Types Of Academic Honors

5 Things you DONT Need to Get into Speech Pathology Graduate School

There are many types of academic honors, and the ones available to you may depend on the honors your university recognizes. Individual schools or colleges within the university may have other distinctions. For example, the college of engineering may award specific academic honors to engineering majors who have met certain criteria, and this criterion may vary from what another college at the university requires. In general, these are the types of academic honors you may find at the university level:

  • Honor student

Below, we explain each of these academic distinctions in more detail.

Application Of Military Science Credits Toward The Degree

Earned credits in Military Science courses are applied toward partial fulfillment of degree requirements subject to the following:

  • Military Science courses approved for general education are excluded from these limitations.
  • Colleges may determine the applicability of MILS courses to satisfy college-specific requirements of majors, minors, concentrations, selectives, or electives.
  • Colleges may allow a maximum of three semester hours of credit for Military Science courses at the 100 level. Colleges may allow an additional one hour of credit in basic military science for a minimum of six months of extended active duty in the in any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
  • These rules apply to courses in naval science courses offered to UIC undergraduates and appearing on a UIC transcript but taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology .

What Are The Requirements To Graduate Summa Magna And Cum Laude

There is not currently a nationwide standard for earning any of the Latin honors, so universities are free to form their own requirements. In all instances, universities often reserve these distinctions for students who reach a certain GPA or rank in a certain percentage of their class compared to their peers. Some universities also hold additional requirements to earn one of the honors, including needing a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, completing special projects or finishing a certain number of advanced courses.

Requirements to graduate summa cum laude: Top 5% of students or those with a cumulative GPA of 4.0+.

Requirements to graduate magna cum laude: Top 10% of students or those with GPAs from 3.8 to 3.9.

Requirements to graduate cum laude: Top 20% of students or those with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.7.

Since every university and the specific colleges or programs of study can decide what they consider summa, magna and cum laude, check with your academic advisor so you’re aware of honors eligibility and what you need to accomplish to earn such distinction. As an example, the college of medicine may decide that students with a GPA of 3.85 or above qualify for summa cum laude given the intensity of undergraduate courses in this field of study. The college of communications may decide that summa cum laude is reserved for students with a 3.95 GPA or higher.

Why Turn To Standardized Exams

Admissions committees also understand that applicants’ grade point averages often can’t be meaningfully compared. Grades can differ among universities: an A at one university may be a B+ at another. Also, grades differ among professors in the same university. Because grade point averages are not standardized, it’s hard to compare applicants’ GPAs. Therefore admissions committees turn to standardized exams, like the GRE, MCAT, LSAT, and GMAT, to make comparisons among applicants from different universities. Therefore if you have a low GPA, it is essential that you try your best on these tests.

A B is assigned to students who have a grade point average of 3.3. It is somewhere between a B and a B+ in terms of quality. Not only do Bs earn degrees, but they can also assist you in gaining admission to graduate school. Bs are rated above average on most academic measures, including the SAT and ACT.

If You Have Semester Hours And Quarter Hours

If some of your credits are semester hours and some are quarter hours, you must convert all relevant grades to either semester hours or to quarter hours. We recommend that you pick the transcript with the least amount of hours and convert it to the other. For example, if your transcript with the least amount of hours is in quarter hours, convert this transcript to semester hours.

  • To convert semester hours to quarter hours, multiply each semester hour by 1.5.
  • To convert quarter hours to semester hours, multiply each quarter hour by 0.67.
  • If numerical grades or equivalents are provided on your transcript, convert them by multiplying by the same factors.

Repeat Policy For Standard Graded Courses

Students may repeat a course to increase their knowledge of the subject matter. There are circumstances under which repeating a course is advisable and to a students advantage. There are also circumstances where repeating a course may disadvantage a student and narrow a students options. Some colleges require students to discuss any plan to repeat a course with their academic advisor before they register to repeat the course.

Courses with A or B grades may not be repeated. Normally, courses with a C grade may not be repeated. Courses with D or F grades may be repeated once without written permission. In all cases, the original grade for the course and the grade for each repeat will appear on the transcript. Only one registration for the course counts toward the total number of credits required for graduation. A course cannot be repeated after receiving credit in a course for which the repeat course is a prerequisite.

To repeat a course more than once requires written permission from the students college dean. Students who have been dismissed may not appeal on the grounds of intention to repeat courses. Certain courses may not be repeated students should consult their college before repeating a course.

What Is A Dean’s List

Most universities award students with a Dean’s List designation each semester upon review of their academic standing. At the end of their college career, students attend their graduation or an honors convocation where the university awards them with the Dean’s List honor for outstanding academic achievement throughout their time at the university. Your school may go a step further and award Dean’s List with Distinction honors to students who have a perfect or near-perfect grade-point average .

