The Evolution Of The Terminology Of Degrees

How Many College Degrees Did Robert Mugabe Have

The naming of degrees eventually became linked with the subjects studied. Scholars in the faculties of arts or grammar became known as “master”, but those in theology, medicine and law were known as “doctor”. As study in the arts or in grammar was a necessary prerequisite to study in subjects such as theology, medicine and law, the degree of doctor assumed a higher status than the master’s degree. This led to the modern hierarchy in which the Doctor of Philosophy , which in its present form as a degree based on research and dissertation is a development from 18th- and 19th-century German universities, is a more advanced degree than the Master of Arts . The practice of using the term doctor for PhDs developed within German universities and spread across the academic world.

The French terminology is tied closely to the original meanings of the terms. The baccalauréat is conferred upon French students who have successfully completed their secondary education and admits the student to university. When students graduate from university, they are awarded licence, much as the medieval teaching guilds would have done and they are qualified to teach in secondary schools or proceed to higher-level studies. Spain had a similar structure: the term “Bachiller” was used for those who finished the secondary or high-school level education, known as “Bachillerato”. The standard Spanish university 5-years degree was “Licenciado”, . The highest level was “Doctor”.

Professional Certificates And Licenses

Earning a college degree isn’t always the answer. Sometimes a professional certificate makes a lot more sense especially if your decision to pursue a higher education is based on economics. Career success can often be obtained as easily with a professional certification as it can with a traditional college degree especially in highly technical fields where employers are more concerned with your skill set than your college credential. Earning a professional certification is also a lot less expensive.

Unlike undergraduate degree programs, many of which focus on liberal arts education, professional certification programs focus almost exclusively on skills development skills that are directly relevant to performing a specific job or function. On the downside, some certification programs are so narrow in focus that they miss the depth and well-rounded education provided by a college degree. Still, one educational path is not necessarily better than the other they simply offer different benefits. If you want to become an electrical engineer, a college degree makes more sense than a professional certification. If you want to become an electrician, all you need is a professional certification.

More Stats On People With A Degree In The World

The world is home to more than 7.2 billion people, but according to new research findings by the Asian Development Bank and Harvard University, only 6.7 percent have college degrees. Moreover, with concerted efforts aimed at getting everyone enlightened, Bloomberg reports an average increase of 0.78 percent in the past decade up from 5.9 percent.

No one would have expected such a small increase in the percentage of people who would wish to pursue a degree. A look at research findings by 100people.org further helps to understand these trends. In the year 2016 for example, slightly above 525 million people of the total global adult population had attained a college degree. From these findings, it was deduced that 1 in 100 people had obtained a certificate for a degree course.

Taking note of OECDs emphasis on adult literacy starting from people age 25 years, findings by the US Bureau of Census further reinforces that every year, more people register for a college degree program. In the United States alone, the figures translate to a third of the total population.

Bourdieu And Cultural Capital

Many scholars have studied educational attainment in the US as a form of social reproduction and stratification. In 1977, Pierre Bourdieu presented the idea that education leads to social reproduction and a stratified society by honoring the cultural capital of elite classes. Students who possess the valued cultural capital, according to Bourdieu, are rewarded with high academic achievement.

When elite class members enter the workforce, they are channeled into high paying jobs and powerful positions within society, while those who did not achieve the same level of academic success fall into subordinate occupations and status levels. By rewarding the desired cultural capital with high academic achievement, upper classes are able and prepared to reach higher levels of educational attainment. Members of the working class, on the other hand, are not rewarded for their cultural capital in schools, and are instead socialized for working class jobs.

Online Classroom Contact Hours

Many online community college courses offer flexible schedules and are available during the day or evening, making it accessible for working adults to fit in their course schedules. The price of online classes is reasonable, and they are a viable option for community college education. When taking online community college courses, students usually enroll in a certain number of contact hours, which can vary from school to school and class to class.

A student should always check with the professors of the lessons they are interested in to determine how many contact hours each course offers. Some community colleges may allow students to take one or two online courses while still attending classes in a traditional setting. For example, Northern Essex Community College in Massachusetts has an eCollege program that enables students to take one course online every semester.

When taking online classes at a community college, students can also learn from faculty members who are experts in their fields. Although many professors for online courses teach at traditional schools, the Internet provides community colleges with more of an opportunity to hire highly qualified instructors.

    Social Class And Education

Educational attainment is one of the primary indicators of social class in the United States. While the American social class system is a vaguely defined concept with many contradicting theories, educational attainment emerges as one of the top assessments of social class. Not only is a high educational attainment a status symbol by itself, but it is also very closely related to the other two main indicators of social class: occupation and income. A graduate degree and the roughly seven to eight years of post-secondary education serve as the main requirement for entering the “professions” and becoming part of the professional middle class.

Education is a major key in becoming a more privileged member of the American middle class. Overall, educational attainment is the main entrance barrier into more privileged parts of the middle class as it is not only of high value but is also the requirement for becoming a professional and earning the corresponding income. This corresponding income is typically significantly higher than that of someone without this higher level of educational attainment in the United States. Exceptions include some entrepreneurs who can rank anywhere in the class system but are usually not referred to as professional middle class unless they are of the professions.

He Lied To Have Graduated As Best In His Class

The college degree of Donald Trump was never a big deal. However, he decided to make it by speculating about Barack Obamas GPA.

Donald Trump then influenced the media outlets. He asked them to report that he graduated first in his class.

Thats from Wharton School of Pennsylvania. After lying about his grades, he threatened to sue the institutions he attended if they released his GPA.

What amused people is not the GPA itself but the lie. Why did he lie? A background check was carried out on his education by the interested parties.

They found out Trump had lied about his GPA. He was not even close and had graduated without honors.

To graduate with honors at Pennsylvania, the GPA had to be more than 3.40. This means he was just some other average student or worse.

Or maybe he might have received a sanction for student conduct violations or academic integrity.

There are clear disparities in the percentage of college degree-holders ages 25 and over among racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.

White Americans made up the overwhelming majority of those who hold college degrees in 2019, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the group. Black, Asian, Latino/a, and Native American individuals combined made up less than 30% of the population 25 and older who have earned a college degree.

This lack of equity in educational attainment has become increasingly concerning to experts because of its direct effects on employment and opportunities for people of color throughout the country.
