What To Do In College

Don't Miss

Question : Tell Me About Yourself

WHAT TO DO AFTER COLLEGE

This isn’t even actually a question, but it’s something you might be asked to do in an interview. Because it’s so general, you might have trouble figuring out where to begin.

Why they’re asking this: Colleges are asking you to do this because they really do want to know more about you. That’s one of the primary purposes of the interview, after all!

What they’re looking for: You need to paint a unique portrait of who you are to separate yourself from other applicants. Avoid clichés or descriptions that would be too common. For example, don’t just say you’re hardworkingexplain what has driven you to become as diligent as you are and why you feel it is important.

How to prepare: Rehearse answering this question. Try talking about your passions, hobbies, and interests. You can discuss what inspires you or what your friends like about you. Be specific. Again, you want to make yourself memorable.

Socialize And Enjoy Life

It may come as a surprise, but having a social life is just as important as keeping the grades up. Employers consider personality and emotional intelligence when it comes to cultural fit, and your social interactions are where these characteristics come from. Your life experiences also provide you with information to pull from during the interview process. At the same time, be responsible. A DUI or consequences from poor decisions and actions can have a negative impact on your future employment.

Go To An Event You’ve Never Attended

The chances of absolutely;nothing;happening on your campus at any given point in time are pretty slim. The problem might be, however, that the things that are going on just aren’t on your radar. Challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and attend an event that you’ve never gone to before.

Get As Much Work Experience As Possible

Activities That DO Impress Colleges!!! OWN the College Admissions Process

Although Wessell suggests logging as many on-the-job hours as possible, she cautions, I dont mean have one internship you do every single summer, or be a camp counselor every single summer, or be a receptionist at the local dentist every weekend. Instead, try out as many different kinds of work experiences as you can.

Why you should do this while youre still in college: Its a time when you can job-hop without looking unreliable or flaky. During college, youre totally OK to have a new internship every summer; youre totally OK to have a job every year of college, maybe even every semester, Wessel says. When you graduate from college, if you have a new job every six months, that looks really bad.

Doing a variety of jobs is the best way for you to figure out what you want to do after college and, just as important, what you dont want to do. Wessel explains, This is the time you should figure out what you love doing, what you hate doing, what youre good at, what youre bad at.

Become A Campus Couple

Youre in college, youre young, and youre surrounded by a bunch of other students who are so much like you. Before you know it, youre in love. Enjoy it! Campus can be a surprisingly romantic place to go on dates: enjoy a picnic for lunch, watch a school theater performance, and finish the night with a walk around the campus. Dont put pressure on yourself to find The One, but also dont hesitate to love in college.

What Do You Like

The first thing to consider when picking a major is what you like to do. By the time you graduate high school youll have enough information and experience from your classes to figure out what you might or might not be interested in pursuing. Here are some ways you can dig deeper:

  • List 10 things you love. Listing what you love doing, both inside or outside the classroom, is a great way to see possible paths you can take. If you enjoy art and drawing but youre also interested in technology, consider majoring in graphic design. If youre into business and traveling, investigate majoring in international business.
  • Make a list of strengths and weaknesses. Figuring out your strengths and weaknesses can help you assess what kind of major to go into. For example, if public speaking isnt really your thing, you might want to avoid majors that could lead to careers like being a news anchor or spokesperson. You can also take your weaknesses and build on them in college. If public speaking is something you want to improve, go ahead and take a speech class. You might love it!
  • Use the Roadmap to Careers Connect your interests to majors and careers, and explore video interviews with professionals in different industries to hear how they got where they are today. Use your College Board login to map your futureits free for students who take the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT, or the SAT.

Get Involved On Campus

The Real Reasons Students Get Bored In Class And The Way ...

College campuses across America are rife with student organizations, clubs and activities. Not only do they foster friendships, but club involvement enriches student resumes. Participation shows employers you did more than the bare minimum in college. It demonstrates that you can balance school work with extracurricular activities. In many cases, it also shows your ability to work with a team. Campus involvement also builds a transferable skill set you can apply in the workforce.

One way to gain professional experience is to join groups that have a board, suggests Monica Kielawa, talent acquisition specialist at Combined Insurance. She explains that many colleges have degree-specific groups that allow anyone to join. You can gain experience by assisting in event planning, managing the groups budget and more. It may not be professional work, but it can be added to your resume with the skills you learned during your time there, she says.

Question : Whom Do You Most Admire

what to bring to college (and what not to) | college essentials

Why they’re asking this: From this question, colleges can get a sense of your values. If the person you most admire is Justin Bieber, for example, colleges might wonder about your priorities.

What they’re looking for: Don’t limit your answer just to naming the person. Why do you admire that person? For instance, many people say that the person they most admire is a parent. But what specifically has that parent done that you admire so much? In short, don’t forget the details.

How to prepare: Think deeply about your response to this question. If the person you admire is somebody you know, practice by giving your answer to that person. You’ll know you’ve answered the question well if you’re rewarded with a hug or even a few tears from your audience.
