Do I Have To Go To School?

Mark Zuckerberg, a decade after dropping out of Harvard to start Facebook, returned to his old sort-of-alma-mater this spring to give the universitys yearly graduation address. Amid some awkwardly smarmy jokes, Zuckerberg gave a bit of genuinely thoughtful advice:

Purpose is that sense that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, that we are needed, that we have something better ahead to work for. Purpose is what creates true happiness.

An entrepreneurial culture thrives when its easy to try lots of new ideas. Facebook wasnt the first thing I built. I also built games, chat systems, study tools and music players. Im not alone. J.K. Rowling got rejected 12 times before publishing Harry Potter. Even Beyoncé had to make hundreds of songs to get Halo. The greatest successes come from having the freedom to fail Right now our society is way over-indexed on rewarding success and we dont do nearly enough to make it easy for everyone to take lots of shots.

Zuckerbergs message there was nothing new: If you have an idea, and believe in it, take a risk, and work hard at it. But coming from him in particular, its a good reminder that the biggest and boldest success stories have nothing to do with whats expected.

To apply to any college or university, you usually need a GED or high school diploma as a prerequisite.

Colleges are becoming more inclusive in their enrollment process, as they recognize many students might not have had the privilege of graduating high school.

Take The Right Classes

Your high school courses matter. Talk with your counselor each year to make sure you are taking the right classes to graduate. But you should also think about taking higher-level courses that will help you get into college. Start by taking the basic classes:

  • Language Arts or English: Take every year.
  • Math: Take at least three years, but preferably four years of math. It can be a mix of Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus.
  • Science: Take at least three years. It can be a mix of Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

College can offer many benefits and can be an effective path for some people. But, a higher education does not automatically equate to success, and it’s not the only path to a lucrative career.

From courses to workshops, low-cost or free educational online opportunities are changing the way students and employers are perceiving college education.

Some businesses, like Tesla, question the value of a college degree and instead, put more emphasis on skills and talent. Whether you decide to pursue a college education or get your training from real-world experience, the most important thing is to never stop learning.

How Long Do Colleges Keep Transcripts

Do I Have To Go To College To Get My Real Estate License?

College transcripts do not expire and schools are obligated to maintain transcripts for all students who have enrolled in and attended their institution regardless of whether or not that student graduated. Whether you last attended a school six months ago or more than two decades ago, you are able to request access to your permanent academic records from any school youve attended. Colleges and universities maintain these records so that employers can verify a person has the educational background necessary of applicants, or so former students can share their educational credentials with other schools to continue their education.

What Did I End Up Doing After Graduating

After college I still did not know exactly what I wanted to do. I could not find a company that would let me be their CEO right off the bat and I did not have any ideas for starting a business. While I figured out what I should do, I moved back to my home town and worked part-time with my dad in real estate. I got my real estate license, helped him flip houses and 14 years later I am sure glad I made that choice.

I did not find success in real estate right away. In the beginning I treated it as a job and put in the hours without thinking much about what I was doing and why. When I started to think about being an agent as a business, planning my work and setting goals my career took off. Once I started to treat things as a business I started using my contacts from college and ended up hiring my college roommate as my team manager. I contacted my college and have thought about working with them and their real estate department. When I meet someone from my college it also creates an instant connection.

Although college did not directly teach me how to be a real estate agent, it helped me be successful in many ways.

  • I learned a lot about business and investing
  • I learned how little I wanted to be in the corporate world
  • I met a lot of very smart people and made many lifelong connections
  • I matured a lot before I started my career
  • As an alumni I have more contacts and better ability to network with others

Do You Need A College Degree To Be A Writer

by Kellie McGann |

Im a full-time writer with no English degree. And after doing this for a few years Ive learned the answer to an enormous question: do you need a college degree to be a writer? No.

*Let me throw in a disclaimer here: I strongly believe in education. I think that education paves the way for opportunity and we are all better because of it. However, I am writing this to challenge the concept that a writer can and will only be bred in an educational institution.*

What Not To Do When Trying To Get A High

There are two things you should not do before we get to the things you can do to secure a great income sans degree.

