ECU houses and manages the UNC Coastal Studies Institute which is an inter-university, marine research institute located on Roanoke Island in Manteo along the Croatan Sound on the Outer Banks, established in 2003 focusing on Estuarine Ecology and Human Health, Coastal Processes and Engineering, Public Policy and Coastal Sustainability, and Maritime Heritage.

Colonial Period And Revolutionary War

After the Spanish in the 16th century, the first permanent European settlers of North Carolina were English colonists who migrated south from . The latter had grown rapidly and land was less available. was documented as one of the first of these Virginian migrants. He settled south of the and east of the in 1655.
