When Do Most College Applications Open
One challenge of college applications is the variability from school to school. Each college chooses how students should apply, when its application opens, and, of course, its final application deadline . This means that every college you apply to probably will likely have different dates and deadlines that you need to track. However, this wont significantly affect your big-picture timeline, since most colleges open up their applications around the same time.
There are other factors that add some uniformity to the college admissions timeline. Many colleges use the Common Application for all Common App schools, the application opens on the day that the Common App opens, August 1st. This Common App opening date has remained the same for some years.
Another frequently used application platform is ApplyTexas, which is used by most public universities in Texas. The ApplyTexas application opens a little bit sooner, around July 1st, and you can submit your application as early as 10:00 AM Central Time that day!
Theres also the University of California Application, which is the only application platform used by all public universities in the University of California networkthese schools include UC Berkeley and UCLA. This application is unique because, though it is released in August, applicants are only allowed to submit their applications from November 1st to November 30th.

Even for colleges with Spring deadlines, it is strongly encouraged to submit applications during the Fall semester in order to be considered for scholarships. Plus, students who apply early are usually the ones who get a decision early!
New Announcement: The Apply Texas application will open July 1st instead of the usual August 1st. Many colleges wont accept applications until after August, but Texas A& M has announced that it will start accepting applications starting July 1st .

So When Is The Best Time To Start On College Applications
We at CollegeVine strongly recommend that you start working on your college applications during the summer before your senior year. This might seem like a long way before your winter application deadlines, but you shouldnt underestimate how long it can take to craft separate essays for each application, finalize your resume, finish up your standardized tests, and compile your activities list. And rememberyoull be doing all this while handling Senior Year coursework! Time really does fly, so its important to start early.
Hopefully, youll already have a preliminary school list by the summer before your senior year. With a school list in hand , you can start getting organized and figuring out which essays youll need to write then, you can use the summer to brainstorm essay topics and start drafting essays. Most of our students find that their essays are one of the most time-consuming parts of the application, and most students put their essays through multiple drafts, proofreading sessions, and revisions before they feel satisfied and ready to submit.
What Are Reach Match And Safety Schools
BigFuture introduces test scores as one additional factor to weigh as you refine your list. Think about narrowing your colleges into three categories:
- Reaches: Your SAT or ACT® score is lower than the average score range of last years freshman class.
- Matches: Your SAT or ACT score is solidly in the same score range as last years freshman class.
- Safeties: Your SAT or ACT score is higher than the average score range of last years freshman class.

Write In An Authentic Voice
Just as your child searched for a topic that feels true to who they are, they should strive to find a natural tone and voice. This doesnt mean the essay should read like a transcript of them speaking to or texting their friends. But they also dont want their essay to read as pretentious. Humor can be a great tool, but if its just not your childs personality, dont force it.
The truth is that writing or editing an essay so that it sounds natural can take a lot of effort. So, if it takes your child several tries to find the right tone, dont panic!

College Essay Example #1
This past summer, I had the privilege of participating in the University of Notre Dames Research Experience for Undergraduates program . Under the mentorship of Professor Wendy Bozeman and Professor Georgia Lebedev from the department of Biological Sciences, my goal this summer was to research the effects of cobalt iron oxide cored titanium dioxide nanoparticles as a scaffold for drug delivery, specifically in the delivery of a compound known as curcumin, a flavonoid known for its anti-inflammatory effects. As a high school student trying to find a research opportunity, it was very difficult to find a place that was willing to take me in, but after many months of trying, I sought the help of my high school biology teacher, who used his resources to help me obtain a position in the program.
Living on the Notre Dame campus with other REU students, UND athletes, and other summer school students was a whole other experience that prepared me for the world beyond high school. For 9 weeks, I worked, played and bonded with the other students, and had the opportunity to live the life of an independent college student.

