Save On Bernhardt With 38 Seconds Left

After Virginia took a timeout, still clinging to the aforementioned 17-15 lead, Maryland got the ball to their superstar. Bernhardt is far and away the favorite to win the Tewaaraton, and the Hoos namely Saustad had done a fantastic job in limiting him to two goals and two assists, with just one assist in the second half. Out of the timeout, Bernhardt used a pick to get just enough space to let off a hard shot towards cage.

Rode saw it the whole way, getting the save and getting it to Kology. Maryland would eventually get a goal after the referee wrongly gave possession to the Terps despite Moore being closer to the end line on Kologys field-length shot at the open goal, but this was a big save at a big time.

2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship TOWSON, MARYLAND – MAY 30: The Boston College Eagles celebrate after defeating the Syracuse Orange in the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Johnny Unitas Stadium on May 30, 2021 in Towson, Maryland.

BOSTON For the first time ever, a Boston College womens team has won a national championship. Led by six goals from Charlotte North, who became the NCAAs all-time single-season scoring leader with 102 goals, BC beat Syracuse 16-10 to claim the first national title in a womans team sport in school history.

We put together a full game and Acacia said we were going to come out hungry and play our best for 60 minutes, we were going to win, said North. We believed in that. We believed in each other. We came out on top. Im so happy. Im so proud, and its a credit to all of my teammates. This is the best team in the country. And we have the best coaching staff in the entire world.

The Eagles led Syracuse 9-8 at halftime and only allowed two goals in the second half to one of the most explosive offensive attacks in the country.

We had a hyper-awareness of their top players. And our goaltending was amazing, said head coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein. Rachel Hall was really focused today. And we have to be excellent to stop the Syracuse offense, especially that weave thats close to impossible to stop.

Belle Smith, Cara Urbank, Jenn Medjid and Courtney Weeks each scored two goals for the Eagles.

    Cormier Goal Before Halftime

In a game of runs, Virginia always had an answer. The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair before the Hoos turned a 4-4 tie into an 8-4 lead with 8:33 to play in the second quarter. Maryland responded with three straight goals to make it a one-goal game just over three minutes later. Thanks to a turnover from Marylands Jared Bernhardt with 1:35 left, Virginia was able to clear the ball and take a timeout to prep for one last play of the half.

Connor Shellenberger worked the clock down to 30 seconds before initiating the offense. He found Payton Cormier drifting towards the goal, and the Oaktown Ox deposited the ball past the Maryland keeper. This sent the Hoos into the break up 9-7 and with some momentum.

    North Carolina Vs Virginia

Safe: UVA was definitely impressive versus Georgetown and their aggressive play was the difference last weekend. However, so long as UNC doesnt get dominated on faceoffs, I think the Tar Heels should prevail in this one. I am going with North Carolina.

Adam: I think we need to pump the brakes on Virginias defense suddenly turning things around. They didnt look great against Bryant and then happened to match up really well athletically with Georgetown. North Carolina is a different story. With Gray and their midfield, they have the athletes to make life difficult for the Hoos D, like theyve done twice already this season. Carolina rebounds from the scare against Rutgers and heads to the title game.

Jake: Im really not sure which way to go here. Carolina has been the better team throughout the season, but Virginia feels like the hotter one, and its been a long time since theyve lost in this tournament. If Carolina was fully healthy Id go with the Heels, but I think some of their injuries limit their offense like we saw against Rutgers and the Cavs defense is peaking. Hoos get back to Monday. Virginia.

The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship was the 50th annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national championship for National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men’s college lacrosse. Because the Ivy League did not participate in lacrosse this season, no play-in game was required.

Sixteen teams competed in the tournament based upon their performance during the regular season. For eight teams, entry into the tournament was by means of a conference tournament automatic qualifier and/or play in, while for the remaining eight teams at-large selection was determined by the NCAA selection committee.

Virginia took control over a 150 Maryland team in the Championship Game, and at one point led 1611. But Maryland quickly closed that gap throughout the fourth quarter. The Terps had an open shot on goal to tie the game with two seconds left off a face off, but a great save by Alex Rode won the title for UVA. This was Virginia’s seventh NCAA lacrosse title.
