What Is The Origin Of Summer Vacation

There has been several oral tradition and myths that surround the roots of summer breaks. A number of these myths postulate that summer breaks take their origin from the Agrarian family calendar. It would interest you to note that the early American settlements were mainly farmers. And based upon this fact, the children of these farmers had to take out time during the summer to assist their parents in the farms and fields.

However, as wonderful as the aforementioned story may sound, it may not paint the full picture of the truth. The truth is that it may have nothing to do with the children toiling in the farms and fields. It would interest you to note that before the start of the civil war, children never took breaks from school. An instance of the length of time American kids ran sessions in Detroit which had an academic year which ran for about 260 days.

Furthermore, the roots of summer vacation in America takes a lot of its roots from the then increasing upper and middle class of America. For instance, during the summer period, several rich families sought ways to escape the harsh weather of the summer to the cooler areas. This went a long way in affecting the attendance at schools because school attendance wasnt compulsory back then.

Why Do College Students Get Such Long Winter Vacations

Most working adults dont get much official time off during the holidaysthe Explainer, for instance, is only released into the wild on Christmas and New Years Day. But students get tons of vacation timesome college breaks last as long as six weeks. Howd these kids get so lucky?

They can thank the stagflation and energy crisis of the Carter era, mostly. American colleges originally based their academic calendars around the agricultural cycle, commencing the semester after the harvestmuch later than the August start thats typical today. They also once hewed to a standard two-week break around Christmas, with exams scheduled for after the holiday. But in the 1970s, when many academic institutions found themselves in dire fiscal straits , administrators realized that if they altered the calendar, they could reduce spending. By starting the term during late summer and by shutting their doors for a month or more over the winter holidays, they saved significantly on heating costs at a time when oil prices where cripplingly high. Serendipitously, this cost-cutting measure coincided with a broader movement inside academia toward experimental pedagogy, like study abroad, mini-classes, and internship programs that could be completed over a slightly longer break.

Got a question about todays news? .

Is Summer Break Too Short

Austin ISD students get an extra three weeks of summer break | KVUE

Compared to western countries, 40-day summer break seems too short.

But it is considered to be long enough by most of parents.

It is very hot in most places of Japan in July and August. So, you would take your kids to a local library since it has a good air-conditioning. Swimming pools are popular for kids, too. But for parents, it is burning hot to wait for them beside the pool. You get soaked not by immersing yourself in the water, but just by sitting outside. Still, you would take them to those pools a few times a summer. But that would be the maximum.

Working parents dont get long vacation. Average employees get 5 days of summer holidays and believe it or not, not many people take all of them.

That makes it harder to entertain kids during summer break.

In cities, many parents send kids to Juku, a cram school, every day.

Even if the parents can take their entitled summer break from their employers , majority of them spend it to visit their parents in obon. Obon is from August 13 to 15, and people pay homage to their ancestors grave.

If they dont need to do so, they would plan a-week-long trip. Popular destination is Hawaii and domestic sightseeing spots. That would be the highlight of the summer.

So, in the context of Japanese culture, the summer break is not considered short.

Tips To Help You Survive The Summer Break In 2021

Having a plan before summer vacation can go a long way in determining whether or not it will be a rewarding experience. You may not be able to fully determine the overall vacation outcome, but there are steps you can take to ensure it is maximized.

1. Have a plan!

Commuting between work and school vacations can be a Herculean task, however, making plans for each day would go a long way in helping you have something to turn to.

You might want to keep your planner on the wall so everyone gets carried away. Accompanying the children with the plan certainly helps to make them understand their role in the success of all this with their commitments and their sacrifices.

However, its important to stress that as good as planning may seem, too much of it can be counterproductive. You dont want to eliminate the spark that only spontaneity offers. Dont get to the point where you over-plan everything and take away the fun.

2. Rules are important

Rules are a very important factor in any successful system or society. However, it is important to always find a balance in this regard without going too far.

When the break begins, you should know that the routine that accompanies school life disappears, as a result your children will inevitably miss their friends and activities. This can make them want to be rebellious to design rules.

3. Expect the boredom

4. Expect anything

5. A budget would suffice

6. Having fun is not a crime!

For me, high school has only 4 days off in spring and only one week off in winter, so it’s not appropriate. I’m a senior and can’t wait to go to college!

Most American universities have breaks between the spring and summer semesters and long breaks between the summer and fall semesters. I believe that all colleges have a 24 week break during Christmas and most of the time there is a break in March or April between spring or winter and spring semester.

How Many Semesters In A Two

What people refer to as two-year colleges are really just community colleges. Because the vast majority of community colleges are on the traditional semester schedule, there are three available semesters at two-year colleges.

If you take classes in both the fall and spring semesters, then youre considered to have taken a full year of college at a two-year school. You may decide to take summer classes, as well, but they arent required.

There may be some benefits to taking optional summer classes though. These include:

  • The Potential to Graduate Sooner
  • Smaller Classes
  • Greater Availability of Popular Classes
  • Easier to Find Used Textbooks
  • The Ability to Take a Harder Class by Itself

If youre a full-time student at a two-year school, you may earn your associates degree in two years.
