It Takes More Than Just Talent To Be Recruited To Play College Baseball
Now heres something else to think about and it gets back to the original question of what big scholarship did your son get. Those players in the game who go on to play in college arent necessarily the best players on the field.
The ones who are playing in college fall into two groups. The first group consists of those who were considered top 100 blue chip prospects and have been on the coaches radars since ninth grade. Nice group to be in but most players are in the second group. This group is made up of players who figured out how to get themselves recruited, sometimes without a single coach showing up to watch them at a game.
Its not just about talent.
In fact, its a lot like baseball itself. Everyone knows a few players who get away without having to work hard just because they are so talented . And then there are the players who get playing time because they always hustle even when other players on the team are just going through the motions.
If your son wants to play at the college level, he cant just go through the motions waiting for someone to notice.

Which Positions Receive The Most Athletic Scholarships
For college baseball, there is a maximum of 11.7 scholarships offered per Division 1 team, 9 per Division 2 team, 12 per NAIA team and 24 per junior college team. Baseball is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can be awarded to athletes. With that said, most scholarship money goes to pitchers and after that, the best athletes are prioritizedtypically meaning up-the-middle players like shortstops, center fielders and catchers. Players with elite skills like hitting and speed will also get more offers. Additionally, it can be a big boost to be a left-handed player, whether its a pitcher or hitter. On the flip side, corner outfielders and second basemen will receive the fewest scholarship offers.

Communicate as best you can to get a coachs attention-and include links to your online skills video and info. Ask them if they will be at certain events and go where they will be. Dont send coaches video cds.

Attending baseball camps and clinics can help you as a baseball recruit in two ways. First, they can help you better develop your skills or improve your technique, as a hitter, pitcher, or fielder. And secondly, baseball camps and clinics are great places to raise your recruiting profile. Coaches can see what you have to offer and you get the time to get to know the coaches and players who run the camp. And, if a camp or clinic is being held by a school thats on your target list, you can also take the opportunity to check out the athletic facilities, tour the campus, and get a feel for the local community.

In order to make this dream a reality, you need to not only be a great player but also take important steps to get recruited. These steps include creating a recruiting profile and getting strong grades.
Each NCAA division I college baseball program can only allocate 11.7 baseball scholarships per program. Most college baseball coaches award partial or equivalency grants in aid, and it is very rare to be offered a full-ride scholarship. The NCAA has mandated a roster limit of 35 players, and each baseball scholarship player must receive the equivalent of no less than 25% of the value of a full-ride scholarship.

Recruiting Guidelines By Position What College Coaches Look For
Catcher, Pitcher, Short Stop, 2nd Base, Center Field are usually occupied by the teams best athletes. When recruiters and scouts come to a game they usually look up the center of the field unless they come to see a specific player who may be on the corners.
Recruiting is not necessarily about game performance. Many will just watch the pregame warm up where they are guaranteed to see the player make a play. He watches the fluidity, the softness of the hands, the footwork, velocity which the player throws and his accuracy. If a coach want to see a whole game they will be looking for ATTITUDE and HUSTLE that leads by example and be motivated to play at his ability level.

Wheaton College baseball coach Eric Podbelski talks about his baseball program, his recruiting efforts and his success building one of the Top Division III programs in the area.
The Wheaton baseball program was started in 1996 and since then hasnt looked back. In a few short years Podbelski built Wheatons program into on of the top programs in the country, compiling a record of 55-221-5, one of the highest winning percentages among active NCAA D3 coaches. In 2015, Wheaton won its 16th NEWMAC regular season title. In 2017, Wheaton took its third trip to the NCAA D3 Championship.
How many States do you actively recruit in?We cover most of the six New England States, but focus in on some key regions within those States. There is a great deal of talent in Massachusetts alone as well as Connecticut where baseball is very popular at the high school level. We also do a lot of recruiting in the Southern Maine area where we feel the baseball talent there is actually under-recruited. Vermont is a little difficult because of the shorter season and spread out area. We have also expanded our efforts into New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, but I think we are going to slowly cut back our area so we can see less kids more often, instead of traveling a greater distance and maybe seeing a kid play one time.
We also attend an invitation-only Stanford Baseball Camp for one week to evaluate over 200 players.

Part of making your own recruiting pitch is to take an honest assessment of your baseball abilities and physical attributes to determine where youll fit in best. If youre not sure, ask your coach about where you stand now, and where you might be in a year or two. High school phenoms are discovered off the beaten path all the time, but if you want to be recruited by a certain school, youll likely need the ability and the physical attributes that program looks for. Dont be discouraged if you dont fit at a particular school and, instead, focus your efforts on earning a spot on a team where you do fit.

Make A Recruiting Video
Given the ratio of college baseball coaches to high school players, its important to have a recruiting video to send to coaches and on your recruiting profile. While your recruiting video shouldnt be a career retrospective dating back to Little League, it should show coaches what you have to offer. Rather than highlights, focus your video on demonstrating your mechanics, speed, athleticism, power, and body language, at the plate, on the mound, and in the field. Remember to keep your video to five minutes or less, start it with your best clips, and aim to pique a coachs interest so theyll want to see more.
