Is Coursera Plus A Good Deal

Coursera Plus can be a great deal! It all depends upon how many courses you take.

Lets take that $399 annual number. If youre taking a specialization that costs $69 a month, and it runs 3 months long, then the specialization would cost $207.

Not quite there yet.

Take another at the same price point, and now youre looking at $414 vs. $399. So the breakeven point for specializations is around 2 specializations a year.

If you look at professional certificates, the prices can be even higher up to $89 a month for 6 months. If you take two of those, that would cost $1,068 if purchased separately. When you use Coursera Plus, thats a savings of $669.

When it comes to individual courses, its best to look at it month to month. Certified Courses are anywhere from $30-$100 each, so Coursera Plus is worth it if you take 1 a month.

Coursera Vs The Great Courses

The Great Courses is the oldest learning platform on this list, having gotten its start 30 years ago. Back then, you would purchase courses which were delivered by video. Now, you can purchase them online and watch them on your computer.

The Great Courses courses are strictly video lectures and supplemental readings. The classes are usually around 24 hours , and typically cover the material at an intro-college-course-level. Classes are typically taught by college professors, but other professionals in their fields are used from time to time.

Unlike Coursera, these courses dont provide certificates and dont have quizzes and grades. Theyre strictly informational. The closest analogue to them I can think of is History Channel documentaries. They cover the material quite well, and theyre academic in nature.

Standalone courses vary in price, but are usually in the $50-200 range.

You can purchase The Great Courses Plus their subscription service for $360 a year, giving you unlimited access to their thousands of courses.

This isnt too much less than Courseras price.

Coursera, though, is more practically-oriented than The Great Courses offering skill-based and academic classes that have certificates upon completion.

My The Great Courses Plus review dives into this platform in more detail.

Does Coursera Look Good On College Applications

FYI: Coursera is now offering certificates and specializations, which cost money. If there is some specialization you want to pursue and youre willing to pay for access to the courses, thats fine. However, these certificates and specializations are unlikely to make a difference in your college admissions process.

    How Do Coursera Specializations Work

Coursera Specializations work similarly to regular courses where you have to pass weekly units with lectures, readings, and quizzes. The units CAN be taken in succession quicker than the proposed schedule, so if you take a months worth of units in one week you can save money on the monthly payments. Once you have finished all the units of the first course, you are taken to the next courses, until finally arriving at the hands-on Specialization project. After that, you will be awarded a Coursera Specialization Certificate.

    Who Wont Like Coursera

Are Online Certificates Worth It? | HarvardX, Coursera, Stanford, edX, etc.

Coursera isnt great for learners interested in Celebrity teachers.

If youre aching to learn writing from Malcolm Gladwell, storytelling from Shonda Rhimes, or cooking from Gordon Ramsay might I suggest MasterClass? That platform is focused on having the biggest names in their respective fields teach their talents to you in a casual setting.

Coursera isnt about that. It doesnt use big names to sell you on its courses. Instead, it uses the weight of the institutions, the quality of the teaching, and the value of the certificate as its selling points. If youre looking for casual edutainment from celebrities, Coursera isnt your best bet.

Similarly, Coursera isnt great for people looking for self-help and self-improvement courses. While it is true that learning anything is great for self-improvement, Coursera courses tend to be about things like learning python or human psychology, as opposed to the self-help topics of chakra healing or how to be a better parent.

If youre looking for more soft-style self-improvement, Id suggest Mindvalley.

People who dont like online learning will also not like Coursera. It is all online. While Coursera replicates the collegiate experience more closely than platforms like MasterClass, it still is an online course and needs to be understood as such.

Are Coursera Degrees Worth The Price

Yes Coursera degrees offer significantly better value than traditional college degrees, and you can expect to save at least 50% to 75% on overall expenses by choosing to learn online. When compared to other online degrees, Courseras degrees are priced fairly and the price ranges are very similar to competitors such as edX.

If you want to take multiple courses because you have career goals that require you to learn across several subject areas, or youre just passionate about learning for personal development, then Coursera Plus will definitely be worth it.

However, If you want to just take a single course on a subject youre interested in, Coursera Plus wont be for you.

    How Does Coursera Pricing Work

There are thousands of free courses you can take on Coursera no credit card required. Youll have access to an astonishing amount of material that you can work through at your own pace without having to pay anything at all.

However, if you want a qualification at the end, you will need to pay a fee. The pricing structure is a bit confusing, but there are several options you can choose from as youre considering the best path for you.

If you only want to take one course, the most affordable and logical option will be for you to pay for an individual course certificate. These cost anywhere between $49 and $99 and require just a single one-time payment.

You can also pay for a specialization certificate or a professional certificate. These normally are offered on a subscription basis, usually running between $39 and $79 per month.

Another option is a MasterTrack certificate. This is where youll really see the costs start to climb. A MasterTrack certificate normally costs around $2000, while a full degree can cost $15,000 or more.

While that latter cost seems steep, remember that to pursue a degree in the traditional fashion youre going to be paying that at least once per term.

You can earn certifications by taking courses from all kinds of universities, companies, and firms. Coursera Plus is new for 2020 and will allow you to access more than 3000 courses for the price of an annual subscription fee this fee is normally right around $399.

Coursera Courses Approved For College Credit

Coursera, which offers massive online open courses, also known as MOOCs, is one of several efforts to bring higher education online. It now has a lineup of more than 200 classes, organized and taught by professors at 33 universities.

The ACE, a higher education organization, certified “Pre-Calculus” and “Algebra,” both offered by The University of California, Irvine “Introduction to Genetics and Evolution” and “Bioelectricity: A Quantitative Approach,” both offered by Duke University and “Calculus: A Single Variable,” offered by University of Pennsylvania. Four of these are for college credit the fifth, Algebra, is a developmental math class for vocational schools.

Coursera noted that more than 2,000 universities and colleges consider ACE recommended-courses for credit. But schools do not have to give credit for such classes. Even the schools that are offering the classes say they don’t plan to give students credit for taking them. Officials at Duke, Penn and UC-Irvine told The Wall Street Journal they have no plans to offer formal credit for these classes.

The five classes certified by ACE are the only Coursera courses that currently offer Signature Track. Later in February, two more classes will become part of Signature Track.

The certification announcement is a bit of good news for Coursera, which earlier this week had to pull a course offline, due to technical and other issues.