Introduction To The College Application Timeline
Theres no denying how busy your childs junior and senior years can get. In addition to being two of their toughest academic years, your child will be tasked with maximizing their standardized test scores, continuing to pursue high-impact extracurricular activities, securing recommendation letters, and working on their college applications by writing essay upon essay.
Given their various responsibilities, your child should follow a timeline for what to complete and when. Otherwise, they may have to play catch-up at a later time, which can lead not only to unnecessary stress, but also weaker applications. With all the hard work theyve put into setting themselves up for successful college admissions, its important that your child not fall behind during this critical period.
We developed a recommended college application timeline to help ensure that your child completes all their junior- and senior-year to-dos ahead of time and with little anxiety. Rather than include general advice or things they have to do as part of their schooling , our timeline exclusively focuses on when your child should complete various tasks associated with their applications.
In addition, some of the timelines bullets may not apply to your child. For instance, if theyre not looking to apply to any University of California schools, feel free to disregard those bullets.

Your College Planning Timeline For Early Deadlines
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your application be. You need to take time filling out your application, thoughtfully writing about your extracurricular involvement, and proofreading all of the information for errors. Apart from filling out your app, you’ll have to take time fulfilling other requirements. Three that demand the most planning and time are your personal essay, recommendation letters, and SAT or ACT scores.
You should spend a few months thinking about and writing your personal essay. Giving yourself space to brainstorm and mull over ideas is an important part of the writing process that can take weeks. Since your essay is such an important part of your application, you should spend a couple of months drafting, getting feedback, and revising it until it feels precise and authentic, almost like a work of art.
To meet an early deadline, you might begin working on your essay over the summer before senior year. While it’s rare that the Common App changes its essay prompts, they have done so in the past. Common App announced these changes in August. Most recently, Common App made changes to its essay prompts in February 2021 you can learn all about those changes here. Keep this in mind when working on your essay, but don’t worry about drastic changes in the questions. Generally speaking, they all ask you to communicate something important about your identity and show how you make meaning of significant experiences in your life.

Whats The Point Of A Capstone Project
Some students are engaged in extracurricular pursuits that have a natural finale or milestone. A competitive varsity athlete can aim to become state champion. An actress can hope to star in her senior play.
But what if your childs interests dont fit neatly into a preexisting club?
Thats where a capstone project can help a high school student go from being a tinkerer to someone accomplished in a particular field or area. By learning how to direct their personal interest into a concrete project with measurable results, your child will grow immensely, and will enter college prepared to tackle more adult challenges from internships to major papers to lab research.
Remember a few things:
-
A capstone project may not be for everyone.
-
A capstone project is a way to deepen and test interests. If your child finds out during the course of the pursuit that they dont love what theyre doing, thats okay. They might benefit from staying committed to what theyve started, just to see it through, or you might be able to help them taper things off early so they still reach one milestone but dont have to devote a whole year to the project.

The Coalition Application is accepted by more than 90 institutions. The platform includes The Locker, a private space for you to collect and organize materials throughout high school that you might want to share with colleges and universities.
The Common Application is a standardized application used by nearly 700 colleges. Each year, nearly a million students use the Common Application to submit over 4 million applications.
The Universal College Application is accepted by more than 30 colleges and universities. You can register as an applicant in order to start applying.
Be aware that you may need to submit additional or separate documents to some colleges. You also still need to pay individual application fees for each college.
Quick Tips For Getting Your Applications In On Time
Now that you know what you need to apply, here are a few quick tips to streamline the application process and make sure you meet your college application deadlines:
Start early: Even if youre planning to apply to schools on a rolling basis, dont put off tasks for the last minute. Set aside enough time for each application component because almost everything takes longer than you anticipate.
Create a college application calendar: From meeting with your school counselor to tracking all testing and academic requirements prepare a college application calendar marking deadlines for every important step.
Fill out the Common Application: The Common Application is an undergraduate online college application form used by over 900 schools in the US. Its a huge time saver because you only need to fill out the details once to apply to any number of the registered schools.
Notify your school: Colleges ask for a copy of your high school transcript and a letter of recommendation, which is why you need to let school officials know where you intend to apply at least a month prior to application.
Set deadlines before the deadline: Beat procrastination and set a personal deadline for yourself at least a few days before the actual deadline.
