What Ap Score Is Needed For College Credit

So Which Ap Classes Should You Take

How to Send AP Scores to Colleges

The goal of taking an AP class is to get a good grade in it and also pass the AP test. Doing both of these things will show colleges that you can handle college-level material, and scoring high enough on the AP test can help you get college credit. You want to take AP classes you think you’ll do well in. However, be careful about signing up for exams based on their average scores alone.

As we saw above, some of the toughest exams have the highest passing rates, and some of the easiest exams have the lowest passing rates. This means you shouldn’t sign up for AP classes based on just their passing rates.

Do some research before signing up for an AP class and make sure it’s the right fit for you. Ask older classmates how difficult they’ve found certain AP classes. Also, think about your own academic strengths and the classes you enjoy the most. If you love math and have always been good at it, you can probably score well on an AP Calculus exam even though they’re known for being difficult.

Also be careful not to overload yourself! If you cram too many AP classes into your schedule, it will be harder to pass the exams.

One last word of advice: check out our scoring guide to see how AP scores are calculated to help you develop a target raw score to help you pass. Understanding how the exam is scored is a very important step in preparing for AP tests.

How do AP scores factor into getting credit in university?

The AP® Exams scoring system is on a scale of one to fivewith five being the best and one being the worst.

Heres a good table that breaks down the score you could get and what it means.

    AP Score

    What it means

Best. The highest score you can get on your AP® English Language Exam. This score typically guarantees college credit or placement out of a required course at colleges that accept AP® Exams.
Good. While not the highest, this is still a very good score. Youll usually get college credit with it.
Okay. Not the worst but plenty of room for improvement. This is the usual threshold for colleges to give you credit, though not at the most competitive colleges.
Bad. Not a good score at all. If you can, youll want to retake the exam, as schools will rarely ever give credit for it.
Worst. If you really want to perform well on this exam, you would probably need to do a lot of studying before taking the exam a year later.

When it comes to AP® U.S. History, youll want to aim for a score of 3 or higher. Most colleges will give you college credit if you score within that range.

NOTE: Colleges sometimes change their requirements for awarding college credit or offering placement out of required courses. So always check in with the college to make sure you have the most relevant and recent information.

On top of that, some colleges will also give you college credits . This might mean you can graduate in 3 or 3.5 years instead, maximizing your time and minimizing your tuition bill.

    How Are Ap Exams Scored

After the AP Exams are administered, schools return all paper AP Exam materials to the AP Program. Then:

    • The multiple-choice section is scored by computer. Each answer sheet is scanned and the total number of correct responses equals the multiple-choice score.
    • The free-response section and through-course performance tasks are scored at the annual AP Reading held during the first two weeks in June. Specially appointed college professors and experienced AP teachers score this section of the exam.
    • The total scores from the free-response section and the multiple-choice section are combined to form a composite score. These composite scores are then translated into the 5-point scale using statistical processes designed to ensure that, for example, a 3 this year reflects the same level of achievement as a 3 last year.

The above is true for most AP courses. However, the assessments for AP Seminar, AP Research, AP Computer Science Principles, and the three AP Art and Design courses are different. See each individual course page for details.

Additionally, well explain how–and why–the average AP scores look a little different in 2021. The Bottom Line: Do Colleges Look At Ap Scores

Colleges typically ask students to self-report their AP scores on applications. As a result, they will see any scores you choose to report .

However, taking AP classes themselves are an important way to demonstrate that you’re taking the most rigorous schedule available to youa quality that’s extremely important to selective institutions in the admissions process.

Finally, AP exam scores can sometimes get you college credit or allow you to skip prerequisite classes in college. Not all schools do this, so be sure to check with the colleges you’re applying to!
