Mhs Students: Overcoming A Lifetime Of Difficulties

How Does Technology Enhance the Learning Environment ...

Milton Hershey Schools graduate outcomes are notable by themselves. They appear even more impressive when considering the additional factors MHS students may overcome on their path to graduation and beyond.

Every MHS student comes from povertybut thats only part of their challenging life circumstances before enrolling. Poverty also contributes to the accumulation of Adverse Childhood Experiences , defined as traumatic events experienced by children before the age of 18.

The MHS mission is to provide a top-notch education and nurturing home life for every student so they can reach their full potential. MHS relies on its full team of experts to educate and care for children coming from differing backgrounds and working through individual Adverse Childhood Experiences. These professionals help MHS students persevere and succeed.

Even before its time to start preparing students for life after graduation, MHS helps its students develop foundational skills that will serve them over time. MHS creates an inclusive environment that promotes growth and imagination. Students live on campus, in homes led by houseparents, who are at the core of the MHS model for care. Because of the generosity of MHS founders Milton and Catherine Hershey, students attend MHS at no cost and all of their needs are provided by the school.

Americas Richest School Serves Low

This Spotlight PA article was produced in partnership with ProPublica and The Philadelphia Inquirer, which is a member of the ProPublica Local Reporting Network. .

Long ago, and to great fanfare, business tycoon Milton Hershey revealed that he had given away his world-famous chocolate company, a gift to the school for poor orphans that he had founded with his wife.

Well, I have no children that is, no heirs, he said in 1923. So I decided to make the orphan boys of the United States my heirs.

Hershey died in 1945, leaving a huge estate and a company that would grow to sell more than 250 million candy bars a year. His generosity, however, has created a dilemma for the Milton Hershey School that many charities would envy: too much money.

Over the years, board members who control Hersheys estate invested in land, stocks, and bonds. They helped transform Hersheys company town into a tourist destination, complete with hotels, amusement-park rides, golf courses, and a conference center all now part of the schools endowment, which includes a controlling stake in the chocolate company.

Federal tax law does not mandate that organizations like the Milton Hershey School spend a particular amount each year on their charitable mission. But the widening chasm between what the school could spend to help poor children and what it actually spends has led alumni, a local probate judge, and the state attorney general to call for the institution to do more.

Milton Hershey School Expands Partnership Program To Help Students Transition Into College

HERSHEY, Pa. The Milton Hershey School helps its students pay for college. Its now expanding its college partnership program which helps students with all other aspects of the transition from one campus to another.

It just makes me feel secure, said MaKayla McDonald, a senior at the school.

McDonald is talking about the schools new partnership with Moravian College in the Lehigh Valley.

Im not a person to ask for help, said McDonald. Knowing that Moravian has different programs, theyre very easy to talk to and theyre very helpful.

What were trying to do is partner with a variety of schools, whether its community colleges, technical schools and four-year programs, said Tanya Baynham, Milton Hersheys vice president of graduate programs for success.

Milton Hershey School pays tuition for low-income students continuing their education. Now, its partnered with 21 colleges and universities to make sure students are getting support in other areas, too.

Naturally, the finances are important, said Baynham, but after that, there are so many barriers that are going to hit you, especially if you are the first in your family to go to college.

These partnerships mean the schools are in contact and that colleges have the supports in place to help students overcome barriers.

The Milton Hershey School continues to expand its partnership program. Officials say since it started four years ago, its made a difference.

The Milton Hershey School: Making Dreams Come True

Careers

Milton Hersheys most cherished contribution to the community was the Hershey Industrial School for orphaned boys. Having no children of their own, Milton and his wife Catherine built the school with the intention of providing these boys with a productive and fulfilling life. Prior to his death, Milton gave his fortune to a trust to fund the schools permanent success. Now called the Milton Hershey School, this institution helps foster the social and academic potential of more than 2,000 boys and girls a year who come from backgrounds of substantial financial and social need.

Like all of the students at Milton Hershey School , Jesper Andersson 17 didnt have the easiest start. As a young child, he moved around a lot and lived between parents who both had substance abuse issues and his grandparents. When he was in sixth grade, his grandparents fell on hard times and their home was foreclosed. That was when Jespers grandmother thought he might find more stability at Milton Hershey School.

Although he wasnt happy about leaving his grandparents, from day one, Jesper felt truly embraced by his houseparents and classmates in ways he didn’t imagine possible. They were there for him when he broke his arm in his first month, and when his beloved grandfather passed away, they even paid for his flight back home so he could be with his grandmother.

The Real Student Debt Crisis

Despite their rigorous high school education and thousands of dollars in college scholarship money, MHS graduates still face major obstacles to earning a degree. Low-income students are less likely to graduate, may take longer to finish their degrees, and are more likely to stop and restart at multiple institutions, research shows.

MHS administrators say they understand these challenges. In 2016, the school created a new department to support students after they leave high school, with regular check-ins and campus visits. Administrators say that since the programs launch, the number of students staying on for their second year of college has increased by 6 percentage points, from 73% to 79%, exceeding the national average.

Low-income students are also at risk of financial trouble when they take on debt to pay for their education.Nonetheless, starting with the class of 2011, administrators made a change that would have serious repercussions for students who dont make it through college. Under the policy, in order to access their scholarship funds, students are required to first take out $2,500 per year in subsidized federal loans, although the required loan can be for a smaller amount under certain circumstances. If they graduate within six years, they can use their scholarship money to pay off the debt. But if they do not, they have to pay the loans back on their own.

While the policy was intended to encourage graduates to stay in school, it has risks.
