Labeling video games as sports is a controversial topic. Proponents argue that esports are a fast-growing “non-traditional sport” which requires “careful planning, precise timing, and skillful execution”. After a series of reforms in Russian sports, it was classified as a sport again on 12 March 2004. How Many Scholarships Are We Talking About
While I was at the U.S. Department of Education, I co-wrote a blog post highlighting the rapid growth of esports at the collegiate level. Robert Morris University had been the first university to offer esports scholarships way back in 2014. By the time I sat down to write our post with my colleague, Dr. Elizabeth Newbury, it was 2017 and more than 35 colleges and universities were already offering this type of student incentive to players.
From one institution to 35-plus in three years is fairly rapid growth in the world of higher education. What has happened in the 18 months since I wrote that blog post? There are now over 115 colleges and universities offering scholarships. Several of these colleges actively market esports scholarship opportunities to high school students and recruit high skill, high school esports players directly from tournaments.
Even more astonishing is that the 115-plus number is misleadingly low in terms of esports money entering the academic system. Some universities participate in league-wide scholarship tournaments, like the Georgia Esports League, comprised of varsity college teams from around the state.

“We’re playing soccer with cars and it’s just on a screen,” Goodwin says. “There isn’t a big difference between the two except that one requires actual physical activity.”
In some cases, the decision of high schools to begin offering competitive esports leagues as a school sponsored extracurricular has been enough to change parents’ minds.
Scooter Norton’s mother, Cynthia Perera says that while she and her husband always supported their children’s athletics without question, esports were a source of conflict.
She pushed to limit Norton’s time spent playing and still monitors it which led to many fights.
But since the Virginia High School League decided to offer this year’s esports pilot she says her perspective has changed substantially.

“It makes a difference not just for the parents but also for the kids,” says Perera. “It’s something they’re aiming for. There’s goals here for school pride.”
And Norton says he’s noticed a difference too.
Before, says Norton, they were playing to improve, but not with a set goal in mind. Now, with the league, their practices are more targeted and their goals are clear.

What Us Colleges Are Offering Esports Scholarships
The number of schools with varsity and club esports teams is growing by the day. Varsity programs award esports scholarships to academically eligible gamers who impress during open try-outs and win roster spots. At the club level, teams and individual students can earn scholarships by winning official collegiate tournaments. While gaming clubs offer no formalized recruiting process, veteran players and faculty advisors hold internal tryouts and practice sessions to determine the A Team roster. Currently, 96 NACE member schools offer varsity programs, while 279 colleges have Tespa chapters at the club level.
Inclusion Is Good For Students And The Community
Gaming can be an isolating pastime. When students can join a school esports team, it becomes a social experience. Without a school esports club, passionate gamers often feel left out of mainstream school social life. Organized esports bring these kids into the fold. It can help them become accepted and respected members of their school community.
The feelings of acceptance gained through joining school activities like esports safeguard students physical as well as mental health. For one thing, strong social connections boost immune function. Conversely, those who feel excluded sleep more poorly. This can take a toll on student health, leading to more missed school and negative academic outcomes.
The sense of inclusion gained through participation in esports at school can have far-reaching benefits. We know that kids who are involved in school activities are more successful across the board. This involvement can benefit the community at large. When kids feel included and good about themselves, theyre less likely to seek attention through provocative behavior and aggression. In 2016, the NACC became the University League of Legends Campus Series, run by CSL, after IvyLoL and NACL stopped functioning and many of their staff were hired as Riot Games employees to orchestrate their collegiate activities. By bringing gamers out of their bedrooms and into after-school clubs, educators say, theyre able to promote a collaborative environment. Its all about creativity and collaboration, says Ron Pirayoff, director of secondary education for Saddleback Valley USD. Those are tenets that were trying to support every day in all of our subject areas. I look at esports as a vehicle for engaging kids. Its really been a way for us to reach a different population.
Fresno USDs Duncan High doesnt have traditional sports, but the esports program allows students to represent their school and compete against their peers across the city. We won our scrimmage against one of the biggest schools in Fresno, and our students were just on fire, says Uvaldo Garcia, a history teacher at the school and the esports club adviser.
Garcia says the club helps build social skills, especially for kids who feel left out. This is a good place for students who wont fit in on a lacrosse or football team, he says. Im excited to have students who maybe wouldnt fit in anywhere else, and they come here and find what theyre looking for. I was never the athletic type myself. For me, it just seems natural to have students come in and do what they love doing.

How Us Colleges Are Using Scholarships To Field Esports Teams
US and Canadian colleges are currently fielding teams and giving esports scholarships and participation grants to gamers who play League of Legends and many other major esports titles. As programs partner with sponsors and win tournaments, they grow their funds for larger scholarships and cutting-edge arenas. Schools compete for prize money at tournaments around the year and use the winnings to award additional esports scholarships to current and future team members.
Varsity esports programs generally field teams of 14-16 players, which provides enough personnel for an A Team and a B Team. One difference unique to college esportscoaches can be current students and are sometimes included in the scholarship count.

University Of North Texas
It is home to 3 esports programs in Overwatch, League of Legends, and Rocket League. During the Spring 2021 Season of Rocket League, their team placed 3rd. Also, like Ohio State, the University of North Texas made it into the top 16 for Overwatch this year. Currently, the school does not offer any official esports scholarships but does give out scholarships to players based on their performance in tournaments.
UNTs campus flaunts an esports facility which was a $200,000 project in cooperation with the schools media library and is open to all students. While not many occupational programs, UNT engages with community events. The next big event is a Dorm Clash in which freshmen dorm teams will compete in a Rocket League tournament. With that being said, North Texas is our number 15.
Monetary Benefits From Esports
Everything comes down to the bottom line, and esports is becoming a BIG business. A billion dollars kind of big. Esports is projected to grow to a $1.65 billion business by 2021 and some expect esports to find its way into the Olympics, which would only further its popularity and reach.Like other professional sports, there are advertising and endorsement dollars. At the collegiate level, there are scholarship dollars to help recruiting efforts to entice up and coming players.
Esports isnt the next big thing, its the current big thing.

Bursting The Esports Career Bubble
Despite the growing interest and push by students, questions about how to best serve these students academically and professionally and how to make these programs legitimate are all key to integrating esports on campus.
Esports at the competitive level is high-risk, high-reward, and like traditional sports, very few players will achieve fame and fortune. Over the course of my interviews, I noticed a pattern in the responses from students and professors alike — colleges should address the risky nature of esports by creating academic programming to support other specializations, like marketing, journalism, livestream and video production, and other related skills to help improve student success.
I don’t think if you want to be a player, a collegiate program , unless you’re going to a specific school that is competing in Tier 2 scenes, like academy scenes with already established organizations, Peterson said. If you want to use a college esports program to get into esports, the best thing to do for job security is to go into production. It gives you all the viewpoints, to an extent.
Many other specializations tied to esports can prepare students for the world of work. This tactic also allows professors and staff to convince more cautious administrators and develop pathways into esports that will ultimately help universities stay relevant.
