As the third-largest university system in the United States, the California State University system comprises 11 different colleges in southern California.

Unlike the UC system that focuses on admitting the top 12.5% of high school students, the CSU system admits the top one-third of high school applicants.

California State University system universities are primarily intended for undergraduate education, but several universities within the CSU system offer graduate programs and many are becoming more involved in research.

Over the last decade, CSU schools including Long Beach State, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Cal State Fullerton, San Francisco State, San Jose State, and San Diego State have become much more research-oriented, especially in the area of applied sciences. Most community colleges in the United States do not offer on-campus housing for students. These institutions were established primarily to provide low-cost education for students who commute from their homes. However, there is an increasing trend toward offering dormitories on these campuses, particularly because increased costs are causing more students who would typically enroll in a traditional four-year college to attend a two-year school instead. Also, community colleges are increasingly recruiting student athletes and students from outside the U.S., who are more likely to need or want on-campus housing.

By the last count, the community college system employed one counselor for every 563 students on average in 2017. At some colleges, the figure was closer to 1,500 students per counselor.

The State Normal Schools

Today’s California State University system is the direct descendant of the Minns Evening Normal School, a normal school in San Francisco that educated the city’s future teachers in association with the high school system. The school was taken over by the state in 1862 and moved to San Jose and renamed the California State Normal School it eventually evolved into San Jose State University. A southern branch of the California State Normal School was created in Los Angeles in 1882.

In 1887, the California State Legislature dropped the word “California” from the name of the San Jose and Los Angeles schools, renaming them “State Normal Schools.” Later Chico , San Diego , and other schools became part of the State Normal School system. However, these did not form a system in the modern sense, in that each normal school had its own board of trustees and all were governed independently from one another. In 1919, the State Normal School at Los Angeles became the Southern Branch of the University of California in 1927, it became the University of California at Los Angeles .

How The Analysis Was Done

The analysis of California Community Colleges enrollment was based on data downloaded from the systemwide Chancellors Offices Data Mart on March 19, 2021. The two primary sources of data, for fall 2019 and fall 2020, were Annual/Term Student Count, which is the total head count of full-time and part-time students, and Enrollment Status Summary, which breaks students by classification, such as first-year and continuing students. EdSource calculated the percentage change systemwide, by district, and by college using these data files. Change over time was calculated using the total number of students head count enrolled in the fall for each year from 2011 through 2020. Fall term student head counts were used for all 10 years.

Hubbard said she has encouraged other leaders at the college to prioritize resuming in-person instruction for classes that were most difficult to transition to distance learning. That includes many math and science courses. We may want to look at ways to bring those classes back sooner, Hubbard said.

Between July and December of last year, staff at MiraCosta College contacted about 3,000 students who were enrolled in spring 2020 and didnt return for the fall. They surveyed those students and discovered that some lacked stable housing and reliable internet, while others needed to care for family members, said Sinclaire Tirona, a staff member who helped lead the retention campaign.

We hope that the governor is correct and things will continue to roll out in a very positive manner, but we still have to be prepared and be cautious should we have another surge, or should we have any problems with the vaccine rollout between now and fall, Eloy Ortiz Oakley, the chancellor that oversees the community colleges, told EdSource Thursday.

Oakley noted that over the past year, California has attempted to reopen the economy at different times only to have to pull back following spikes in cases of Covid-19. Until we really see the opportunity to fully open up, we want to make sure that were careful. Its a highly decentralized system that leaves specific plans for each college in the hands of local college administrators and its trustees.

The missing students include those dropping out of college and fewer first-year students enrolling after graduating from high school. The downturn has been steepest among male students, older students, who are often parents, and Black, Latino and Native American students.

The California State Colleges

During the 1950s, the state colleges’ peculiar mix of fiscal centralization and operational decentralization began to look rather incongruous in comparison to the highly centralized University of California and the highly decentralized local school districts around the state which operated Kâ12 schools and junior collegesâall of which enjoyed much more autonomy from the rest of the state government than the state colleges.

The state legislature was limited to merely suggesting locations to the UC Board of Regents for the planned UC campus on the Central Coast. In contrast, because the state colleges lacked autonomy, they became vulnerable to pork barrel politics in the state legislature. In 1959 alone, state legislators introduced separate bills to individually create nineteen state colleges. Two years earlier, one bill that had actually passed had resulted in the creation of a new state college in Turlock, a town better known for its turkeys than its aspirations towards higher education, and which made no sense except that the chair of the Senate Committee on Education happened to be from Turlock.

Preparing Students For Success In Californias Community Colleges

In its current form, developmental education may be one of the largest impediments to success in Californias community colleges. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students are deemed underprepared for college and placed into developmental courses. Yet most never earn a degree or certificate, or transfer to a four-year college. Helping these students succeed is key to closing the labor shortfall of 1.1 million degree holders projected in California by 2030.

This report presents a statistical portrait of developmental education, describing the enrollment patterns and characteristics of developmental education students, their journey through developmental coursework, and their academic outcomes. We find that:

While recent reforms are promising, more rigorous research is needed to assess whether they improve student outcomes over the long term and narrow achievement gaps. Enhancing the efficacy of developmental education-and shortening how long it takes to complete-will eliminate key barriers preventing many community college students from achieving their academic goals. Identifying successful practices in developmental coursework and bringing them to scale will be essential to increase educational opportunity and equity in the state.

The California State University And Colleges

In 1972, the system became The California State University and Colleges, and the board was renamed the “Trustees of the California State University and Colleges”. The board also became known in the alternative as the “Board of Trustees,” similar to how the Regents of the University of California are also known in the alternative as the Board of Regents.

On May 23, 1972, fourteen of the nineteen CSU campuses were renamed to “California State University,” followed by a comma and then their geographic designation. The five campuses exempted from renaming were the five newest state colleges created during the 1960s. The new names were very unpopular at certain campuses, and in 1974, all CSU campuses were given the option to revert to an older name: e.g., San Jose State, San Diego State, San Francisco State, etc.