Settle

The impetus when youre looking for a job, especially in a bad economy, is to take the first job thats offered to you. When you need money, take the sure thing, right? Maybe not.

I once applied for an internship in my desired career field during a summer break. Before I had heard whether or not I got it, I decided to take a minimum wage job in the food court at the local mall. Lo and behold, I got the internship. It not only paid more than minimum wage, but also gave me an in to the career I wanted to pursue. It made for a difficult conversation with the food court employers. They were upset they had wasted time in the hiring process of someone who would leave before she even started.

If you can subsist on your savings or gifts from your high school graduation for a few months, do that. If you take a job right away, you may not have the time to search for anything else.

Waste Your Time

Use those few months to your advantage. Now is not the time to reward yourself for all of your hard work in high school by lounging around.

Instead, use this time to search for jobs that fit your skill set and make a good, liveable wage and have room for advancement. Apply for as many as you can and take every interview youre offered. Even if you decide you dont want the job, it will be good practice.

Are Credit Hours Transferable

Why Do I Have To Go To School?

Many factors can impact whether a students credits will transferthe question of which credits can transfer and how many depends on the chosen college or university.

If a student is looking to transfer to a new college or university, whether from a community college or a different 4-year college or university, it is crucial to utilize all available resources. While sometimes tedious, transferring credits is worth the extra step as it can save students time and money down the road.

A great place to start is on a college or universitys website. Colleges and universities tend to have valuable information and resources there. For instance, to ensure a smooth process to see how courses will transfer from Illinois colleges and universities, North Central College provides Transferology, as well as Transfer Guides on its website. These documents share insight into which courses meet North Central Colleges requirements in the core curriculum and academic majors and minors.

Additionally, North Central College recommends reaching out to a transfer admission counselor and viewing their transfer credit policy if students have additional questions. Here, students can add more in-depth inquiries such as what grades are needed for a credit to be transferred and the maximum amount of credit hours that can be applied.

Study For A Job Not A Degree

Already know what profession you like? Then, go seek it out directly.

In Germany, around 60% of young people train as apprenticesin fields all over, from banking to IT to manufacturing. In the US, that number is below 5%, and mainly only has to do with construction jobs. Thats because the idea of dual training, or splitting yourself between on-the-job time at a company and classroom time at a vocational school, is much more popular in Europe than it is in America.

But that doesnt mean young Americans cant apply the same idea. If youre interested in welding, metal work, masonry, forestry, landscaping, or many other hands-on fields, it wont be difficult to find apprenticeships or internships that can lead directly to a full-time job. For industries like art, journalism, or music, things will prove a little trickier still, the majority of jobs in these industries only prefer a bachelors degree, and employers focus much more on your talents and experiences than your official credentials.

Are You Willing To Put Your Life On Hold

While theres a lot of growing, maturing, and studying to be had at college, its still just an extension of your academic life. You wont be getting on with a career, you wont have a lot of free time to explore your hobbies, and you might even be living in a dorm where there are a lot of rules about what you can and cant do with your space and your time.

For some people, this works as a great transition from being a teenager to being an adult.

For others, though, it just slows them down.

Maybe youre ready to live on your own, and maybe youre not sure you want to spend four years getting a degree. Maybe you want to start work right now. And thats great!

Real-life experience is incredibly valuable. In fact, one survey of American employers showed that most managers still consider internships, employment during college, and volunteer experience more important than GPA or relevant coursework when evaluating a candidates readiness for a job.

    Experience wins.

You Might Not Be Academically Inclined

Do I Have to Go to School Today by Larry Shles

Most people are capable of doing college-level work if they’re motivated and apply themselves. That being said, some people just detest school or don’t have the aptitude to do well in a college environment.

Keep in mind, though, that college gives you so much more freedom than high school to explore your academic interests and find the fields in which you can excel. Similarly, if there’s a subject that confuses you and that you absolutely abhor, you can probably avoid taking classes in it in college.
