$1400 Stimulus Checks: Are College Students Eligible

College students hope to get stimulus checks

Working and unemployed adults and parents are surely eligible for the direct payments, but can college students also get their hands on the cash? Heres the short answer: It depends.

In a mammoth effort to provide much-needed cash to millions of financially struggling Americans, the Internal Revenue Service has already sent out roughly hundred thirty million coronavirus relief checks under President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan.

Working and unemployed adults and parents are surely eligible for the direct payments, but can college students also get their hands on the cash?

Heres the short answer: It depends.

If you are a dependent college studentmeaning someone, like your parents, claims you on their income tax return, the individual who claims you can get up to a one-time $1,400 stimulus check. Then it would be up to the parent to decide whether or not to pass on those funds to you.

However, if you are deemed financially independentmeaning that you are able to provide more than half of your own financial supportyou may indeed be eligible for that third stimulus check.

Like the rest of the adult population, keep in mind that there are income thresholds to meet in order to qualify for direct payment.

Individuals who earn as much as $75,000 in adjusted gross income , or couples making $150,000in addition to their children or adult dependentsqualify for the full $1,400 per individual.

College Students Eligible For Upcoming $1400 Stimulus Checks

President Bidens COVID-19 stimulus bill, known as the American Rescue Plan, passed in the Senate on Saturday and is headed to the House for a final vote. The plan expands eligibility for stimulus checks to adult dependents including college students.

Houston Baylor Law student Jordan Dobbs said while she believes the previous stimulus packages should have included greater support for adult dependents, she is pleased to see Congress acknowledge adult dependents in the upcoming relief package.

I think dependents and college students should have been factored in way earlier than they are now, Dobbs said. Last summer, that was hard for me because my dad did lose his job from the pandemic, so I couldnt rely on him to help me out when I was short, and I didnt have a job, so it was difficult.

Experts estimate that around 13.5 million college students will be eligible for the $1,400 stimulus payments as adult dependents. However, the IRS will distribute the payments to the taxpayer, not the dependents. For most Baylor students, that will mean the payments will be sent to their parents.

The bill also includes $1,400 stimulus payments for individuals making up to $75,000 and couples making up to $150,000.

In the past, Dobbs used stimulus checks to pay for her LSAT and law school applications. Dobbs said she and her sister already have a plan for their anticipated $1,400 stimulus checks.

The House plans to vote on the bill Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

How College Students Are Affected By Next Round Of Stimulus Checks

  • Mikaela Cohen | Business Reporter

Unlike the last two rounds of stimulus checks, many college students now qualify to receive aid through the newest coronavirus relief package passed by the U.S. Senate on March 6.

Totaling $1.9 trillion, the American Rescue Plan is the third coronavirus relief package passed by Congress since the beginning of the pandemic.

The newest package is expected to be approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 9, and then signed into law by President Joe Biden by the end of the week, according to an article in CNBC.

Based on tax filing status, individuals who made $75,000 or less in one year and couples filing jointly who made less than $150,000 in one year qualify to receive the full direct payment of $1,400, according to an article in CNBC. Single filers making more than $75,000 but less than $80,000 and couples making more than $150,000 but less than $160,000 will receive partial payments, but those above the upper income thresholds will not receive a stimulus check.

This is an increase from the December coronavirus relief package that gave a maximum payment of $600 to individuals who made less than $75,000 and a maximum payment of $1,200 to couples filing jointly who made less than $150,000, according to an article in CNBC.

College students can claim the stimulus payment in the form of recovery rebate credit if the student has not been claimed as a dependent.

Why $1400 Checks And Not $2000

Biden’s plan called for $1,400 checks for most Americans, which on top of the $600 provided in the Dec. 2020 relief plan would bring the total to the $2,000 that Biden called for.

Stimulus Check For University Students

After the delay to announcing the relief package that should help individuals, families and businesses struggling to deal with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, we appear to now be just days away. Of course, the initial sharing of the Republican plans is only the next step in it being negotiated and then signed into law.

We already know, or have a good idea, what will be included in the package, but despite the insistence of several members of Congress to include university students in this second round of payments, the reality is believed to be that they will not be.

The stimulus package includes $40 billion of financial aid for colleges and universities. Through an extension of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund through September 2023, Congress particularly wants to help colleges and universities who are struggling financially or that dont have large endowments. The good news for college students is that colleges must spend at least half of the funds on emergency, need-based financial aid for students. This could include student loans, scholarships and grants, for example, to help students with tuition and housing.

To The Maximum Extent Possible Treasury Should Make The Payments Automatically Without Requiring Burdensome Filing

After early indications that the Trump Administration would issue payments contingent on tax filing from certain groups who normally dont file including many Social Security, railroad retirement, and SSI beneficiaries, and recipients of certain veterans benefits Treasury clarified that it will use its authority to provide the stimulus payments automatically to these groups. Congress should mandate a continuation of this practice in subsequent rounds of stimulus payments.

