What Is A Good Sat Essay Score

The SAT used to offer an optional essay. In 2021, however, the College Board announced it would no longer offer the SAT essay. The only exception to this policy is if your state requires the SAT, in which case you may need to take the essay on an SAT School Day.

Even though colleges can’t require the SAT essay anymore, some students taking the SAT on a school day may be interested in getting a good essay score for their own satisfaction. The SAT essay is scored separately from Math and EBRW. You’ll get 50 minutes to write an essay that analyzes the author’s claims and argument in a given passage.

Two graders will read your essay and assign you a score on a scale of 1-4 in three categories: Reading, Analysis, and Writing. The total score range is 2-8 for each category. A perfect SAT essay score would be three 8’s that’s a 4 from both graders in all three categories.

Although the College Board doesn’t report any percentiles for the SAT essay, it does provide the average scores for each category based on 2020 data:

  • Reading: 5
  • Analysis: 3
  • Writing: 5

Generally speaking, an adequate SAT essay score is anything above these averages, but it’s better to aim higher if possible. For a more in-depth look at the SAT essay and how students score on it, the charts below tell you what percentage of test-takers earned each possible score in the three categories:

Schools Temporarily Going Test Optional In 2021

Because of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools have adopted a test optional policy for students who are applying to college during the 2021-2022 admissions cycle.

Initially, some schools implemented a test optional policy to accommodate applicants who were affected by the cancellation of SAT testing dates in 2020. But many schools have since chosen to extend their test optional policies indefinitely. That means that we dont know if or when many test optional schools will reinstate SAT scores as a required component of their application process.

To stay up-to-date on the testing policies for each school youre applying to, check in frequently with those schools admissions websites. For a list of schools that are temporarily test optional , check out this article.

What Is A Good Sat Score Overall

In general, any SAT score above the 50th percentile, or median, can be considered a decent score, since this means you’ve performed better than the majority of test-takers.

Scoring in the 50th percentile, however, won’t cut it at most selective colleges. The standard for a good SAT score increases considerably depending on how competitive the applicant pool is. This is why it’s typically better to aim for at least the 75th percentile, or 1200 or higher.

Your SAT score, which ranges from 400 to 1600, is the sum of your two section scores: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing . Each section uses a scale of 200-800 in 10-point increments. A good score on Math or EBRW, then, would be around 600.

Percentiles can be used to see how well you did compared with other test-takers. Refer to the following percentile charts to see what constitutes a good SAT score. Note that the percentile rankings for scores may change slightly from year to year.

Other Factors That Affect Entry To Florida Schools

HOW TO GET INTO UCLA/ USC/ UCSD/ UC DAVIS! |GPA, SAT, ACT, STATS, EXTRACURRICULARS, ESSAYS|

SAT scores, of course, are just one part of the application. The most important piece of nearly any college application is going to be a strong academic record. High grades in challenging courses are a better predictor of college success than a high-pressure test you took on a Saturday morning. Advanced Placement, IB, Honors, and dual enrollment courses can all play a significant roll in the admissions process.

These top Florida colleges and universities all have holistic admissions, so decisions are based on more than numerical measures. Depending on the school, a winning essay, meaningful extracurricular activities and good letters of recommendation might be important parts of the application process. Some schools will also use interviews to get more information about applicants.

If you click on the school’s name in the table above, you’ll find information about enrollment, admissions, financial aid, popular majors, athletics, and more. You’ll also find a graph of GPA, SAT score, and ACT score data for students who were accepted, rejected, and waitlisted.

Some of the schools here are test-optional. While they don’t require SAT/ACT scores as part of the application, if your scores are strong, it’s a good idea to submit them anyway.

Get Started On The Application Process As Early As You Can

Traditionally, the college application process including the college exams is something that is thought to take place during a students senior year of high school. But the truth is that those who start the process far before that are the ones that are going to enjoy the greatest amount of success.