Some individual colleges will also award students with their own Dean’s List distinction. This is usually done by the college or school at the university where a student completed most of their coursework or is earning their degree in. For example, an education major may receive the Dean’s List honor from their university’s college of education. Individual colleges may also award Dean’s List certificates each semester the student earns it.

Graduation With University Honors

To be eligible for undergraduate honors at graduation, a minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 for cum laude, 3.7 for magna cum laude and 3.9 for summa cum laude is required. Students must meet these averages, both on residence work attempted and on combined transferred and residence work attempted. The honors award is then determined by either the GPA for the residence work or the GPA for the combined transferred and residence work, whichever is lower. USC does not honor other colleges academic renewal or forgiveness programs that permit students to improve a substandard grade. If you repeat a transferable course for which you earned a grade of D+ or lower, both grades will be included in your transfer GPA. If the grade on the first course was a C- or higher, only the first grade is included.

The university will not deviate from policies governing the calculation of the grade point averages required for graduation with honors through inclusion or exclusion of course work. University honors are noted on academic transcripts and the diploma.

Role Of Gpa: Before During And After Grad School

Some students automatically presume that the higher the grade point average the better. However, this is not always the case because the role and importance of your GPA changes throughout your academic career. In other words, your GPA can signify different things to different people at different times depending on your current academic progress, your area of study, and your goals after grad school.

What Is Gpa And How Is It Calculated

Graduation Requirements

Yale was the first U.S. school to apply grading methods that resemble the system currently in place. The university tracked student progress in a “book of averages” that set procedures for exams and mentions a 4-point scale. Today, the GPA system is widely used by middle schools, high schools, and colleges throughout the U.S.

Most schools calculate GPA on a 0.0-4.0 scale. Each of your letter grades receives a numeric equivalent. The average of those equivalencies becomes your cumulative GPA.

The following chart shows how letter and percentage grades correspond to a 4.0 GPA scale.

When A College Gpa Isn’t An Issue

That said, if grad school isn’t in your future and the corporate world isn’t on your agenda, there’s a good chance your GPA may never again come up after you grab your diploma. In general, employers focus more on your level of education, not the grades that got you there, and there’s no rule that says you need to put your GPA on your resumé.

Bottom line: Your college GPA is only as important as it is for your future plans. While you may not feel pressure to focus on maintaining as high a GPA as you did in high school, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t work hard in your college classes and succeed as best you can academically. After all, you never know what jobs or graduate school programs you might end up applying for years after you graduate.

What’s The Average College Gpa

The average GPA for students at four-year colleges in the US is around 3.15, or a B average. This is much higher than it’s been in the past, a trend that demonstrates that grade inflation is a very real phenomenon for colleges. For example, a C used to be the standard average grade, but now a B is considered average. Why is this?

One factor might be that professors are more vulnerable to student critiques in online forums and are sometimes forced to answer to angry parents if they give poor grades. The job of a professor can partially depend on how pleased his or her students are with the class, which is inevitably tied to what grades students get.

As college becomes more and more expensive, both students and parents expect high grades so they can feel as though they’re getting their money’s worth. This is also a likely reason for grade inflation, especially considering the disparity in average GPA between public and private colleges: according to GradeInflation.com, public schools have around a 3.1 average GPA, whereas private schools have around a 3.3 average GPA.

Grade inflation might also be happening because professors don’t want to jeopardize students’ future chances at grad school or job opportunities by doling out low grades in an academic environment that has now come to expect Bs as the norm.

However, telling you the overall average GPA across colleges and majors is somewhat meaningless as a statistic since GPAs vary so drastically by school and by major.

What Is Gpa And How Does It Work

GPA, which stands to Grade Point Average, basically represents the average grade that you get in all your classes. Here are some examples of GPAs:

  • You can achieve a GPA of 4.0 if you score all As.
  • If you get all Bs, your GPA is 3.0
  • If you have a mix of As and Bs, your GPA is approximately 3.5
  • If you score all Ds, your GPA is 1.0

The first thing to remember when calculating your GPA is that all grades are linked with a number. An A is four, a B is three, a C is two, a D is one, and an F zero.

It is essential to keep track your high school grades to determine if youre on the right path to passing. Your Grade Point Average can be calculated by adding up all the points you earn for each subject and then subtracting the total from the number of subjects. This will give your grade point average.

Is A 388 Gpa Good In College

To explain further, the national average GPA is about 3.0, therefore a GPA of 3.8 places you somewhat over the national average. Please remember that the 3.0 national average is representative of all students, not just those who are applying to college. As a result, the average GPA of students admitted to institutions is higher than the national average of 3.0.
