How To Become A Nurse
Aspiring registered nurses must complete an accredited nursing program. Students can enroll in a two-year diploma or associate program to meet the minimum education requirement. A four-year BSN degree also qualifies graduates for licensure.
Online nursing programs give learners the medical knowledge and hands-on training for nursing careers. BSN programs include specialized courses and clinical rotations. Michigan community colleges want to offer bachelors degrees in nursing to battle a shortage of nurses surging across the state and fueled by the pandemic.
Demand for intensive care and emergency nurses grew by 186% in the past year nationwide, according to a 2021 study by Incredible Health, a nationwide company that helps nurses find jobs.
The Henry Ford Hospital System in Detroit has already arranged a program to soon fly in 500 nurses from the Philippines to meet its needs, said Michael Hansen, the president of the Michigan Community College Association. More are coming from Canada.
Weve got students here in Michigan who are willing and able, if we could just let our colleges train them, Hansen said.
Community colleges have been interested in offering four-year programs since Gov. Jennifer Granholm recommended they do so in the early 2000s, Hansen said. A provision in the Community College Act of 1966 prohibits community colleges from conferring bachelor degrees. It requires legislation for that to be allowed.
The law was amended so now they can offer bachelor degrees in four areas maritime, culinary, energy production and concrete technology to meet local demands, Hansen said.
They have wanted to do more than nursing, but thats being proposed now because of the acute shortage, Hansen said. Community colleges traditionally respond to local workforce needs.
They offer a very good program, its just not enough for what hospitals are requiring now, Roth said.

How Can I Become A Registered Nurse
Becoming licensed as a registered nurse requires an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or diploma, any of which require in-person training and labs as well as significant clinical hours completed at a healthcare facility for clinical experience.2
After successfully completing a prelicensure program in the form of a diploma, ADN or four-year BSN program, graduates must sit for the National Council Licensure Examination . The exam is taken at a Pearson test center, with locations around the country and some internationally as well3. You must pass the NCLEX for licensure.
Once achieving nursing licensure, registered nurses should consider continuing their education. Due to the fast-paced and evolving needs of healthcare, there is an increasing demand for nurses with further education and training that comes from a bachelor’s or master’s degree.1 This increasing demand is emphasized by healthcare organizations.
An online nursing degree can be the best choice for those already working as a registered nurse, as it offers work-life flexibility. At Southern New Hampshire University, there are no set meeting times, and resources like the technology help desk and chat with a librarian are available 24/7. Asynchronous classes mean you can complete your tests and assignments on your own time and keep your life more balanced than a traditional classroom format would allow.

Is The Nursing Program I’m Interested In Good
Just because a school offers a nursing degree doesn’t mean it’s a quality nursing degree.
First, make sure every school and nursing program you apply to is accredited. Any nursing program you apply to should be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing and Education . If you don’t choose an accredited nursing program, you CANNOT sit for the NCLEX and earn an RN license. You’ll likely have difficulty finding a nursing job after graduation.
Second, check out student outcomes. A nursing school may have a low tuition rate and be accredited, but the NCLEX pass rates could leave something to be desired. In 2019, the US saw a total NCLEX first time pass rate of 88.18%. A pass rate below this would be below the national average.
