prevent the disease in the older age group.
