College World Series: Goodbye To Rosenblatt Stadium But Not To Omaha

Oklahoma vs. Texas: 2022 Women’s College World Series Finals Game 2 | FULL REPLAY

For years now, the College World Series has been one of the most exciting and entertaining college sports traditions.

Every year since 1950, great memories, teams, and players have emerged from Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium, the site of the College World Series.

But with the NCAA’s contract with Omaha will end in 2010.

The NCAA said, “Either build a new stadium or the College World Series’ days in Omaha may be over.”

As much as I would hate to see the College World Series leave Omaha, I knew the NCAA was right. Rosenblatt Stadium is still a beautiful park, but it has seen better days.

And besides its age, there has been a growing problem with seating. So, the leaders of Omaha decided that they could not let this annual event get away from its city, so they came to the decision to build a new stadium.

However, this all came at a terrible time for Omaha, which just experienced a tax increase to help fund the new Quest Center.

After a few bumps in the road, along with numerous petitions to stop the new ballpark, the construction plans were finalized.

Officials have decided to put the new stadium in some of the parking lots used for the Quest Center.

However, I am now concerned about the parking. I attended the NCAA men’s second round basketball tournament at the Quest Center, and all of the parking lots were full. I’m not sure they can afford to lose parking.

The Offense Is Pouncing

Twenty-nine of Ole Miss’ 46 NCAA Tournament runs have come between the fifth and seventh innings. This is usually the point of the game where an opponent has to choose between letting its starting pitcher see the Rebels’ lineup a third time or sending in a reliever. No matter what choice the opponent makes, Ole Miss has been feasting.

Rebels hitters are batting .423 with a 1.079 OPS when facing a starting pitcher for a third time in the NCAA Tournament. These pitchers haven’t been slouches. Arizona’s Garrett Irvin, Miami’s Carson Palmquist and Southern Miss’ Hurston Waldrep and Tanner Hall are all pro prospects. But eight of the 28 Rebels who got a third crack at them came around to score.

The first men out of the bullpen haven’t fared much better. They have a collective 8.22 ERA and 1.70 WHIP.

If Ole Miss’ offense keeps making this decision impossible for opposing coaches, this is a good sign, especially in a pitchers’ park that doesn’t lend well to home runs but has outfield alleys conducive to long offensive rallies.

And then there were two.

The 2022 Men’s College World Series crown will now come down to Oklahoma and Ole Miss.

The Sooners are one of only 15 teams that have won multiple national championships, with their first title coming in 1951 and second having come in 1994. The Rebels, however, have never won a title despite six previous appearances in the College World Series.

Ole Miss Baseball Set For Arkansas Rematch In Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. — A win, and you’re in.

After blowing out Arkansas on Monday night in a winner’s bracket game of the College World Series, the Ole Miss Rebels will face the Razorbacks again on Wednesday night where a win would send them to the CWS championship series. Arkansas would have to beat Ole Miss twice in order to eliminate the Rebels and advance to the finals itself.

The matchup on Wednesday was set after Arkansas eliminated Auburn on Tuesday night in Omaha. Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco had high praise for his team’s performance following its win over the Hogs on Monday.

“We were terrific tonight,” Bianco said. “Just really played well. It starts on the mound. Hunter was how he has pitched the second half of the season. Unfortunately for him, we didn’t play great defense early. Not taking anything away from Arkansas, but he shouldn’t have given up a run today.

How Has The Ncaa Division I Baseball Tournament Changed Since Its Inception

The tournament has grown a lot since 1947. There are currently 64 teams that compete in four rounds for the title.

Here are the major changes to the tournament, as they happened:

  • 1948: First-round playoffs were changed to double-elimination.
  • 1949: The final was expanded to a four-team, double-elimination format, and the site changed to Wichita, Kansas.
  • 1950: Site moves to Omaha, Nebraska.
  • 1954: Field expands to 23 teams. The field size bounces around between 21 and 32 for the next two decades. In the 22 years between 1954 and 1975, the field is never the same size two years in a row.
  • 1976: Field expands to 34 teams, where it will stay until 1982.
  • 1982: Field expands to 36 teams. It will expand multiple times in the next few years, before settling at 48 teams in 1987, where it will stay until 1999.
  • 1988-1998: The eight regional champions are seeded into two four-team brackets. Those two brackets play double-elimination with the bracket winners then meeting in a one-game championship.
  • 1999: Field expands to the current size of 64 teams, super regionals are added.
  • 2003: CWS finals become a best-of-three series.

It’s The First National Title In Ole Miss Baseball History

Ole Miss is the 2022 men’s College World Series champion. The Rebels took the best-of-three final from Oklahoma in two games, winning 4-2 on Sunday afternoon to close out the Sooners.

