Former Students Sue Hondros College And Its Ceo Over Nursing School Accreditation Problems

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two former students have filed a lawsuit against Hondros College saying officials at the private, for-profit school misled them when they told students that the associate’s degree nursing program at the Independence campus would likely become accredited.

Accreditation of a nursing program signifies that it has met a rigorous set of academic standards. Many employers only hire graduates of accredited programs and many advanced-degree nursing programs wont accept students unless their previous degrees are from accredited programs.

The suit was filed Monday, Nov. 18, in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court by Tabatha Vickery of Mantua and Bryan Lynn of Twinsburg who withdrew from LPN courses at the Independence campus after hearing that the program would not gain accreditation.

The two students had planned to continue in Hondros associates degree program after completing their LPN coursework.

The suit accuses the college and John Hondros, chairman of its board, of fraud, breach of implied contract and violating the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act.

The students are asking for a jury trial in the suit, which contends that school officials used likely accreditation of the associates degree nursing program to induce students to enroll or to remain enrolled and to pay substantial sums in tuition, fees and other costs. The students, the suit says, paid $19,861 for the LPN program, not including books, supplies and uniforms.

Former Nursing Students File Class-Action Lawsuit Against Hondros College and its CEO Allege College Defrauded Students Over Program Accreditation

Complaint alleges that the private nursing school misrepresented the likelihood that its RN program would receive accreditation, and breached an implied agreement with students when it preemptively withdrew its candidacy for accreditation

CLEVELAND, OHIO – Today, two former nursing students at the Independence, Ohio campus of Hondros College, Tabatha Vickery of Mantua, Ohio and Bryan Lynn of Twinsburg, Ohio, filed a class-action lawsuit against the College, alleging that its Chief Executive Officer and other staff members actively recruited new students for its LPN and RN programs, and encouraged current students to continue their enrollment in the programs, while concealing information the College knew would likely result in a denial of accreditation by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission , now known as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing .

The suit, captioned Vickery et al. v. Hondros College, Inc. et al., Case No. CV 13 817299, was filed in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas and is assigned to Judge Joan Synenberg.
