Women Coaches Remain Dominant

Since the 1980s, the number of women head coaches in NCAA Division I sports has steadily declined, but theyve continued to dominate the college softball landscape.

For the fifth consecutive WCWS, both teams in the world series final had women head coaches, with Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso collecting her third national championship title in the last five tournaments and Florida State head coach Lonni Alameda competing in her second WCWS finals in the last three.

Under Gassos leadership, Oklahoma became the first team to win six consecutive elimination games at the world series. Gassos .644 winning percentage at the world series is the third-highest of all time, and she has the second-most WCWS head coach wins .

Though they couldnt finish the job, Alamedas No. 10 seeded Seminoles knocked off the No. 11 Arizona Wildcats, the No. 5 Oklahoma State Cowgirls and the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide all within the span of three days.

Women accounted for five of the eight head coaches in the 2021 WCWS, 10 of the 16 in the NCAA D-I tournament super regionals and 43 of the 64 in the NCAA D-I tournament regionals.

The 2021 NCAA Division I Womens College World Series of Softball is here, with the best 8 teams across the country facing off in a double elimination bracket that begins Thursday, June 3 at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Games in the bracket will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPN U, with the championship series broadcast on ESPN. These channels can all be streamed on fuboTV, AT& T TV, Sling and other live TV streaming services. Full TV and streaming schedule below.

The double elimination tournament starts looking similar to the regional tier, with two brackets each featuring four teams. As the series progresses, losing teams have a chance at redemption in the elimination bracket, meaning its theoretically possible for a team to lose their first game, but still win the World Series.

In the Super Regional Stage, Oklahoma swept Washington, including a 9-1 pounding in Game 2, to advance to the World Series bracket. Georgia also posted back-to-back shutout wins over Florida in the Super Regional Stage.

On the other side of the bracket, Florida State swept LSU by only a point per game . Arizona and Alabama also both swept their best-of-three series.

Alexander Steals The Show

UF softball team ready for Women

Oklahoma State seemed poised to break through in the top of the seventh against James Madison and Alexander in their second-round meeting.

The Cowgirls had runners on second and third with one out, trailing by a run.

Chelsea Alexander laid down a bunt to try to get the tying run home and move the winning run to third but Odicci Alexander had other ideas.

The Dukes star charged hard at the bunt, then kept moving to the plate, diving to tag Scotland David for the out, creating a play that will be shown on WCWS highlight reels for years to come.

Alexander was shaken up on the play, coming down hard on her shoulder, but got the final out to make James Madison the first unseeded team ever to win its first two games in the tournament.

Interest In Softball Is Higher Than Ever Despite Ncaas Scheduling Issues

The WCWS viewership has been on the rise for decades, and this years tournament continued that trend.

The 2021 WCWS shattered the previous viewership record and easily became the most-watched world series in history. The tournament drew an average of 1.20 million viewers per game, an increase of 10% from the previous world series, and the three-game final series averaged 1.84 million viewers per game, an increase of 15% from the last world series.

Excluding the NBA playoffs, the WCWS pulled in the two largest ESPN audiences since Aprils NFL draft, with Game 1 attracting an average of 1.86 million viewers and Game 2 averaging 2.08 million viewers.

And yet, the mismanaged and poorly constructed schedule of the series belies its popularity.

The 2021 WCWS was originally scheduled across seven days from June 3 to 9, but it was stretched through June 10 because of a rain delay. The lengthened schedule gave the womens teams eight days to play up to 17 games. In contrast, the mens College World Series is scheduled from June 19 to 30, giving the mens teams four more days to play up to 17 games.

In the mens CWS, each team is guaranteed at least three rest days throughout the tournament and could have a maximum of six rest days depending on how many wins it racks up. In the WCWS, each of the eight teams received only one rest day this year, and several teams that entered the losers bracket early on were forced to play doubleheaders.

Oklahoma Coach Slams Wcws Despite Title: Its Shameful

Even though they won the championship, Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso hasnt hid her criticism of the event one bit.

Gasso called out the NCAA this week on ESPN, and demanded better facilities, scheduling and more.

“As much as people enjoy watching us and there’s a lot of revenue and a lot of eyes on this championship, we’re still not being treated or have the same opportunities, amenities that others do and it’s sad for me,” Gasso said, via ESPN. “I’m not one that speaks up, but I’m being brave and trying to stand up more for the sport to say these players and these coaches and these teams deserve more.

“We deserve a better bracket, better timing, we deserve instant replay, we deserve locker rooms, we deserve showers, we deserve batting cages, we have to go find our own cages otherwise our teams are going to stand out in the hot sun taking batting practice in one cage on an open field. That’s unheard of. So there’s a lot of things we have to do on our own to make it happen, to make the experience better for our athletes, versus it handed to us. It’s shameful, it really is and I’m committed to help this change.”

Letting The Emotions Loose

Florida States Elizabeth Mason started the sixth inning of Game 2 of the championship series by lining a shot to left that seemed destined for extra bases.

But the Sooners Mackenzie Donihoo had other ideas, taking off on a dead sprint toward the wall, then leaping and snagging the ball at the warning track.

It was a difficult catch but the importance of that moment with the Sooners leading 5-2 and needing to win to avoid elimination combined with the emotion Donihoo showed after make the catch elevated it.

Donihoo pounded the ball on the wall after taking it from her glove, then let out a scream as she turned back around.

Donihoo was outstanding all week, both at the plate and in the field, and this was her biggest moment.
