The College World Series is an annual competition between the best teams in college baseball to decide the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The tournament was first played in 1947 at Hyames Field in Kalamazoo, Michigan, then in Lawrence Stadium in Wichita, Kansas in 1949 before it moved to Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska from 1950 to 2010 when it moved to its current stadium, TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha Nebraska.

The series itself takes place in June and consists of two double-elimination brackets of four teams each. The winners advance to play in a double-elimination round and the winners of that round face-off in the championship series. The winner of the championship series is crowned Division I Champion for the season. The 2019 Campions are the Vanderbilt Commodores, who have now claimed their second title. The USC Trojans have the most titles with 12. The Texas Longhorns have made the most appearances with 36. They also have the most wins in the history of the tournament with 85. Florida State has the most wins without a championship with 30.

What Is The Difference Between The Division I Baseball Tournament And The College World Series

These eight teams then head to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series. The CWS is the culmination of the DI tournament, where the teams compete in two brackets, with the winners of each meeting in the CWS finals, a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are one win away from their third College World Series title in the last decade.

Vanderbilt took Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series over the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Monday.

Tuesday’s Game 2 presents an interesting dynamic since neither team is expected to throw their top pitchers. Kumar Rocker and Will Bednar could be saved for Game 3 based off the required rest they both need to be effective on the hill.

Vanderbilt used Jack Leiter to get the Game 1 victory, so it will need to dig deep into its pitching staff to finish off the series in two games.

Game 2: Vanderbilt vs. Mississippi State

Preview

Vanderbilt took control of the series by plating seven runs in the first inning on Monday.

Christian MacLeod did not last a whole frame for Mississippi State, but the team did receive some solid pitching after he departed the diamond.

The pitching from the second to eighth innings is the only true positive the Bulldogs can take from Game 1.

Five relievers combined to give up two earned runs on three hits, and they gave their lineup an opportunity to produce a comeback.

Mississippi State’s bats were limited by Leiter’s strong six-inning outing and a nice three-inning relief stint from Nick Maldonado.

Vanderbilt can also fall back on Rocker starting in Game 3 if it fails to close out the series on Tuesday.

Which Teams Are In The College World Series

Four of the top five national seeds have qualified for the CWS, with Arkansas being the notable exception.

Virginia are the other unseeded team in the CWS, after they defeated Dallas Baptist University 2-1.

Mississippi State, ranked No. 7, completes the draw after progressing to the CWS with a 2-1 win over the No. 10 seed Notre Dame in the Super Regional.

Weather Forecast For Omaha

Unfortunately, Mother Nature might play a role in the series as well. Theres a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the Omaha area Monday night that could delay the proceedings.

NCAA rules prohibit a game from starting after 11 p.m. local time, so expect officials to at least get tonights game underway if possible. The forecast looks better for the remainder of the week.

Mississippi State Wins The 2021 College World Series

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are national champions. They shutout Vanderbilt, 9-0, in Game 3 of the finals to take home the 2021 College World Series title. It is MSUs first NCAA national championship across all sports in school history.

Vanderbilt was vying for back-to-back titles but one player in maroon and white squashed those dreams. This time around it was not Kumar Rocker, 2019s CWS Most Outstanding Player, who hoisted the trophy and led his team to dominance. It was Will Bednar, on his way to becoming the 2021 College World Series Most Outstanding Player.

Bednar did not allow a hit through six innings. Oh, and he pitched on three days rest.

Landon Sims piggybacked off Bednar with three innings of shutout ball. The no-hitter remained in tack until Carter Young’s single in the eighth.

Bednar and Sims combined to no-hit the Commodores through 7.1 innings.

MSUs pitching was dominant and so was its offense. Just like Game 1 and Game 2, the Bulldogs scored first in the first inning. Rowdey Jordan led off the game with a single and advanced from first to third on a throwing error by Rocker. Jordan then scored on a sacrifice fly for the games first run.

Two walks and a pitch clock violation helped taint the second inning for Rocker. Those two walks turned into two runs off a ground out and double by Rowdey, 3-0 MSU.

Who Does Mississippi State Baseball Play Next In College World Series: Bulldogs Play The Winner Of The Virginia Cavaliers Texas Longhorns Game

The Cavaliers and Longhorns are set to clash in an elimination game that will send a fourth team home from the College World Series.

So far, the Arizona Wildcats, the Tennessee Volunteers, and the Stanford Cardinal have all been eliminated. Once their game wraps up, either the Cavaliers or the Longhorns will be sent home as well.

But while this game will force one team to leave Omaha, it will also send another on for a rematch with the Mississippi State baseball team. Whichever team wins tonight will face the Bulldogs Friday evening.

If the winner between the Cavaliers and the Longhorns finds a way to beat Mississippi State Friday at 6 p.m., they must then turn around and beat the Bulldogs for a second time on Saturday, June 26 at 6 p.m.

That means MSU has a pretty big advantage thanks to its 2-1 win over Texas and its 6-5 victory over Virginia.
