Harvard’s Demographics And Diversity Issues

The Best Harvard University Campus Tour

According to the school’s website, Harvard is committed to diversity. Home to students from more than 100 different countries, Harvard states that it aims to register diverse individuals with different backgrounds, beliefs, and financial situations. The ethnicities of the admitted class of 2025 were broken up as follows:

But the school has come under fire for what some allege is a discriminatory admissions process. A student advocacy group called Students for Fair Admissions filed a lawsuit against the school in 2014, alleging that Harvard’s admissions process was race-based and discriminated against Asian Americans. Both the lower court and the federal appeals court that presided over the case found that the school’s practices were not discriminatory.

Drew Gilpin Faust, who was president of Harvard in 2016, created a task force to address diversity issues at the school, including gender, race, ethnicity, and sexuality. The report made a series of recommendations such as the hiring of diverse staff, improved mentoring, and departmental plans to advance inclusion.

What Is Harvard University Like

Harvard University is situated in the small city of Cambridge, Massachusetts. However, its proximity to Boston and its location on the citys subway line make it easily accessible. Like many other Ivy League schools on the east coast, Harvards campus is teeming with historical architecture and stunning green lawns. The median class sizes at Harvard are 12 students, making for a more intimate and personalized learning environment than most colleges can offer.

How Do You Know That Harvard University Is Right For You

Best Universities To Study At To Get A Job

Even if you can answer Why would someone choose Harvard University over other top universities?, that doesnt mean you necessarily know why you would choose it over other Ivy League schools.

While there are certainly some objective characteristics of a college that make it superior to others, that doesnt mean that other subjective aspects shouldnt sway your decision. After all, youre the one who will be attending the college.

No matter how good the university looks on paper, if it doesnt line up with your personal interests, goals, and strengths, then its not a good match. The reasons to love Harvard should only be taken into consideration for your personal case if you actually find them enticing.

The best way to know if Harvard University is right for you is to compare its offerings with your academic goals. If you see some synchronicity, then it might be worth considering. However, if you dont see any similarities, then all of Harvards accolades wont make a difference for you.

Why Us News Named Harvard The Best College In The World But Not In America

U.S. News is known for its national universities and liberal arts college rankings, which this year named Princeton University and Williams College as the top schools in America. Last year, U.S. News changed its methodology to emphasize “outcome-related measures” such as graduation and retention rates which now account for 30% of a school’s ranking.

As The Washington Post points out, it’s a little odd for U.S. News to have Princeton at the top of its national universities list, but only ranked 13 for global universities, while former number two Harvard tops the list. For their new ranking, U.S. News emphasized research prowess and global reputation, while omitting factors such as undergraduate admissions data and graduation rates.

“This is about faculty productivity and prestige … It is meaningful for certain things and not necessarily meaningful for other things. We get that. This is about big muscular research universities doing what research universities claim is their mission,” U.S. News Editor Brian Kelly told The Washington Post.

Here are the top 2o universities in the world, according to U.S. News & World Report:

Less Competitive Admission Requirements

Princeton, Harvard are best colleges in the US

Harvard College, the undergraduate school at Harvard University, can be difficult to get into, to say the least, much like Harvard’s graduate and professional schools. For this fall’s first-year class, Harvard received more than 57,000 applications and accepted just 1,968, or 3.4%.

Admission to the undergraduate Extension program is less stringent. Anyone can sign up for a course at any time. If you want to enroll in the degree program, however, you must take three courses, including a class on academic writing and critical reading, and earn at least a B in each.

Anyone can sign up for an undergraduate Harvard Extension course at any time. If you want to enroll in the degree program, however, you must take three courses and earn at least a B in each.

That’s it no consideration of high school transcripts or SAT and ACT scores. No essays or teacher recommendations. Three B’s and you’re in. Think you’re Harvard material? Prove it.

A 2016 Harvard Gazette article noted that 32% of those seeking entry into the undergraduate degree program earned sufficient grades for admission. While that might seem like a competitive acceptance rate, it’s more a reflection of attrition than selectivity.

