Most accepted students rank in the top 20% of their high school graduating class and have a GPA of 3.45 or higher. In addition, all applicants must have an ACT composite score of at least 19 or an SAT score of 980, although most accepted students score between 20 and 30 on the ACT.

As colleges shut down and move classes online, Berea College is doing things a little differently. On March 10, Lyle Roelofs was one of the first college presidents in America to cancel brick and mortar classes at his school of 1,600 undergrads in the small town of Berea, Kentucky. Unlike the vast majority of institutions, he didnt announce a move to online education. He posted his reasoning on Bereas COVID-19 information page: Many students will be returning to areas where they do not have adequate internet access to participate in online courses.

Berea was founded in 1855 to educate freed slaves and disadvantaged whites as social equals. It has only ever accepted applicants from low-income families. Students come from households that earn, on average, $29,000. They pay no tuition, 98% are eligible for Pell grants and all of them work at least 10 hours a week on campus. Some 7% are foreign students from developing countries like Somalia and Kyrgyzstan.

Forbes ranks Berea #464 on its list of 650 Top Colleges. Washington Monthly gives it a high rating because Berea does such a good job of graduating students with significant financial need.

However, a group of sophomores was in the midst of engineering courses that required hands-on use of machinery like lathes and drill presses. Those students will receive a grade of incomplete. Theyre going to have to come back in the fall and get their hands on the machines, says Roelofs.

After making the hard decision to close Berea College to in-person learning back in March becoming the first college in the state to do so Berea College President Lyle Roelofs said re-opening plans were just as hard to determine.

We have been credited for an early, but correct decision, he said. The decision to re-open was equally as challenging for us as how and when to close.

Roelofs informed the Berea City Council Tuesday night that the college faculty and staff wanted to give as much choice as they can to their near 1,600 students.

For the incoming first years or transfers planning to attend college in the fall, an option was given to either defer their admission until January without penalty or come to campus as originally intended.

A vast majority almost 350 students chose in-person.

The president said the college would welcome these students on Saturday and Sunday during move-in, an event which will look a lot different this year.

Students will be moved in during certain time frames with half of the students moving in on Saturday and the other half on Sunday.

Additionally, only two people per student are allowed on campus to assist in the move-in process. A mask is required.

Furthermore, students planning to move on campus this week will have to bring a negative COVID-19 test result as their ticket onto campus, Roelofs explained.

Roelofs also discussed mask policies at the college.
