What Should I Do If I Don’t Go To College?

If the interviewer asks this question, it is most likely to assess which financial aid programs, grants or scholarships may be options for you. If you plan to seek financial aid, let them know in your answer what steps you have already taken to address the costs of college.

Example:“I was awarded several scholarships during high school, and I will be seeking additional qualifying grants.”

What Dont You Want To Do

If you arent sure what interests you, it may be easier to decide which kinds of jobs you dont want to have first. Many jobs are available that only require a high school diploma, but before you decide to skip college, check to see whether any of them interest you.;

Most retail positions dont require any sort of post-secondary education, and you probably dont need a degree if you want to work with children in a daycare setting. If youre an introvert, becoming a mail carrier could be a good choice. You also dont have to go to school to become self-employed.

Many jobs that only require a high school diploma are entry-level, though, and you may have a hard time getting promoted without a degree. If you know that you dont want to stay in an entry-level position for a long time, consider going to college.

Take A Class That Teaches A Practical Skill

While Wessell truly enjoyed studying the subjects she majored and minored in political science, Japanese and math one elective she took has proven to be surprisingly beneficial. She says, That one graphic design class has helped me in my day-to-day life more than all of my other classes combined.

For Wessells WayUp cofounder, it was a negotiation class he took in college. Now, she says, hes the guy who negotiates when we get term sheets from venture capital funds.

Why you should do this while youre still in college:Even if your first job aligns perfectly with your major, the working world will inevitably call on other parts of you. Thats why its smart to acquire a skill or skills such as the ones just mentioned that will provide you with tools and a perspective which you can apply to a variety of fields. If you take one class in a very practical skill, whether its a computer science class, a negotiation class, or a writing class, it will pay off dividends, says Wessel.

What Do You Love To Do

Being forced to choose a major is stressful. Perhaps you fear failure or the idea that making the wrong decision will lead to an unhappy and unfulfilled life. One of the main reasons students drop out of college is that they feel unsatisfied with their coursework and the whole college experience. Often, this is a result of doing things they simply do not enjoy and ignoring their true passions.

It doesnt need to be this way, especially if you explore your degree options based on activities and hobbies you already love. It may sound cliche, but doing what you love is a surefire way to a happy life. This is where a list of potential majors can come in handy.

But what if you cant even come up with a list of college degrees you might like to pursue? If you find yourself drawing a blank, dig deeper into your memory vaults and try to picture a time when you felt really, really happy with what you were doing. This might be an extracurricular activity at school, your first job, a volunteer event, or some other instance where you had an overwhelming sense of well-being.

Without judgment, begin jotting all of these thoughts on a list. For now, lets call this your inspiration list. Yours will be unique, of course, but here is a basic example of an inspiration list.;

Get To Know Your Professors

Why should you go to college

While this may sound like currying favour to you, it is not actually that. You dont have to try and be friends with your college professors. The relationship should rather be that of a master and a disciple. Get to know your professors because they are the people best suited to guide you on possible future career choices. Soak up all of their sagaciousness like a sponge. Talk to them after class about courses, research projects, interviews and the like. It also helps create a particular image of you in their mind when they see someone being really sincere about their academics and the like; it may also help you gain brownie points during practical exams, viva and recommendations for jobs.

Know Your Strengths And Weaknesses

For some students, making the switch to online learning from a traditional classroom is an easy transition, while others struggle to adapt to a virtual learning environment that requires a different set of skills.

Minnesota State University provides a list of skills that make a successful online learner. In addition to technology-related topics, you’ll find sections on persistence, time management, effective communication, self-motivation, and more. How would you rate yourself in each of these areas? Try the Online Course Readiness Quiz from the University of Arkansas to find out.

You should also consider your interests and abilities as they relate to specific course topics. If you’ve always struggled with chemistry, for example, a face-to-face class with study groups and teaching assistants may be the better option. But, if you’ve already taken advanced chemistry classes and done well, completing a chemistry course online instead of in person might give you the flexibility you need elsewhere in your schedule.

  • You want a wide variety of clubs, sports, and activities to choose from on a daily basis.
  • Youre okay with your professors not knowing your name, or youre willing to make yourself stand out and get to know your professors.
  • You want everyone to recognize the name of your school when you tell them where you go.
  • You love sports and want to cheer on your team at big games.
  • Youre undecided for your major or youre pursuing an obscure major that isnt offered at smaller schools.
  • Youre more inclined to go after what you want and understand that you will have to compete with a lot of other students for opportunities.
  • You want to have a large alumni network when you graduate.
  • You get energized and exhilarated by large groups of people.
  • You dont mind being taught by teaching assistants instead of your professor.

Internships And Research Opportunities

Nothing helps more when applying for jobs out of college than having hands-on, practical experience on your resume. Look for schools that have vigorous programs for experiential learning. Great colleges will give you opportunities to assist professors with funded research, secure meaningful summer internships with companies that interest you, and take advantage of a strong alumni network when you are looking for work after graduation.

Internships and research experience are important whether you’re a mechanical engineer or an English major, so be sure to ask the admissions officers at your desired school about experiential learning opportunities.

The Study Cycle, developed by Frank Christ, breaks down the different parts of studying: previewing, attending class, reviewing, studying, and checking your understanding. Although each step may seem obvious at a glance, all too often students try to take shortcuts and miss opportunities for good learning. For example, you may skip a reading before class because the professor covers the same material in class; doing so misses a key opportunity to learn in different modes and to benefit from the repetition and distributed practice that youll get from both reading ahead and attending class. Understanding the importance of all stages of this cycle will help make sure you dont miss opportunities to learn effectively.

Right now, skilled trade work is in high demand and it pays well. If you hate sitting in a classroom for hours on end, you might want to look into getting vocational training. There are tons of cool options.

    You could:

    • Study electrical work or plumbing.
    • Learn to work on cars.
    • Style hair.
    • Train to be a paralegal or legal assistant.
    • Pilot planes.

These are skills that can lead to well-paying, in-demand jobs.;Plus, its much less expensive to go to a trade school. The overall average cost of vocational school in the United States is about $33,000.