In addition, the mechanisms for providing the stimulus payments to people eligible for them can be further improved. We recommend:

How To Make Sure Eligible Dependents Get The Stimulus

For adult dependents to qualify, the person claiming them on their tax return must meet the same income threshold as everyone else: $1,400 payments for individuals with an adjusted gross income of up to $75,000, heads of household with income up to $112,500, and $150,000 for joint filers.

After that threshold, the payments will be reduced until a max income limit of: $80,000 for single filers, $120,000 for heads of household, and $160,000 for married couples. No one with income above those caps will receive money in this round of stimulus payments.

Your income is determined by your most recent tax return 2019 if the IRS has not yet processed your 2020 return.

Anyone who qualifies for a stimulus check themselves will also receive the same amount for any dependents they claimed on their most recent return . If you qualify for less than the full stimulus amount, thats the amount your dependents will also receive. The additional stimulus will be paid to the tax filer, not the dependent themselves.

If you are a college student or adult who was claimed by a parent or someone else as a dependent on their most recent tax return, your stimulus will be included in their payment. So youll want to make sure you are clear with your parents or anyone else who mightve claimed you, whether or not they did, and what that means for your payment.

Can I Get a $500 Stimulus Check for My College Student?

As part of the relief bill, parents will receive up to $3,600 a year per child through the child tax credit. Though there is support to make this credit permanent, this new provision is set to last only a year.

Hopefully its going to keep some people afloat in terms of being able to continue their education and not have to stop out, says Douglas Webber, associate professor of economics at Temple University. Once you stop out its just so hard to come back.

Lawmakers intend to distribute the sum through monthly checks starting in July. With this arrangement, parents will receive $300 per child for children below age 6 and $250 per month for children between 6 and 17. The remaining credit will pay out after you file taxes.

Unlike with the previous child tax credit, this one is fully refundable. That means even families without a tax obligation will qualify. But payments will phase out for those with a reported income of more than $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for head of household and $150,000 for joint filers.

Like other measures in the relief bill, payments are based on your most recent tax return 2019 or 2020.

Cares Act Rebates A Marked Improvement Over 2008 Stimulus Payments

The CARES Act includes recovery rebates of $1,200 per adult and $500 per dependent child aged 16 or younger. A married couple with two children is therefore eligible for a $3,400 payment. The rebates phase down gradually for married couples with incomes above $150,000, heads of household with incomes above $112,500, and individuals with incomes above $75,000. . The rebates are larger than the 2008 stimulus payments of $600 for a single filer, $1,200 for a married couple, and an extra $300 per child .

Unlike the 2008 payments, households dont need a minimum level of income or earnings to qualify. An earlier proposal from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would have provided only a partial rebate to nearly 70 million households with incomes below about $50,000 and would have left out roughly 9 million very low-income households entirely. That proposal met swift bipartisan opposition, however, including from Republican Senators Mitt Romney and Josh Hawley, as well as from many Democrats, and these restrictions on low- and modest-income households were dropped during subsequent negotiations on the legislation.

“If you haven’t you need to file one, or you can go to IRS.GOV, ‘Where’s my Stimulus Check?’, and look on there and enter your information and that may be able to help you, but filing a tax return will help and if you don’t have any taxable income you can still file a tax return electronically, and that’s the best way to get one soon,” said John Empson, a Certified Public Accountant.

What Students Need To Know About The Stimulus Package

On Thursday, March 11, 2021, President Biden signed into law the $1.9 trillion economic relief package, known as the American Rescue Plan. This new stimulus package includes direct payments to individuals and families, extensions to unemployment benefits, financial support for college and universities, and tax breaks for low-income families. Here is what you need to know about the stimulus package.

The American Rescue Plan Allows Adult Dependents To Get Stimulus Checks For The First Time And Some May Even Be Able To Receive Retroactive Payments For Previous Rounds

Talks in Congress are progressing as lawmakers attempt to get President Joe Bidens covid-19 relief bill passed in the coming days. The bill, known as the American Rescue Plan, includes $1.9 trillion worth of federal funding and is designed at supporting those who are worst-hit by the pandemic.

As such much of the package focuses on providing immediate financial relief, through the form of unemployment benefits and stimulus checks. The latter was a prominent feature of previous bills and Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to a round of $1,400 payments.

However it seems that the eligibility requirements may well be different for this wave of payments, with Biden looking to open them up to more Americans. For the first time, adult dependents will be able to receive the stimulus checks, broadening eligibility to an estimated 13.5 millioncollege students.

Democrats are still working: last night the House Ways and Means committee advanced its portion of Biden’s coronavirus relief bill, passing $940 billion that covers $1,400 stimulus checks and an expansion of the child tax credit.

    Cares Act And College Students

Under the CARES Act, a college student does not have to be currently enrolled to qualify. It is only necessary to be an adult taxpayer. Also, if you havent recently paid taxes dont fret qualifying as a taxpayer only means that you are not being claimed in another persons tax return.

If you are responsible for more than half of your own support and you cant be claimed as a dependent. Therefore, you qualify.

Many university-age college students fit this profile but are still unaware that they qualified for the first stimulus check and, indeed, the latest stimulus payment.