What it actually reflects is the percentage of students who took three courses and met the threshold a minimum of three B’s for admission. So, in theory, the acceptance rate of those who accomplish this task is 100%.

Is Harvard University A Good School

Harvard is not only a good school it is one of the best schools in the world. In fact, some people even see Harvard as the very best university available. As we discussed earlier, its ranked 2nd in the National University ranking and 2nd out of all Ivy League schools. Although this ranking changes consistently, Harvard University is regularly featured within the top five spots, often appearing at number one.

Harvard Is Located In The Ideal Spot

Best Universities in the World 2013

While Harvards academic offerings and prestige are certainly the foundational aspects of what makes this Ivy League a choice over other institutions, the justifications dont stop there. Harvards prime location is another, more practical reason to attend. Its campus has the best of both worlds by being close enough to Boston, Massachusetts, while also having a smaller town of Cambridge nearby.

This way, students can have the accessibility and excitement of city life when they want it and the solitude and calm of town life when they need it. Students should consider this component as not all of their time will be spent on campus or inside classrooms.

If youre somewhat familiar with other Ivy League schools and their campus location, you might be thinking to yourself: Well, there are plenty of other schools with locations near big cities. While youre definitely right about that, these schools are in the cities while Harvard is near the city.

Harvard Universitys campus is technically located in Cambridge, just outside of Boston, but its connected with the Boston subway system, making it a quick and easy commute. On the other hand, UPenn and Columbia are both located in the heart of Philadelphia and NYC, respectively.

Harvard student and president and CEO of the Chris James discusses the huge need for business infrastructure and entrepreneurship development in Native American communities.

    Transcript

Jason Newton: Most Americans know, in a general sense, what a Native American Reservation is, and that groups of Native Americans were forced to move to them by the government of the United States throughout our countrys history.

Rachel Traughber: What you may not know is that many of these land tracts are among some of the most rural in the country cut off from the U.S. economy and lacking in critical infrastructure and services. That reality is one factor which has led to high-poverty and limited business development opportunities for generations of Native people.

JN: Harvard Extension School student Chris James is working to change that. A former Associate Administrator at the U.S. Small Business Administration, hes the President and CEO of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise, the largest Native American economic development organization in the United States.

RT: James has spent his life developing programs to help support the creation and growth of economic opportunity for Native Americans across the country. He joins us now to share more about his work with the National Center.

The Apparent Gaming Of College Rankings

When we first did this ranking in late 2014, we looked to the Center for World-Class Universities operated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which ranks universities around the world by academic performance.

Unfortunately, in subsequent years, the Shanghai Rankings lost credibility. The Shanghai Rankings have always been based on two types of criteria, awards for achievement and strength of research . Starting in 2015, however, the Shanghai Rankings finagled their use of these criteria, so that schools and programs previously unranked emerged from nowhere and suddenly featured prominently in the rankings.

Such concerns became especially evident in Shanghais subject area rankings, such as mathematics. For instance, two Saudi Arabian universities that had no history or tradition for excellence in mathematics and that had never appeared in a ranking of top mathematics programs worldwide suddenly appeared in the #6 and #23 positions.

An article in Science suggested an answer to this meteoric rise in Saudi mathematics: these universities offer lucrative part-time professorships to top mathematicians and scientists, in which they are required to spend just a few weeks every year on campus, but then are obligated to list the university as a secondary affiliation. These very loose affiliations are boosting the ranking of such schools and programs, even though the research that is ultimately responsible for the boost is conducted outside Saudi Arabia.

Harvard Extension School traces its origins to 1910. Despite its tradition-bound reputation, Harvard was actually a pioneer in continuing and distance education. Extension courses were offered via radio in the late 1940s and on television in the 1950s.

Not that this makes Harvard unique by any means. Similar continuing education programs exist among Ivy brethren Penn, Columbia, and Brown, while Yale offers the Eli Whitney track for nontraditional undergraduates.
