    Taking The Right Courses

    About

There are a few resources that you should utilize in selecting your courses.

Articulation agreement: a document that lists the courses that are transferable to USC from Californias community colleges and specifies certain requirements those courses can fulfill.

Articulation history: an unofficial breakdown of courses that have previously transferred from four-year institutions and out-of-state community colleges to USC there is no guarantee the courses listed as transferable will continue to be in the future, and if an institution hasnt had many students transfer to USC, its articulation history likely wont be very comprehensive however, this document can still be a very useful resource.

Transferring to USC brochure: a detailed overview of the process of transferring to USC, particularly useful for its list of recommended and required courses by major on pages 12-15 and its explanation of USCs transfer credit policies on page 16.

Transfer Planning Guide: a tool that provides students attending California community colleges or a select few four-year institutions with a transfer course plan.

Heres what your course priorities should be :

  • Math and lower-division Writing requirements
  • Courses required or recommended for your major
  • General Education and foreign language coursework
  • Transferable courses that would earn elective credit

Your registration date and time will tell you when you can access our Online Registration and begin signing up for classes. You may register online at or after your designated time, but not before your date and time.

I Am Not Doing Well In One Of My Chemistry Classes Should I Drop It

If your current grade is around a D or an F grade, then you should consider dropping the course. One or a few W grades will not harm you, whereas a D or an F will significantly lower your GPA. Furthermore, continuing to advanced courses after receiving a D or an F in lower courses almost guarantees more failure. All science is very cumulative.

You have until the Friday of 6th week to drop a lecture class with a W. You will receive a letter grade in the course after this time.

Keep in mind, if you have already received a W for the course, you may not drop it again for a W grade. Per UCSD policy, students who drop a course after the drop with a W deadline , for a course in which they have previously earned a W grade, will instead receive an F grade.

Do not wait until the last minute to drop, to allow for technical issues. Make sure you are in an area with a reliable Internet connection. No exceptions will be made for students who claim their Internet was down.

    Coping With The Unexpected

When something unexpected happens, Jimenez can get anxious like when a book hes supposed to read isnt on his computer.

His memory and involuntary decision-making were impacted, so he constantly checks his iPhone calendar to make sure hes on track. A tutor, provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, visits his house to help him with his studies.

His professors are supportive, one making special office hours for him. And having Baylee helps, letting him know things are going to be OK.

Even though its scary, its also tremendously rewarding, he said.

I can bring my life experiences to the classroom. Im probably older than my professors, he said. I can see that students are really listening to what I have to say. In a sense, I am making a difference in their lives.

I Got A D Or An F In One Of My Classes Do I Have To Retake It

A D grade is considered passing, so you will receive credit for the course. That means you can use the D grade to move on in a sequence. However, moving on when you are not prepared guarantees further low grades. For example, if you receive a D grade in CHEM 6B, you are allowed to move onto 6C however, you almost surely should not, unless your goal is to switch majors but use the courses for General Education requirements.

Upper-division courses have a special rule if you are a major within the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department: you are allowed to graduate with one D in your upper-division coursework for your major.. If you receive multiple D grades, then you must repeat enough to remove all but one D grade.

For F grades, you must repeat the course, if it is a required course for your major. F grades for courses that are not required do not necessarily have to be retaken, but it would be a good idea to repeat them to boost your overall GPA.