The College World Series started last Friday, and of the eight teams to make it that far in college baseball’s final stage Texas and Stanford — two of the teams thought to have the inside track on winning it all — were the first two schools eliminated. On Tuesday, Notre Dame, which stunned No. 1 overall seed Tennessee in the super regional, suffered its second loss of the CWS, this time to Texas A& M, and was thus eliminated. In the nightcap, Arkansas thumped Auburn in their elimination game to bounce the Tigers from Omaha. We gained more clarity on Wednesday, as Oklahoma defeated and eliminated Texas A& M to punch their ticket to the finals. Arkansas, meanwhile, defeated Ole Miss to force a decisive contest on Thursday afternoon — a game that Ole Miss won by a 2-0 final.

Where Things Currently Stand:

Florida beats LSU 6
  • The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost to the Texas A& M Aggies 5-1, and the Irish became the third team to be eliminated from Omaha. TAMU starter Nathan Dettmer pitched 7 scoreless innings and struck out 6 hitters.
  • The No. 14 Auburn Tigers became the fourth team eliminated from the College World Series on Tuesday following the 11-1 loss to Arkansas in the nightcap. Arkansas starter Will McEntire was dominant in the outing, and the Hogs live to see another day in Omaha.
  • On Wednesday, Oklahoma and Texas A& M will play at 2 p.m. The Aggies have to defeat the Sooners twice in order to make it to the final series. OU just has to win 1 game and it plays for the national title best-of-3 series.
  • Also, Ole Miss and Arkansas will play once again. Arkansas has to defeat the Rebels twice to make it to the final series.

How Does The College World Series Work

Sixty-four teams make the NCAA baseball tournament. The 16 national seeds get to host regionals.

Once the tournament got down to 16 teams, the eight highest remaining seeds got to host Super Regionals, best-of-three series that determined which teams would travel to Omaha for a chance to earn the national title.

Now that the tournament is down to eight teams, it comes down to a double-elimination format in Omaha. The two teams that make it through double-elimination play will then face off in the best-of-three finals.

How Are Teams Selected For The Ncaa Division I Baseball Tournament

Since 1954, the NCAA Division I baseball tournament field has been split into two qualifying groups: The automatic berths, and the at-large selections. Since 2014, that split sees 31 conference champions receive automatic berths, and 33 teams receive at-large bids, decided by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

As part of that selection process, 16 teams receive national seeds, and are offered the option of hosting a super regional if they advance to the second round.

Finding A Third Option

Two great starting pitching performances can get you through a super regional. Ole Miss found that out the easy way in Hattiesburg. But a team needs at least three wins to get to the College World Series final. And that will mean getting a quality performance from No. 3 starter Derek Diamond, as well as potentially some good spot starts from Gaddis, Washburn, Drew McDaniel or whoever may be called upon to start as needed.

Diamond has a 6.89 ERA. Gaddis and Washburn have a collective 4.50 ERA as starters and a 2.49 ERA as relievers. McDaniel has only pitched once in the last month and allowed five runs without completing an inning.

Most teams don’t have reliable No. 3 starters. But Ole Miss will have to capture magic in order to make this trip last.

First College World Series

TD Ameritrade Park hosted its first College World Series in June 2011. Participants were South Carolina Gamecocks, Florida Gators, Vanderbilt Commodores, Virginia Cavaliers, North Carolina Tar Heels, California Golden Bears, Texas A& M Aggies, and Texas Longhorns.

Before the opening game of the CWS between Vanderbilt and North Carolina on Saturday, June 18, the ceremonial first pitch was delivered by former President George W. Bush. Omaha Little Leaguer Henry Slagle had the honor of handing the ball to President Bush as his Memorial Park Little League team greeted the former president on the field. Before the pitch, his father, former President George H. W. Bush, who played for Yale in the first CWS in 1947, delivered a video message christening the new facility. Omaha’s own Gene Klosner sang the stadium’s first CWS national anthem prior to the game. Attendance for the first game was set at 22,745, standing room only, fans. The first CWS pitch at the new park was thrown by UNC’s Patrick Johnson to Vanderbilt’s Tony Kemp at exactly 1:11 PM Central Daylight Time. Vanderbilt’s Connor Harrell hit the first CWS home run in the park in the sixth inning of the game, a two-run blast over the left field wall, as the Commodores went on to beat North Carolina 73.

The first CWS finals in the new ballpark began on Monday, June 27, at 7 PM between the South Carolina Gamecocks and their SEC Eastern Division Rivals, the Florida Gators, in front of 25,851 fans.
