The Big Three Ivy League Schools Plus Columbia Continue To Be The Most Selective

Harvard, Princeton, and Yaleknown as the Big Threeare historically the three toughest Ivy League schools to get into. In recent years, they have been joined by Columbia in the top half of the most selective Ivy League schools. In 2021, Columbia edged past Princeton and Harvard to become the most competitive Ivy. While all four schools reported overall acceptance rates below 5%, with a 3.9% acceptance rate, Columbia is now the hardest Ivy League school to get into.

The remaining schools had overall acceptance rates ranging between 5.5% and 8.7% , meaning that, for the first time, acceptance rates for all Ivy League schools were in the single digits. The average acceptance rate across all eight schools was 5.4%.

What Were Waitlist Numbers Like In 2021

We already mentioned that the year you apply to college has a big effect on your chances of being waitlisted at schools you apply to. Thats definitely still true for 2021 college applications. In fact, college waitlist numbers were even higher than usual this year.

Heres why college waitlist numbers were unusually high in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it really difficult for colleges and universities to predict how many students they need to admit in order to fill their freshman class. The pandemic upended the normal application process and admissions patterns, leaving schools saddled with a lot of unknowns about the futureincluding how many students they should admit.

Its also been challenging for schools to predict how many of the students they extend admissions offers to will be likely to accept. Because of this, many highly qualified applicants have been waitlisted this year. Doing this gives the school a large pool of excellent applicants to extend admissions offers to if previously accepted applicants opt to attend another school.

On top of that, many top colleges have adopted a test optional policy for the SAT and ACT over the past two years. You have a much greater chance of getting into an Ivy if you apply early.

You heard me right. Applying early can double or sometimes even triple your chances of getting into an Ivy.

Ivy Leagues know they are competing with other universities for students. Not many people apply to only one Ivyâ¦

However, the Ivys want to retain the highest yield possible. They are less likely to admit a student who they think may end up accepting an offer from another college.
