Early admissions includes two options: early decision and early action. While early decision and early action differ in terms of their requirements and conditions, they share similar timelines. Both plans have a deadline in November and allow you to hear back about your admissions decision in mid-December.
Some popular schools with early action deadlines of November 1 are CalTech, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Notre Dame, Stanford, University of Virginia, and Yale. Of all things, I guess this would probably be the best piece of advice I can offer. As a legal adult about to graduate from high school, I know it can be difficult to want to take direction from someone else. But, remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
Although your school counselor may not have enough hours in the day to help every single student, I guarantee that they want nothing more than to help you as much as they can. Reach out to them and other resources at your school to help answer the hard questions and help you find your path forward.
If that fails, dont be afraid to reach out to family or friends for their advice, especially if theyve gone through the college process.
Youll be amazed at how much wisdom someone can provide, even if just from their own experience. Hopefully these 5 things to know before applying to college will help your application process!
Ask Lots Of Questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions throughout the process! All gap year programs will be happy to talk about their programs, walk you through itineraries, explain the admissions process and support you through the decision process. Asking lots of questions indicates your interest and investment, so its a good thing!

Ask For Letters Of Recommendation
Whether you apply using the common app, the coalition app, or a university-specific application, you will inevitably be asked for letters of recommendation. Before you request these, be sure that you understand the requirements for them as dictated by your specific application. Some applications specify that these must be written by teachers, others request one from a teacher and one from a guidance counselor, and still others leave the decision entirely up to you.
In any case, the person who writes your recommendations should know you well enough to speak to your specific strengths and be able to provide concrete examples of these. Be Aware Of College And State Preferences
While students can file a FAFSA® for federal aid up until the practical end of an academic year, many schools and states have their own deadlines for their respective financial aid resources.
Its important for students to contact their schools financial aid offices to ensure they get all the required information to them in time. Students can consult this resource to keep track of state deadlines.
Students also need to be aware that the order in which they list schools on their FAFSA® can impact state funding. Some states require students to list state universities first in order to receive state aid. You can look up each states requirements here.
If youre not clear on what you need to do to ensure youre applying for state federal aid in addition to FAFSA®, contact a college financial aid office or your high school counselor for some guidance. When Do You Apply For Rolling Admissions
Your timeline for applying for rolling admissions depends on a few factors and may vary from student to student. Schools with rolling admissions accept applications throughout a period of time, usually ranging from the fall to the spring. For example, the application for ASU opened July 1 this year and will remain open through Spring 2022.
Since most schools with rolling admissions accept applications on a first come, first served basissometimes notifying you of admission only a few weeks after you submitit’s advisable to apply as early as possible. Sticking to an early deadline of November or regular deadline in January, even though you don’t absolutely have to, is a good guideline to follow.
Not only will setting a deadline for yourself help you keep better track of your college planning, but it will help you apply early and thereby impress admissions officers, which gives you a better chance of admission.
Some schools with rolling admission also publicize a priority deadline, meaning students who apply by that deadline have an advantage. University of Maryland’s priority deadline, for instance, is November 1. They’ll still accept applications after, but you’ll have improved chances if you apply by then.
Does Uc San Diego Offer Deferment
UC San Diego admits only for the Fall term to which the student applied. Students who would like to enroll at a later date must reapply when they are ready to attend. Rare exceptions may be made for admitted students who have received military orders to report for active duty or if you require acute medical care for up to a maximum of one year only. Requests for deferment must be made by submitting the Request for Deferment Form. Only students who accept the offer of admission may be considered for a deferment. To be eligible to request a deferment, all transcripts and test scores must have been submitted by the deadline and validated.

Youll be extremely busy your senior year, yes, but you should still try your best to keep up your extracurricular activities and hobbiesat the very least, the ones that you are most invested in and that pertain to your major or professional endeavors.
Its OK if you have to drop some activities or dont do them as often during the fall just make sure to keep them up in the spring when youre free from the demands of college application season!

This is one of those times that I just happened to get extremely lucky. I had no idea what I was going to major in when I got to college. In fact, I dont think that I really discovered my passion until some time into my sophomore year.
It just so happened that my university offered an excellent Journalism and Mass Communication program and my talents pulled me toward writing. In the end, it was a great match. But, not every student gets so lucky.
Keep in mind that almost every college has a speciality, or a program that it hangs its hat on being better at than other colleges. Even elite schools are better for some majors and worse for others. I would encourage you to narrow down your major as much as possibleeven if that just means deciding between a B.A. and a B.S.and let that guide your college search.
