How to Use Online Courses to Complete College Prerequisites

Upon entrance into college you are required to take basic college courses, also known as core classes. Such courses are designed to prepare students for the more advanced levels of classwork that lie ahead in their academic career. They also serve to ensure that students have an appropriate foundation of information in general areas so that they may succeed in higher course levels.

Can You Transfer General Education Courses

One of the best parts of general education courses is that the credits earned can be transferred very easily to any other university.

The subjects that you study as General Education courses are “general” hence it does not matter if you have taken the general education courses at Harvard or at your local community college.

You can transfer your general education credits from anywhere to anywhere because general education courses like algebra will teach you the same thing wherever you take it.

What School Subjects Do You Need In High School

While some high school subjects are required, others can be selected. Finally being given more of a choice in what a student studies can be freeing, but also overwhelming. What courses are best? It’s most important to first consider what is needed to graduate. Then, parents and teens can work together to choose subjects that not only engage their interests but also have their future plans and goals in mind.

For example, students who plan to go to college may be required to take more years of a foreign language or other classes required by the schools they are interested in. A student who is interested in pursuing a career in construction may want to take an industrial arts class.

Freshman Year: Which College Courses Should You Take

There are many ways to select a set of courses for your first year as a college student. Some universities give out a suggested list of courses, others simply give three or four options that freshman can choose from . Others still email a link to incoming students that leads to an online book of what seems like hundreds if not thousands of courses with codes like Math 102 and Social Science 53D. Some universities will walk new students through each and every step while others want students to take their own initiative to ask for help. Some simply dont have the time to sit down with every student individually. So where does that leave you? Regardless of where or what you are studying, there are a few universal rules to the freshman year courses .

School Subjects You Need To Graduate

Ideally, teens should start high school with a basic plan of the classes they will need to take in order to graduate. Every state has different requirements for obtaining a high school diploma, and each school varies greatly in what they offer to give kids a chance to fulfill them.

The school’s guidance/counseling department can help students understand the requirements for graduation and how their coursework aligns with them.

The basic requirements generally include the following:

How Does Online Community College Work

As we mentioned in the introduction, online learning is unique because of its convenience. Unlike the conventional learning in college, online class works differently because of its pattern or format. For example, nobody will fix a time for you to learn. Instead, to take your time in the learning process, do your assignment in your own time.

There is no gainsaying that online learning has increasingly become popular and acceptable as days go by, and community colleges across the globe are ever willing to offer distance learning programs nowadays. First, however, you can learn more about how these programs work and think if this learning style is suitable.

Minimum Vs Maximum Course Load

Discovering what type of student you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are can help you determine whether you need to take a maximum course load, a minimum course load, or something in between.

A maximum course load typically consists of about 15 credit hours or five classes a semester. This is an ambitious goal, especially if your classes are difficult or the homework in them is time-consuming.

A minimum course load may mean taking as little as a single class each semester. This would likely be the easiest path, but it would probably take you many years to obtain a degree when taking only one class per semester.

The great thing about college is that you can be flexible. Just because you take three semesters of heavy course loads doesnt mean you have to take a heavy course load in your fourth semester. For example, while getting your core classes out of the way, you may decide to take five classes each semester for your first year and a half.

In your fourth semester, you may have to take a class that you are absolutely dreading. Maybe its a class youve been terrified of taking ever since you saw it on your required courses on your first day of college.

If youre not in a hurry to graduate right away, you may want to take only that class in your fourth semester. You could also decide to take that class along with one or two incredibly easy electives. Either way could help you minimize your stress levels over this particular class.

How To Decide Which Courses To Take In Community College

The best place to start is with a visit to your community college advisor. While these advisors may or may not be well-versed in the ins and outs of applying for Ivy League or international schools, they can almost certainly talk to you in some detail about the requirements for gaining admission to colleges and universities within the state since that is where most students are headed. And if they are unable to provide you with any requested information, they at least have the skills and contacts to find it for you so that you don’t have to go digging on your own.

If you are looking for information on transferring from community college to university, read more about it in our Community College To Ivy League category.

That being said, it is up to you to ensure that you’re prepared for transfer since you’re the only one who will suffer if you’re not. How Important Is Your College Major

The major you choose will neither predict nor guarantee your future. Many graduates find jobs that have nothing to do with what they studied in college. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average twenty-something switches jobs once every three years and the average person changes career fields two or three times in their lifetime.

If you intend to earn a professional degree after college, you will probably need certain courses, or prerequisites , under your belt. But many future doctors major in non-science related fields.

How Many Classes You Should Take As A Junior

During your junior year, your focus should start to shift to what youre doing after college. At this point youre probably thinking youll only be halfway done, how can you think about the end already?

During your junior year, should be meeting with the careers office on campus and get their help. Theyll teach you how to write and perfect a résumé, how to interview, how to network, and theyll point you to events where you can practice these skills with the very same people who might one day be your bosses.

Along with these events, junior year is also common when college students start to do internships for college credit. Sometimes these are required by a major or minor, and sometimes they are just a really good idea highly recommended by your professors. If you are spending time away from campus to work on internships, that may take up space in your schedule you would otherwise use for a class. But theyre also giving you course credit, so you could be coming out even.

According to international teacher and writer Melissa Morgenstern, junior year is the most common time for college students to study abroad. She says, Assuming you consider all of your options, you will probably have the least trouble during your junior year in terms of academic credits, program variety, and your overall choice of destinations, but perhaps a bit more to deal with personally and emotionally.

Physical Education Or Self

In line with developing healthy habits discussed above, students should consider a recreation or physical education course. This is especially true for students who don’t have an athletic background. It’s possible that one might discover a passion or hidden talent, be it kickboxing, pilates or running.

Students can find additional benefits from taking self-defense courses, too. According to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network , 11.2 percent of all college students are sexually assaulted through force, violence or incapacitation. While no one wants to face that situation, it is helpful for students to be aware of the risk and to arm themselves with information on how to combat those odds.

Take At Least One Course That You Are Interested In

During my freshman year I took an anthropology course. I had no plans to become an anthropology major or to have a career as an anthropologist but I thought it sounded interesting. I next term I took ceramic pottery, I am a terrible potter but I thought it would help me sit down and hit the books in my mandatory courses if I could play around with clay on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. These cases counted as elective units and helped me get closer to graduation but they also helped me hold my interest in college in general and I met a lot of interesting new people to study with. If you have always been fascinated by Socrates but are majoring in pre-med, take that freshman philosophy class and enjoy the art of thinking. If you love to paint but want to be an English teacher, take the painting class and have fun being creative. College should broaden your horizons as well as prepare you for a career.
