How Many Years Of College To Be An Architect

Don't Miss

Electives To Take In High School

Doug Patt & How to Architect’s 2019 Mentor Program

In addition to required courses, the optional classes you choose will be extremely helpful in preparing for a career in architecture. Computer hardware is less important than knowing about how software works and what you can do with it. Consider the simple value of keyboarding, as well, because time is money in the business world. Speaking of business, think about an introductory course in accounting, economics, and marketing especially important when working in your own small business.

Less obvious choices are activities that promote cooperation and consensus. Architecture is a collaborative process, so learn how to work with many different kinds of people groups that have common objectives to attain the same goal or make one product. Theater, band, orchestra, chorus, and team sports are all useful pursuits…and fun!

Am I Too Old To Be An Architect

The short answer is no. Hard stop. Now let me explain

It wont be easy.

Depending on what career youre moving from, this can be an easy or a hard switch. However no matter what career youre coming from, youll more than likely have to go back to school. If you have an undergraduate degree, you could do a three-year Masters of Architecture program , but make no mistake this wont be a cakewalk. If youre at least a decade removed from school, you may have forgotten about all the study methods and any material that you dont currently use daily, and youve definitely blocked out of your mind the late-night cram sessions. I have news for you

Take undergraduate architecture school and times it by at least 10. This is a grueling curriculum but only because the hope is to get down to the essence of the designer in you and build you up from that base with a sturdy foundation to last your career.

You are the land. School is trying to dig at you and blast away at you, putting you under immense pressure to get to the precious minerals of your talents and skills that you have to offer the world. And when you, with their help, find that mineral youre going to have to work harder than you ever have before to build upon those ideas and skills, to constantly improve them. Over the process of your new career , that mineral may start to shine from the efforts of your labor. Being smelted over the fire has its benefits, but you have to be able to stand the heat to get there.

What Qualifications Do I Need To Be An Architect

If you’re looking to study A Levels, then a good subject combination for future architects is Art, Mathematics and Physics. Different universities have different requirements, and many don’t specify any preferred subjects. However, you will need to achieve a minimum of A grades across the subjects you choose to study.

Foundation students will usually need to achieve between 60-80% on their programme. Sometimes you will also need to have a Maths qualification alongside your programme, so Bellerbys offers an additional Maths module for Art and Design students.

Most universities require a high level of English, so you will need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.

Architecture blends design with engineering to create homes, high-rise buildings, and public spaces. This career requires creativity, technical skills, and an eye for aesthetics.

From modern homes to skyscrapers, architects design the spaces people inhabit. Architecture careers require a college degree like a bachelor of architecture. Students earning architecture degrees study building materials, architectural theory, and building design.

Architecture careers go far beyond basic architecture. Related majors, like urban and regional design or civil engineering, also prepare graduates for careers as surveyors, drafters, urban planners, and civil engineers.

Many professionals contribute to building projects, from drafters and surveyors to landscape architects and building inspectors. This page introduces several architecture careers and lists the educational requirements and job duties for each.

Other Careers With An Architecture Degree

Although most graduates of architecture will go on to become licensed architects and practice professionally in the field, there are many other alternative career paths to consider particularly roles which require creative and visual skills, technical ability and knowledge of buildings. These career options include roles in spatial design, graphic design, set design for stage and film, building surveying, housing policy and planning, construction, and conservation and environmental work.

Management-level careers within these fields are also often within grasp for those who have undertaken postgraduate study and/or gained professional experience. Journalism is another route which might appeal; specialist journals and publications relating to architecture or the construction industry will often seek out architecture graduates.

Getting Into A Professional Architecture Program

If you are applying to undergraduate professional architecture programs you will go through a process that is the same as what you would go through before you can be admitted to any;other undergraduate degree program. You will have to submit SAT or ACT scores, high school transcripts, and teacher recommendations. The only difference is that you might have to also submit a portfolio with your application. Not all schools require it, but many do.

When applying to master’s degree programs, in addition to following the requirements of the college of architecture you want to attend, you will typically have to follow the general graduate school admissions requirements for the university. This includes submitting an undergraduate transcript, GRE scores, and letters of reference which can be from professors or employers. Many schools will also ask for an essay that explains why you want to enroll. Some schools call this a statement of purpose or a letter of aspiration. It is very likely that the school will ask you to submit a portfolio as well.

If you have a pre-professional undergraduate degree, for example, a B.S. or B.A. in architecture, you will probably be asked to include material that represents your college coursework. If your degree is in a discipline other than architecture, your portfolio will have to demonstrate your interest in architecture or an aptitude for design.

The harsh reality of becoming an architect is that you spend many years in college being your own Starchitect in your imaginary academic bubble. Students design all types of buildings, make all types of executive decisions, and never really face the harsh realities of business, codes, constructability, and the public.

After college, Graduates just carry out the executive decisions of others;and work on the production side of the firm, rather than the decision-making side. Most architecture graduates spend their entire careers simply implementing the design decisions of others.

The positive side to this is that a lot of great learning takes place executing others designs. By hacking your way through each annoying detail, and being in the trenches, you are becoming better prepared for being the one to make executive decisions in your future.

    Why Does Architecture Matter

    Theres no place like home

The design or re-design of a home is one of the most fascinating and important things an Architect can do. Homes house the daily activities of families and individuals. Sometimes they offer privacy and shelter. On festive occasions, they are places of open hospitality. Rural or urban, row house or apartment, the home may be used year-round or only for vacations. Beyond our homes, the community takes shape.

    Keeping the past alive

Old buildings add variety to city streets and remind us of our links to the past. Public interest in restoring old buildings is as strong as the economic pressure to re-use them. The result ? Architects are using modern techniques and ideas to renew historic buildings across Canada.

    Inside the home and office

Respected Architects have designed chairs, tables, cabinets and fabrics–objects that lend comfort and pleasure to peoples homes and work spaces. When the desire to create something organic or whole, is strong, Architects design not only a building and the space around a building, they will also shape the space inside the building.

    Mirrors of time

Great civilizations leave behind great architecture. Think of the pyramids of Egypt, the columns of Greece and Rome, the great Gothic cathedrals. Architecture reflects the religious, political and social values of the day. Todays buildings express our societys common purposes and will tell our story long after we are gone.

    Types Of Architecture Careers

Within the field of architecture, professionals pursue a variety of career paths. Why Must Architects Be Licensed

Architects are professionals. The public must be sure that people who call themselves Architects are qualified to practice in their field. So, all across Canada, Architects are licensed by provincial or territorial associations of architects. The goals of the associations are:

    • to encourage members to improve their skills and knowledge, and
    • to maintain high standards in the practice of architecture.

Like other professionals, such as doctors and lawyers, Architects are legally responsible for the decisions they make. In some provinces, all licensed Architects must have professional liability insurance if they wish to practice architecture. This insurance protects both the public and the Architect. As well, each province and territory has an Architects Act which regulates the practice of architecture. It is against the law for anyone who is not licensed to use the title Architect.
