The Purpose Of Gen Ed Courses

General Education Requirements Explained

For some students, general education courses are a puzzle. If youre majoring in Business, why do you have to study Biology? Colleges have several reasons for requiring general education courses. First, many students have uncovered a hidden passion for a field of study as a result of taking a required course. After enjoying a class, you may find yourself minoring or even majoring in a topic you would have never considered. Second, required courses ensure that every college graduate has the same basic set of tools. Colleges want you to graduate with strong analytical and writing skills, plus a basic understanding of modern society. General education courses ensure that Chemistry majors can communicate via writing and English majors understand the scientific method.

What Is A Good Way To Take General Education Courses

College is expensive, and some universities have quite lengthy general education requirements. However, there are smarter ways to complete your generals.

If youre going to an expensive university, you might just want to hold off attending until youve completed your generals at an in-state community college. Just make sure all of your classes transfer before you take them and pay for them.

You can make sure they transfer by working with an adviser at both your university and your in-state community college.

Transferring Credits From Gen Ed Classes

It’s generally quite easy to transfer general education credits you earn at one college to another since these classes teach the same fundamental concepts regardless of the institution.

For example, many students enroll at a local community college for a couple of years so they can get general education requirements out of the way at a much lower price before eventually transferring to a four-year university.

Be sure to consult your academic advisor to ensure your gen ed credits will transfer.

Do I Have To Complete My Generals Before Declaring My Major

You do not have to complete all of your generals before declaring your major. In fact, if you know your major it would be good to check to see if any of the required courses in our major double as courses for your general education requirements.

If you do not have a chosen major, dont worry. Most students dont choose their majors right away. It is good to explore your options to be sure of your path.

What Courses Are Considered Gen Ed Classes

    NJ General Education Foundation

While university standards vary dramatically, here are several categories of classes you will likely find on your Gen Ed requirements. Note: The degree you choose can affect your General Education requirements. For example, although General Education requires math credits across the board, an engineering major would need Calculus 1 and 2, while a music major could take any math available.

English: The skill of composing coherent sentences is sometimes overlooked, but it is one of the most foundational aspects of cultural communication. Nearly every school requires 6 credits of English such as:

    • English Composition

    • College Composition

Math: Whether running an organization, working in a business, or managing a home, adult life goes much more smoothly with at least basic number skills. Most degrees require 3-6 math credits, although math-intensive degrees will require more. Courses that fit into this category include:

    • Algebra –

    • Geometry

    • Languages

    • History

Diversity: A newcomer to Gen Ed requirements, diversity courses teach students to value other cultures and beliefs. Depending on the school, diversity courses may include:

    • Religion

    • Social responsibility

    • World religions

How To Choose Gen Ed Classes

Since the point of gen ed is to broaden college students’ perspectives, students normally can’t take classes within their major to fulfill general education requirements.

Two years of college dominated by gen ed may feel frustrating for those who want to dive into their chosen fields straight away, but students often have more choice over what they learn outside their majors.

Most colleges allow students to choose from long lists of courses for each general education requirement. Options typically include 101 courses and upper-level classes open to both undergraduates and graduate students.
