Start Paying Off Your Loans Now

If youre like the average student , youve probably got several thousand dollars in student loans sitting around, just waiting for you to graduate.

Well, why not start putting a dent in that loan pile right now?

When the Fall 2012 semester started, I made the decision to start paying off my loans while I was still in school. In fact, I made it my goal to pay off all of my loans before they come due . So far, Ive been able to pay off over $4,500! Im going to keep going every month until its gone, and you can even track my progress in the Professional Goals section of my Impossible List.

Now, you might be saying something like:

I cant pay off those loans now! Theres like $56,000 dollars there, and I make almost no money! YOUR ADVICE MAKES ME WANT TO POOP ON A CHICKEN

First off, think about the rights of the chicken. Secondly, dont think of your debt load as a towering $56,000 monster that you cant take on until youre working at Google.

Instead, think of it as a bucket of sand. There may be a lot of sand there, and you may have a small shovel right now, but that doesnt mean you can start scooping some out so theres less of it to take care of later.

Think of your student debt as a bucket of sand: no matter the size, you can start scooping away now.Tweet This

Youll thank yourself when you graduate!

Starting College In The Spring Semester

Things are a bit less hectic for students wishing to start college in the spring semester. As students will already be on campus from the fall semester, dont expect there to be any kind of freshman welcoming if you choose to start in the spring.

Start Taking Your Health Seriously

Youre never going to be any younger than you are right now, and as you age, you wont be able to get away with living an unhealthy lifestyle as easily as you could before. Now is the time to start taking your health seriously.

  • Pay more attention to your nutrition. Making food may seem like a pain in the ass and a waste of time, but youre giving yourself more time overall by making the good stuff.
  • Move more. If you think about it, most of us dont move much at all we sit in class, we sit on the bus, we sit at home. In college, we have to walk to classes a lot but you should be building more moving habits on top of that. Youll need them when you graduate and no longer have to do all that walking.
  • Try to get a good amount of sleep. If homework is taking over your sleep time, learn to do it more efficiently by cutting out distractions. Check out this finals studying guide for tips on this subject it may be about studying for finals, but a lot of the advice will help year-round.

Coincidentally, my favorite health blogger Mark Sisson wrote his own post on things you can do to start your year off right. All of his tips are health-based, so Id recommend taking a look at them.

Take Care Of Textbook Duties Early

Fall 2023 Application Timeline – Important Dates you MUST know || Yash Mittra

Theres nothing worse than showing up to the first week of a class that turns out to absolutely require the textbook and not have it yet.

Thats why you should take steps now to get your textbook duties taken care of now before you have to show up to class. Heres a list of things you should do now to prepare:

  • Use whatever tools your university offers to figure out what textbooks are required for each of your classes next semester.
  • For each class that requires a textbook, you can email the professor to find out if the textbook is actually going to be used and determine whether or not you can buy an old edition and still be fine. This can save you a lot of money in the long run.
  • When you know what textbooks you actually need, buy them. Even if youre not close to your campus bookstore, affordable textbooks are available at a lot of websites. In fact, you can probably find used editions for a lot less money.

One last tip check to see if there are Kindle editions of any textbooks you need. Kindle textbooks dont actually work on the regular Kindle devices but they will work on the free Kindle apps for Mac and PC. This lets you get a textbook thats most likely cheaper and has the added benefit of not adding weight to your backpack. Most Kindle textbooks are even rentable, which means theyll just expire at the end of the semester .

How Can My Student Ensure A Smooth Transition

Its becoming more common for students to enter college mid-year but it will still take extra effort on your students part to assimilate into the already established student population. Encourage them to:

  • Explore opportunities to get involved in campus groups and activities .
  • Make an effort to get to know people in the residence hall and in the classroom . They can start with their roommate, who might also be a mid-year student or if the roommate has been there for a semester, theyll be able to introduce your student to people.
  • Participate actively in class and go to professors office hours .
  • Starting college mid-year doesnt have to be a disadvantage. It may not appeal to all students but its an increasingly popular option for many. By helping your student anticipate the challenges and take advantage of the benefits, they should be able to transition into college smoothly.

Join A New Club Or Sport

If youve been in college for a while now, your life may have slipped into a sort of routine at this point. Wake up, eat , go to class, go to work, come home, study, chill with friends. Its familiar. Its not too hard, and youre working towards your goals. Thats fine.

But its not exciting anymore, is it? All the wonder and excitement you experienced as a freshman has all but passed at least, thats how it was for me. Things kind of just slipped into a routine that I didnt feel like breaking out of.

Well, for the new year, I say to break out of it. Try something new, just like you did when you were a freshman. Try joining a new club or trying a new sport. You can get your friends involved too if you want they probably need a change as well. Instead of just coming home every day and grabbing your Xbox controller, try getting out and doing something.

Right after this last semester ended, my girlfriend and I decided to try out ice skating. I thought I would suck, but Im actually not bad! Were planning on joining the club for it next semester, and its going to be a lot more fun than just sitting around every night.

There are probably 100 different things your campus offers that you could try out just jump into one and see how it is! While youre sitting at home on break, you can take some time to browse your schools website for available clubs and events theres most likely a listing.

    How Will Entering College Mid

The idea of beginning college after almost everyone else has already been there for a semester is unsettling to many students. By anticipating the challenges, your student will be better prepared to meet them.

Its especially important for students who start mid-year to take advantage of academic advising for the following reasons:

    • They may face difficulties registering for classes since students who entered in the fall already registered in November for spring classes. There might not be as many class options available, especially for entry-level courses.
    • Entering mid-year may mean your student is behind in their credits. If they want to graduate with the class that began in the fall, it may require taking classes in the summer or during winter break to catch up.

Why Is The Spring Semester Ideal For You

Though most of the international students prefer fall more than the spring semester, it cannot be said that it isnât ideal for you. Despite of the fact that most of the undergraduate students complete their graduation around June and July, very little time do they actually get to gear up for the next course and take up admission in the fall intake. Thatâs when spring semester comes as an alternative!

Owing to other commitments that the students have to fulfil right after completing their graduation such as jobs, internships, taking up a new vocational courses or simply a career break, spring term admission becomes the most ideal gateway to pursuing a post-graduation course.

If your applications and other documentations are not ready by the fall semester, no need to hurry. Just start preparing more rigorously for entrance exams like GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, etc. You have got ample time before the spring semester begins!

    When Does The 2021

Colleges generally go back to school in January, but the exact date varies. For example, some colleges return as early as Jan. 3, 2022, while others start as late as Jan. 26, 2022.

Classes start Jan. 26 at William & Mary, while New York University goes back Jan. 24. University of Massachusetts Amherst offers a Jan. 25 start date for spring semester, while the University of Michigan starts Jan. 5.

Why do schools offer such drastically different start dates? Many schools on the semester system offer a winter term or January term that pushes back the spring start date. NYU, for example, offers a January term from Jan. 3-21, while winter term runs from Dec. 17-Jan. 24 at UMass Amherst.

Semester schools also tend to have a later start date than schools that use the quarter system. Most of the University of California schools and the University of Washington return for winter quarter on Jan. 3.