Applying to a school such as Princeton begins for some people during their freshman year of high school or even earlier. What that means is that making sure that you have the right kinds of courses, the right kinds of extracurriculars and are forming positive relationships with the faculty and counselors at your high school can end up playing a big role!

You already know the importance of challenging yourself in your curriculum. It is also important to find several extracurriculars that you can commit your time and energy. Ideally, students will have somewhere between three major extracurricular activities that they take part in throughout the majority of their high school career. Beyond that, it is considered a major positive if students have managed to earn roles of leadership within those groups.

When it comes to the actual application process, getting started early is important as well. Students need to keep in mind that they do not only have to fill out the application but also have to request documents, get letters of recommendation and much more. Procrastinating on this will only make the process more difficult and will likely only render less ideal results.

The Personal Statement Still Matters

And while we often emphasize the importance of the personal statement to get in , the weaker the grades, scores, and extracurriculars, the lower the chances thats without a doubt. Weve had a much easier time getting a strong student academically and extracurricular-wise than a student who is weaker.

For weaker students, the personal statement may sometimes be enough to sway the minds of the admissions officers, and thats where we really shine and we know we are going above and beyond to help the candidate.

Weve always said the weakest student Ive ever helped get into an Ivy League university had a 3.3 unweighted GPA and a subpar SAT score. Like we said, it has happened before but its much harder to accomplish.

Parents and students who think that a 4.0 and 1600 SAT score are enough to get into a top university are in for a huge surprise.

Because those stats are no longer considered impressive in the eyes of the admissions committee those stats are considered very average. In fact, there were 12,000 students who applied to Stanford last year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

In todays digital era, the equivalent of a 4.0 GPA and 1600 SAT score student 10-15 years ago means accomplishing much more today and requires much higher standards to be considered truly competitive and creme of the crop.

And that means a stellar academic and extracurricular profile and of course, a powerful application to seal the deal.

Obsessing Over The Perfect Sat Or Act Score

When many families first come to me and we have our Ace the Test: Game Plan consultation, they usually start rattling off the same 20-30 colleges as targets to aim for. And when I start working my magic and show them the median 50 percentile ranges for these schools so we can create a target SAT or ACT score together, many of these new clients make the knee-jerk assumption that they need a 1600 on the SAT or a 36 on the ACT. After all, HOW WILL I GET INTO YALE IF IM NOT PERRRRFECT?!

And a perfect score on the ACT and SAT is pretty rare! Only one-tenth of 1% of ACT test takers get a 36, and its roughly the same who get a perfect score on the SAT. Seems like if you spend all your time trying to be perfect, youre a shoe-in, right?

However, statistics arent on your side with that line of thinking: Stanford rejects around 69% of applicants with perfect SAT scores, while Harvard rejects over half. Thats pretty daunting! I mean, if all those perfect students got rejected, do you even stand a chance??

Test Scores Wont Get You In But They Will Keep You Out

When we talk about test scores, its good to go by the general principle that test scores wont grant you admission to your dream school, but scoring below the typical range of applicants to a certain school can negatively affect your chances of getting in. You should focus on getting the best score that you can, but if you have trouble with test-taking or your score isnt exactly where you want it to be, you should know that this isnt a death sentence for your application.

Obviously, you are not a number. If youre reading this, youre likely a high school student with lots of different interests, objectives, quirks, and passions. Admissions committees understand this as well! It wouldnt be fair to judge every applicant based on numbers, and its safe to say that almost no top colleges today are using this method for admissions. Standing out as an applicant means more than just having good test scores or good grades.

Be Realistic About Your Chances

The ranges in the graph tell you if you are within the SAT score range of students who get into the Ivy League schools. They ranges do not tell you if you are likely to get in. Many of the Ivies have single-digit acceptance rates, and the great majority of applicants have scores within or above the ranges in the table. A perfect 1600 on the exam is no guarantee of admission, and many straight “A” students with exceptional SAT scores receive rejection letters.

Because of the highly competitive nature of Ivy League admissions, you should always consider these eight institutions to be reach schools even if your SAT scores are on target for getting in.
