When Does College Application Start

The Benefits Of Applying Early

How/When to start the college application process

For a student who has a definite first-choice college, applying early has many benefits besides possibly increasing the chance of getting in. Applying early lets the student:

  • Reduce stress by cutting the time spent waiting for a decision.
  • Save the time and expense of submitting multiple applications.
  • Gain more time, once accepted, to look for housing and otherwise prepare for college.
  • Reassess options and apply elsewhere if not accepted.

When Is The Absolute Last Month I Can Take My Mcat And Still Be Competitive For The Current/upcoming Admissions Cycle

As mentioned above, we recommend that you take your final MCAT no later than in April. That way, you can devote some of April, all of May, and all of June to essay writing. Of course, if you complete your MCAT earlier, you can begin writing earlier.

Nevertheless, you wont be late if you take the MCAT in May because youll receive your score in June. However, taking the MCAT in May will translate to less time for pre-writing essays, meaning youll have to work under more pressure to ensure that applications get in at the right times. One way to mitigate this time pressure is to begin writing your essays earlier in the year and devoting March, April, and some of May to MCAT studying. Then, once you complete the MCAT, you can return to writing.

If you take the MCAT in June, you can still be competitive for medical school during that years admissions cycle. However, the time pressure to submit your applications in a timely manner will increase dramatically.

The Ethics Of Applying Early Decision

The Common Application and some colleges’ application forms require the student applying under early decision, as well as the parent and counselor, to sign an ED agreement form spelling out the plan’s conditions.

Make it clear in your school handbook and at college planning events that your policy for early-decision applications is to send the student’s final transcript to one college only: anything else is unethical.

Rolling Admission And Transfer Application Deadlines

Rather than maintaining set deadlines, colleges with rolling admission evaluate applications as they come in and usually offer several application windows each year. In general, these schools accept and review applications until all spots in the upcoming class are filled.

While schools’ application windows can vary widely, most institutions open up admissions early in the fall around September 1. This window can last all the way through spring, depending on how many spots remain, though some schools may follow the May 1 college deadline.

A rolling admission policy is one that many schools use to evaluate transfer applicants as well. Transfer students should begin the application process well ahead of their prospective school’s posted application deadline. Each school maintains its own application window and transfer credit policies, so make sure you carefully read over the requirements before applying.

Although there’s a chance your high school transcript may come into consideration, it’s more likely that your transfer school’s admissions board will evaluate your college transcript. All transfer students should request letters of recommendation, obtain official college transcripts, and submit their applications by March or April for admission that fall.

When Do Most College Applications Open

One challenge of college applications is the variability from school to school. Each college chooses how students should apply, when its application opens, and, of course, its final application deadline . This means that every college you apply to probably will likely have different dates and deadlines that you need to track. However, this wont significantly affect your big-picture timeline, since most colleges open up their applications around the same time.

There are other factors that add some uniformity to the college admissions timeline. Many colleges use the Common Application for all Common App schools, the application opens on the day that the Common App opens, August 1st. This Common App opening date has remained the same for some years.

Another frequently used application platform is ApplyTexas, which is used by most public universities in Texas. The ApplyTexas application opens a little bit sooner, around July 1st, and you can submit your application as early as 10:00 AM Central Time that day!

Theres also the University of California Application, which is the only application platform used by all public universities in the University of California networkthese schools include UC Berkeley and UCLA. This application is unique because, though it is released in August, applicants are only allowed to submit their applications from November 1st to November 30th.

    Regular Decision College Application Deadlines

Regular decision means youre applying by your colleges application deadline for fall enrollment. This is the most common kind of application, where colleges set a specific deadline, typically between January and February.

Colleges review applications after the usual closing date and most announce decisions by April 1. If accepted, youll have until May 1 to respond to the offer.

Who should apply: Applying during regular admissions works best if youre applying to several schools and are not sure which one you want to attend, or if you need another semester to get your grades up. Regular decision also offers you more time to work on your application, compared to more stringent early admission options.

Common Questions About Applying To College

Students can start preparing their application materials as early as they want, but the process begins in the fall of senior year. Most deadlines fall between January and February, so learners should give themselves enough time to complete their applications.

The Common App can make applying for college easier, but the general application process can be costly and lengthy. Learners may want to start with a list of 4-6 colleges that they want to attend and then go from there.

Applying for college early offers several advantages for students. Early applicants may find the admission requirements easier to meet. They can also receive responses sooner, allowing them to apply to more schools, if needed.

For most college applications, candidates need to provide high school transcripts, recommendation letters, and ACT or SAT scores. They may also need to write personal statements or answer essay questions.

Students often use the same materials for different applications, as applicants can send transcripts and test scores to all prospective schools with little effort. However, some colleges have unique requirements that candidates must address individually, and it’s important to always double-check any personal essay prompts to ensure that your essay answers the brief.

If you are an early action applicant, youll typically have until November 1 or 15 to apply to colleges. Consequently, youll also receive your decisions earlier usually by January or February, which means youll have more time than regular applicants to formally reply to offers before the May 1 decision day.

Who should apply: While there is little downside to early action, make sure youre fully prepared with a killer application to impress admissions committees. Early action also gets any admissions stress out of the way early. If you want to focus on your senior year knowing your college applications are out of the way, early action is a great choice.

    The Drawbacks Of Applying Early

Pressure to decide: Committing to one college puts pressure on students to make serious decisions before they’ve explored all their options.

Reduced financial aid opportunities: Students who apply under ED plans receive offers of admission and financial aid simultaneously and so will not be able to compare financial aid offers from other colleges. For students who absolutely need financial aid, applying early may be a risky option.

Time crunch for other applications: Most colleges do not notify ED and EA applicants of admission until December 15. Because of the usual deadlines for applications, this means that if a student is rejected by the ED college, there are only two weeks left to send in other applications. Encourage those of your students who are applying early to prepare other applications as they wait to receive admission decisions from their first-choice college.

Senioritis: Applicants who learn early that they have been accepted into a college may feel that, their goal accomplished, they have no reason to work hard for the rest of the year. Early-applying students should know that colleges may rescind offers of admission should their senior-year grades drop.

Students and parents can use our Pros and Cons of Applying to College Early, in the Deciding About Early Decision and Early Action handout, to weigh their options.
