Can I Take 5 Years To Finish My Degree

Benefits in the Royal Air Force

Some degrees typically take longer to complete due to heavy course requirements. If you major in a degree listed below, the Air Force will allow you to stretch classes across 5 years. We recommend that you do so! It is not fun to take 20 credit hours a semester – along with summer classes – just to finish in 4 years. Also, 5th-year cadets who are on scholarship in a Secretary of the Air Force Approved 5-Year Major, see table below, will remain on scholarship during that 5th-year.

* The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a department within the College of Engineering, only offers a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering , but undergraduates can follow an Environmental and Water Resources track of study. ** Degrees must be AFIT approved B.S. degrees. To qualify for additional terms, cadets in these majors must have also completed the following courses: Calculus I & II , Statistics I, and Operations Research / Management Science. The Calculus and Statistics courses must come from the Math and Statistics departments.

Making It Work Under Difficult Circumstances

Perseverance and dedication are key characteristics of successful students. Spittler says shes helped hundreds of students, and always loves to hear their stories. A few of them still stand out in her memory.

She recalls advising an online military student who was deployed overseas. He was interested in a masters program at National. She told him itd be a great program for him, but that he needed to take the classes in sequence, without breaks in between. She also told him his options in case he needed to drop a class.

Throughout the program, the student kept in touch with Spittler and, although she knew he was deployed, she didnt know where. Spittler says when a student is on active duty, You cant really discuss where theyre at because of security reasons. I really dont ask.

Wherever he was serving, the time difference was significant, and the student would stay up late in order to call Spittler during her office hours if he needed to speak to her. His ability to focus on difficult coursework while deployed really captured her attention and she praised him for his efforts.

Finally, he arrived at his capstone project, which is the last course in a National University program. Going into the last course, he had all As, but he was upset to receive a B+ in his final class.

She told him not to be so unhappy about the B+, but rather to be proud of what he had accomplished. It was no small thing to transition from one country to another and then to transition home.

What Obstacles Do Active

Active duty servicemembers always face the chance of deployment. What if a student starts classes and then gets deployment orders, orders to go to training, or are temporarily assigned elsewhere? Spittler says NU has military-friendly policies in place to help their students navigate such issues.

Active-duty servicemembers also may have irregular schedules that make even online education difficult to sustain, such as 24-hour shifts, followed by an immediate call back to work.

Not all military work is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., which are typical military hours, she says. Advisors are available when these students need options and solutions. Sometimes military students need to drop a class, but again, the four-week monthly start format of National classes provides many opportunities for students to jump back in when they are ready. Other students may need to drop classes for a period of time when their annual Tuition Assistance runs out or when they cant afford the books required for a class.

Spittler says that advisors will tell students in this situation, Thats OK, well check in with you in a couple of months. You can let me know where youre at.

Think About What Afsc Interests You

It’s never too early to begin thinking about what Air Force jobs interest you. Maybe you have a knack for calculus and would be an innovative engineer, or maybe you have a fascination with foreign cultures and would be a great intelligence officer. There are steps you can take early-on to increase your chances of being assigned your desired AFSC. For example, if you wish to become a logistics officer, enroll in AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics and look for colleges with supply-chain management courses. If your dream is to become a pilot, begin working towards getting a pilot’s license. A little bit of preparation can go a long way.

Limitations On Usage How You Can Use Your Ta

Tuition Assistance is designed to help Airmen achieve certain degrees and education levels. It is also designed to benefit the Air Force. Because of this, you can only use Tuition Assistance benefits to achieve a degree higher than your current degree. For example, you cannot use the Tuition Assistance program to achieve a second Associates, Bachelors, or Masters degree.

There are some exceptions to this rule. You can always use Tuition Assistance to achieve another CCAF degree, regardless of your current degree level.

You can also use Tuition Assistance to achieve an Associates Degree from a civilian college if you already have your CCAF, provided your civilian Associates is in a different subject and you do not already have an Associates or Bachelors degree.

Finally, you may be eligible to obtain a second Masters Degree if it is on an approved list of critical education programs. Some examples of critical education programs include certain graduate foreign language/affairs programs and cyber law masters degrees.

Tuition Assistance is also limited to Masters Degree level courses. There are other ways to get the Air Force to pay for a post-graduate course or doctoral degrees, but these are generally specialized programs and highly competitive. You will need to contact your education office for a list of current programs for this level of education. Keep in mind, you may incur a service commitment for this type of training.

Changes To Air Force Tuition Assistance Benefits

Its no secret that our government is facing budget cuts, which have extended to the Department of Defense , and each of the respective military branches.

In recent years, we have seen the cancellation of many military benefits programs due to sequestration and various budget cuts. Tuition Assistance was one of the more popular programs that were temporarily suspended, then later reinstated. The DoD brought back tuition assistance for each branch of service, but the Air Force made a couple changes that may affect the ability of some Airmen to take classes.
