The University of Tennessee College of Law ranks 29th among public institutions, according to rankings released today by U.S. News and World Report.
Overall, the College of Law rose four points to 56th among law schools throughout the country. The Legal Clinic, which is the oldest continuously operating clinic of its kind in the country, is ranked 20th overall and 10th among public institutions.
College of Law Interim Dean Doug Blaze said he is pleased to see the schools accomplishments recognized in this way.
Our rise in the U.S. News rankings is a tribute to the extraordinary lengths our faculty and staff undertake each day, Blaze said. Rankings absolutely do not define the work we do, but seeing our gains in admissions and bar passage affirms us in our efforts to deliver an affordable and excellent education to our students.
This overall ranking, the highest the College of Law has received in the past five years, is most affected by admission acceptance rates, graduate employment and bar passage.
Eighty-six percent of 2020 graduates were employed 10 months after graduation in long-term, full-time jobs where a J.D. degree was an advantage or bar passage was required. Graduates of the same class passed the bar at a rate of 90%, the highest in eight years.
The College of Law also ranked sixth among law schools in Fall 2021 for providing a best value legal education, this according toPreLaw magazine,a publication ofThe National Jurist.

How The Best Law Schools In The Us Get Ranked
So how exactly does U.S. News rank the law schools? According to their published methodology, the rankings are based on several factors:
- Quality assessment
- Employment success
- Faculty, law school, and library resources
A number of these factors, such as quality assessment, are difficult for schools to change because they are based on things that are not truly under a schools control. Quality assessment, for example, is primarily based on how other law schools, lawyers, and judges view the quality of the school. A law school admissions committee cant do much to change what a lawyer who graduated in 1995 thinks about the school.
Thats why law schools focus their attention on the selectivity factor when it comes to improving their U.S. News ranking. This factor is based on the entering classs median LSAT , median undergrad GPA, and the schools acceptance rate. These factors are easier for a law school to control. Every year schools will try to increase their LSAT and GPA medians by trying to attract applicants with stronger LSATs and GPAs and will regularly offer scholarships to high-scoring applicants.

U.S. News does not publicly disclose its full rankings formula. Available data shows a slight decline from last year in Harvards peer assessment among legal academics and a slight dip in its graduate employment rate.
Is Harvard worse of a school today than it was yesterday? Of course not, said law school consultant Mike Spivey. But Harvard will be the buzz.
U.S. News started ranking American Bar Association-accredited law schools in 1990, which was the only other year that Harvard landed outside the top 3.
