When Should I Sell Back My Used Textbooks

Sell Back Your Used Textbooks

Whens the best time to sell back used textbooks? We spoke with Dean Graham, associate director at the college bookstore at UMaine to find out how to get the most money for used books.

The simple answer is, the best time to sell used textbooks is as soon as possible. Thats because school bookstores need a certain amount of each book for the next semester. Once that need is filled, the schools will still buy the books at lower prices.

As soon as possible generally means the last week of the semester or the first few days of finals week. One exception is that used books for classes that are only taught in fall or spring should be held onto just a little longer for the biggest payout.

    Best Places To Resell Your Textbooks

    Now that you have some different ideas of ways to resell your textbooks, where can you actually do it? Here are our favorite places to do it!

    1. AbeBooks

    AbeBooks is a great place to resell your textbooks, but it does require a bit more work than some of the other places on this list. You setup your own shop, ship your own products, and basically run your own store. However, they do have great prices as a result.

    2. Amazon

    Amazon is the market leader in textbooks and one of the largest online marketplaces in the world. When it comes to reselling textbooks, Amazon makes it incredibly easy. All you have to do it enter the ISBN number, and you can quickly list your textbook. You do have to ship out your own book when it sells.

    3. Barnes and Noble

    I think a lot of people forget about Barnes and Noble being online, not just a store, but they have a huge website and a great textbook resell program. They also make the process of reselling your textbooks easy, by simply having you enter your book’s ISBN number, accepting their offer, and sending in your books.

    The only drawback is your books have to be worth at least $10.;

    4. BookByte

    BookByte focuses a lot of its effort on textbook buyback, and they make the process easy. You simply enter your book information, accept the offer, and send back your books. They offer free shipping back on any textbook valued at $10 or more.;

    5. BookScouter

    What You Need To Do Before You Sell Textbooks

    College Books

    Always remember that your used books condition can determine the price. Take a used car placed on the market, for example. You will get more money if your textbook is in superb condition. Bookstores understand that students make notes in the margins, highlight passages, among many others.;

    However, that does not mean those who will buy the book will be happy with it. For all you know, it might not be necessary for the students as it was for you. However, some notes you make in the textbook could help other students in the course. At times , it can increase the books value. But it is best not to count on it. Avoid it as much as possible.;

    So clean the pages and make sure it does not damage the book. Try to prevent the books from further damage. When the next semester begins, use the painters tape to secure your textbooks covers and bindings.;

    If you want to make notes in the book, use small adhesive papers. That will keep your textbooks in good condition until you get ready to sell them.;

    Choose The Right Shipping Method

    While resellers cover the books shipping for you, if youre going to sell directly to buyers, you must pack and ship each book one by one or per order. To cut down on shipping costs, especially if you plan to offer free shipping to buyers, send your books media mail.

    Media mail is one of the most cost-effective shipping methods. Its available from the U.S. Postal Service, and you can only use it to ship media materials such as books, DVDs, and CDs. The shipping method takes a bit longer than other options, usually between two and eight days.

    Sell Used Books Directly To Students

    Some of your underclassmen will need to get the same textbooks you bought last semester. You can sell your books directly to these students.

    Pros: You can potentially make a profit by cutting out the middleman.

    Cons: Finding a buyer isn’t always easy. Even students who want to save money might feel uncomfortable paying you for textbook. There’s also the possibility that students will drop some classes. When that happens, they may come to you for a refund. You don’t have to give them their money back, but it’s an awkward conversation that can make you look like the bad guy on campus.

    When Selling Books Back Too Early Hurts A Students Grade

    Not every student will want to sell their textbooks back just before finals week or in the first two days of finals week. Of course textbooks are needed for studying and finals week is a big time for that.;Students who tend to cram during finals week will have a hard time taking advantage of Grahams advice to sell books early.

    Studying is very important because thats why students are in school, says Graham.;You just have to weigh the benefits. The student who waits until the last minute to study cant always sell their books early enough to get the best price. The student who has studied all along and feels good about their command of the material is in a better position to sell their textbooks back earlier and get the most money.

    Students who study all semester long will have the best chance of picking up a little extra money for used textbooks. If a student buys a book for $100, they might get $50 for it during finals week and $38 for it afterward. A student who feels confident that they know the material can pick up $12 extra for that book. For the student who has waited until the last minute to study, it might be worth the extra $12 to keep the book an extra week and study, study, study.

    The students who study right along have the inside track because they can sell their books back early, Graham says.

    Choose The Right Reseller

    If youre not selling your books directly, finding the right reseller for your textbooks can take a bit of trial and error. One company can give you a really low quote or refuse to buy a book at all, while another company offers more.

    It pays to shop your books around. You can use a tool like BookScouter;to see which sites offer the best price for each book and which sites are currently accepting the titles you have.

    Just type each books ISBN into the site. The website searches through 30 vendors who buy back books and lets you know which one offers the best price. From there, you can visit each vendors website to finalize the sale and arrange for shipping and payment.

    Since many vendors have minimum buy-back amounts, it sometimes makes sense to go with a vendor thats willing to buy back several books rather than find a vendor offering the highest price on a single volume. Depending on how many books you have and the offers you get, you can sell your books to more than one reseller to get the most cash.

    Also, the book titles resellers;accept change over time. If they refuse a particular title one month, it can be worth it to check back later to see if theyll buy it.

    Top 10 Places To Sell Books For Cash

    Here are the top 10 places to sell books for cash, while decluttering or just to make a little extra money for something you want or need.

    Before I begin the list though you need to understand that not all places you can sell your books are equal.

    You’ve got to find the place which will take the types of books you’re selling, in the condition you’ve got them in.

    That is why, below, I’ve separated out this list to discuss first general books, and then specifically textbooks.

    Further, when comparing prices for how much places will pay for your book it isn’t always easy to compare apples to apples.

    That’s because you need to consider the payment method, how much the fees are, and even things like convenience of being able to print out a shipping label or paying for postage.

    If you’ve got to pay postage, for example, it will effect how much you have in your pocket at the end of the transaction.

    Similarly, the more convenient it is to sell your books, typically the less you’ll get paid for them. The harder you’ve got to hustle to get the best price the more you can, in theory, profit. But you have to know if it is worth your time.

    Know Your Book’s ISBN Number

    To sell your books at many of the websites or locations I’ve suggested below you’ll need to know your book’s ISBN number.

    The ISBN number is a 10 to 13 digit number usually displayed above or below the bar code that is on the back of the book .
