Oklahoma Won Every Wcws Game With Its Back Against The Wall

While a top seed winning a national championship sounds fairly straightforward, the Sooners’ path featured multiple losses and the constant threat of elimination.

Oklahoma opened its WCWS run against unseeded James Madison, a program making its first appearance in the tournament. The Sooners were shocked in extra innings, losing 4-3 and heading straight to the elimination bracket.

What followed were single-elimination games against Georgia and UCLA, and then a chance for revenge against James Madison. Needing two wins to advance to the national finals, Oklahoma beat JMU in 6-3 and 7-1 wins, the former coming thanks to a seventh-inning tiebreaking rally.

In the finals, Oklahoma lost 8-4 to Florida State in Game 1, once again putting them in a win-or-go-home position.

Interest In Softball Is Higher Than Ever Despite Ncaas Scheduling Issues

The WCWS viewership has been on the rise for decades, and this years tournament continued that trend.

The 2021 WCWS shattered the previous viewership record and easily became the most-watched world series in history. The tournament drew an average of 1.20 million viewers per game, an increase of 10% from the previous world series, and the three-game final series averaged 1.84 million viewers per game, an increase of 15% from the last world series.

Excluding the NBA playoffs, the WCWS pulled in the two largest ESPN audiences since Aprils NFL draft, with Game 1 attracting an average of 1.86 million viewers and Game 2 averaging 2.08 million viewers.

And yet, the mismanaged and poorly constructed schedule of the series belies its popularity.

The 2021 WCWS was originally scheduled across seven days from June 3 to 9, but it was stretched through June 10 because of a rain delay. The lengthened schedule gave the womens teams eight days to play up to 17 games. In contrast, the mens College World Series is scheduled from June 19 to 30, giving the mens teams four more days to play up to 17 games.

In the mens CWS, each team is guaranteed at least three rest days throughout the tournament and could have a maximum of six rest days depending on how many wins it racks up. In the WCWS, each of the eight teams received only one rest day this year, and several teams that entered the losers bracket early on were forced to play doubleheaders.

Game 2 proved to be the turning point in the series. With Oklahoma losing Game 1, the team faced elimination in Game 2. A loss by the Sooners would mean Florida State would walk away as champs. A win would prolong the series and keep Oklahoma alive.

That’s precisely what happened. Oklahoma won 6-2, taking Florida State to a do-or-die Game 3. Oklahoma won that contest also, fighting their way back to win the WCWS for the fifth time.

  • Format Change Will Add Schedule Flexibility And Additional Rest For The Players Beginning With The 2022 Championship

The Division I Competition Oversight Committee approved expanding the Women’s College World Series to a nine-day event, beginning with the 2022 championship .

The change to the format will eliminate the doubleheader for teams that lose on Day 1 of the event, and it will also add a day of rest for the two teams that advance to the finals.

Previously, the event was conducted over a seven-day period, which limited schedule flexibility. The Division I Softball Committee believes expanding the event two additional days will help enhance the championship for all those involved.

“What we’ve accomplished with this format change for the Women’s College World Series is further prioritization of student-athlete rest, recovery and preparation during the event and more flexibility to manage weather delays in Oklahoma City,” said Sandy Atkins, committee chair and deputy director of athletics at Troy. “The engagement from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, particularly the active coaches who have participated in the Women’s College World Series, helped identify the day off before the championship series and minimizing doubleheaders as key recommendations to improve the championship.

“That focused feedback helped us narrow in on this alternative format that targets those priorities, while still preserving the format components that allow for a competitive series and quality experience for teams and fans.”

Women’s College World Series Expanding From 7 Days To 9

OKLAHOMA CITY The NCAAs Division I Competition Oversight Committee has approved expanding the Womens College World Series from seven days to nine, starting with the 2022 event.

The change, announced Wednesday, will eliminate the doubleheader for teams that need to stay alive after losing on the opening day of the event. There also will be a new day of rest for the two teams that advance to the finals.

The previous format limited schedule flexibility. In June, Florida State and Oklahoma State played a game that started at nearly midnight because of a rain delay and didnt end until after 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso and Florida State coach Lonni Alameda, whose teams played for the national championship last season, were among the most outspoken about the need for change, saying the men’s College World Series is more accommodating because it is longer with more off days built in.

Its very uncomfortable when we are talking to our players about standing up for what is right, yet, what is happening around us is not right, Gasso said during last season’s event. And the players will do whatever you put in front of them. Theyre not going to complain. Theyre going to go to bed at three, wake up at seven, because its the World Series. But thats not the memory they need to have.

Committee chair Sandy Atkins said engagement from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association helped identify the most pressing needs.
