How Many Of Your College Credits Will Transfer

Your transferable credit hours are largely determined by where you are in your academic career. For instance, first- or second-year students have likely completed more general studies requirements, rather than major-specific classes. If your specialized courses for your major are not offered at the university you are transferring to, the credits may not transfer over and count toward your degree from that school. Typically, credits that are relevant to your major and are from an accredited college often transfer quite easily.

How To Transfer Schools

The primary academic concern for any student considering a transfer between schools should be “will my credits transfer?” The answer to this question is highly variable, so research is key. In general, transferring credits is simplest between public schools within the same state. These schools often maintain articulation agreements, which facilitate credit transfer and may even guarantee admission to students meeting specific requirements.

For example, the University of Wisconsin-Madison maintains transfer agreements with several in-state partner institutions. Additionally, the California State University System maintains a website to show students how credits earned at one state school can transfer to another.

Checking to see if the school you want to transfer to has an articulation agreement with your current school is a great first step in determining if your credits will transfer. Use online tools to search for transfer agreements.

Regardless of the relationship between schools, remember that the power to accept or reject transfer credits always lies with the credit-receiving institution. Be sure to look specifically at policies surrounding course equivalency, transfers between course levels, and transfers between quarter and semester systems.

When You Transfer Does Your Gpa Start Over

A perk of transferring colleges is that while you will transfer college credits, you wont transfer your GPA. Sure, your GPA is used to help determine your admission eligibility, but after being accepted to the new school, your GPA becomes a blank slate. What counts, in the end, is your GPA at the institution where you will ultimately graduate.

This factor makes transfer credits from community college programs particularly attractive to many students. Its no secret that community college programs allow you to complete general education courses at a reduced cost, but they also allow you to get a few difficult but required courses out of the way. For example, if you want to enter a sociology program but dread college algebra, earn your math credits in community college. As long as you get a C or better, your credits should transfer, but your GPA wont take a hit in the end. Transferring credits from community college to university programs can be a great way to help ensure that your final GPA reflects your knowledge and skills in your area of study, and not your struggles in outside fields or unrelated prerequisites.
