  • You can expect the Basic Math Placement Test to cover arithmetic and pre-algebra skills.
  • An Algebra Test is generally given as a separate portion of the basic test.
  • Some incoming students will be given an Advanced Mathematics Placement Test, which includes college algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

The three levels tested are:

How To Study For A College Assessment Test

Colleges and universities require entering freshmen to take assessment tests to determine placement in English and math courses. These specific tests vary from school to school, but they typically contain multiple-choice questions and require students to write a short essay that assesses writing skills. A high enough score allows you to skip certain courses, and a low score may indicate you need to take preparatory classes before being allowed to take college-level composition and algebra. Some preparation increases your chances of doing well on the assessments.

Ask the assessment office about study materials. They may have study guides or offer workshops to help you prepare for the exam.

Review test-taking strategies. With multiple-choice exams, try to narrow options by eliminating choices that seem outlandish. If you will need to write an essay, look over suggestions for timed writing assignments and essay exams. For instance, remember to budget your time to allow for revision and proofreading and decide on ways to organize before you begin to write.

Read punctuation and grammar rules in a writer’s handbook for the English assessment. Do the exercises in the book to get practice applying the concepts, since these are the kinds of questions multiple-choice sections about writing usually contain. Practice writing essays to brush up on your skills.

Taking The Placement Test

  • 1Take your time when working through the problems. Donât rush through your placement test, even if you think you are an expert. Work slowly through the problems and make sure to read each one carefully. Double check your work if you have time to make sure you are answering correctly.XResearch source
  • Some math placement tests are timed, but others are not. If yours is timed, do the questions that take you the least time first and then move onto harder ones.
  • 2Complete the sample questions if your test gives them to you. Some standardized placement tests, like Accuplacer, give you 1 to 2 sample questions to prepare you for the section you are about to take. Use these questions as an example of what is to come and prepare yourself for questions that are similar.XResearch source
  • Use these questions to think back on what you have reviewed and go over the general rules in your head.
  • 3Skip the questions you donât know and come back to them. If you get stuck on a question, leave it until the very end and focus on the problems that you do know how to answer. Be sure to mark your page or remember to come back to it somehow so you donât leave it blank. Leave yourself enough time at the end of the test to complete the problems you were unsure about.XResearch source
  • Some colleges will not give you credit for your math class until you reach a certain level. Check with your course advisor to see how many math classes you need to take for your particular department or degree.

Why Do Colleges Require Math Placement Tests

Once admitted to college, you may be asked to take placement tests for various subjects, not just math. You might wonder, Why? Although college admissions representatives can read your high school transcripts and view courses youve taken, they understand that theres variation in what is taught and how well students must master it to achieve their grades. The colleges math courses might not align perfectly with what high schools offer, so a college-level math placement test score provides a more accurate assessment of what youve mastered and where you should be placed.

Students who are placed too high or too low in the math curriculum can become frustrated with their progress. This frustration can result in poor learning, inadequate performance, and dropping out. Your college wants you to succeed, just as you want to succeed. When youre matched with the right math content, youll do better, be happier with your experience, and be more likely to stay in school.
