The essential theory is to match courses taken at the old school with comparable courses that exist at the new school. When there is a substantial match, the old school course can get full credit at the new school. The transfer that each student makes to a new school has likely been done before by other students, and there may be existing evaluations of the courses from the previous school.
In some schools, the student can view a list of courses and transfer evaluations. A typical display might associate the course number from a junior college with a course number at the four-year school. The equivalence valuation allows transfer of the junior college course credits as if the student had completed the equivalent course at the new school.

Position Yourself To Get Good Letters Of Recommendation
It’s important that you don’t burn bridges at your current college. Many transfer applications require at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member at your current school, so make sure you have a good relationship with one or two professors who will give you positive recommendations. You’ll be in an awkward position if you need to ask for a letter from a professor whose class you’ve regularly skipped or who doesn’t know you well.
Step outside of your own shoes and think about what a recommender will say about you. Your transfer application will be much stronger with a recommendation letter that begins “All of us at ABC College will be sorry to see John leave us” rather than “Although I don’t know John well…”
Finally, be thoughtful and give your recommenders plenty of time to write their letters. It’s inconsiderate and unreasonable to ask for a letter that is due in 24 hours, and you may very well get a refusal from your professor. Plan ahead, and make sure the people recommending you have at least a couple of weeks to write their letters.
What Is A Degree Completion Program
If you have completed several semesters of school and only have one or two classes with poor grades, a degree completion program may be an option for you. These programs are designed for motivated adult learners to transfer into a school to complete their degree.
Many of these programs seek students who have a solid GPA, but they also look at factors beyond your grades, such as:
- Overall academic preparation and motivation
- A minimum number of transferable credits from an accredited school
- Completion of specific undergraduate courses
- Life experience and work or professional activities
While degree completion programs may not be a viable option if you have minimal credits and multiple courses with less than a C average, it is worth checking into the transfer policy of schools offering these programs to see if you qualify.

Testing Your Way Out Of Re
Sometimes, its not just credits that qualify you. You can take tests to prove your knowledge of a prerequisite course. There are nationally recognized testing companies, like CLEP and DSST that test you on a number of subjects. The exams cost money but its going to be a lot less than paying for the course itself.

- Before submitting your Application for Transfer Credit/Exemption, please read through all the information. Requests won’t be accepted if the form is completed incorrectly or the form has not been dated, and the certified electronic signature box is not checked.
- Please be aware: Courses approved as equivalent and dropped from your timetable may impact your status as a full-time student, which may impact fee calculation and eligibility for OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, and student health plans.
- Transfer credits are normally accepted from accredited colleges and universities. All other institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis unless an articulation agreement exists.
- Transfer credits will not be awarded for courses taken at career/private colleges .
- Transfer credits from high school courses may only qualify if they are dual-credit courses.
- Courses being transferred must be completed in the last five years to qualify unless specified by the program coordinator.
- Once transfer credit has been accepted for one course, it cannot be used again towards another course in the same program.
- Partial transfer credits will not be granted.
- Denied transfer credits are not subject to appeals however, students will be provided with the reason why their request was denied.
Transfer credit requests should be submitted upon acceptance to your program to avoid delays in the decision process.
