But if you want to pursue a college baseball scholarship, youll face a completely different process with several different variables at play. Recruiting Guidelines By Position What College Coaches Look For

Catcher, Pitcher, Short Stop, 2nd Base, Center Field are usually occupied by the team’s best athletes. When recruiters and scouts come to a game they usually look up the center of the field unless they come to see a specific player who may be on the corners.

Recruiting is not necessarily about game performance. Many will just watch the pregame warm up where they are guaranteed to see the player make a play. He watches the fluidity, the softness of the hands, the footwork, velocity which the player throws and his accuracy. If a coach want to see a whole game they will be looking for ATTITUDE and HUSTLE that leads by example and be motivated to play at his ability level.

As you can guess, the 8 teams that make up the Ivy League Baseball Conference are the 8 member universities of the Ivy League.

The championship series starts as a round robin format, where the best two teams then compete at a best of three format. The winning team then earns the conferences automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

Which Positions Receive The Most Athletic Scholarships

For college baseball, there is a maximum of 11.7 scholarships offered per Division 1 team, 9 per Division 2 team, 12 per NAIA team and 24 per junior college team. Baseball is an equivalency sport for NCAA scholarship purposes, so partial scholarships can be awarded to athletes. With that said, most scholarship money goes to pitchers and after that, the best athletes are prioritizedtypically meaning up-the-middle players like shortstops, center fielders and catchers. Players with elite skills like hitting and speed will also get more offers. Additionally, it can be a big boost to be a left-handed player, whether its a pitcher or hitter. On the flip side, corner outfielders and second basemen will receive the fewest scholarship offers.

As a college baseball prospect you want to acquire the skills of communicating with coaches and marketing your skills. The most effective form of communication is via email. Before attending any baseball camps, it is important to build up a relationship with the coacheswho will be in attendance. Letting them know your name and your interest in their school will put you on the top of their list to watch that day.

A good email will include your name, year of high school graduation, position, recent stats and history, as well as a video if you have one. The most important part of the email will be your reason why you see yourself as a good fit at the college. It is important that your reason is not generic like I like the campus, or it has a good reputation. The best reasons are specific, accurate, and unique to every person. Creating this story type reason will give you an advantage over the other prospects at the camp. Psychologically, with a good reason why, the coach will be rooting for you to perform well that day.

How Do I Get Noticed

To begin, you should be sure to read the guidelines posted at the NCAA website at this link, and be sure to register with the NCAA eligibility center. The website provides a great four year plan for students starting at Grade 9, though its never too late to get started.

Afterwards, you must make sure that you meet all the requirements set by the NCAA for Division I athletic recruitment. A major part of this requires that you are more than a great athlete, you also have to be a great student.

How Does Division Iii Baseball Recruiting Work

Division III baseball, in my view, is quite different than the upper divisions of college baseball. There are many programs and the talent level required to play varies greatly. I believe that any player who is serious about playing at the next level can achieve their goal and often times, itll be at a DIII school.

The biggest distinction between Division III institutions is that these schools do not offer athletic scholarships. But that should not discourage a player from looking at a Division III school. And just because these schools dont offer athletic aid, it doesnt mean that there arent some very good players and programs at the DIII level. In 2014, 15 Division III players were selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

If you play college baseball, odds are youll play at the D3 levelThere are roughly 375 institutions that have baseball programs that compete at the DIII level. More players will play DIII baseball than any other division of college baseball.

A majority of the DIII schools are small, private, liberal arts colleges. The schools range from ultra-selective to less selective in terms of admission requirements. With the majority of these schools being private, the first hurdle for parents to clear is the cost of attending these schools. Given the large numbers of private schools that make up DIII, its worth diving into a bit deeper and learning how this works. You might be surprised.

Once I began recruiting at the College Baseball/NCAA level 6 years ago, I soon realized that more and more players these days are making their decisions based on unrealistic expectations for their baseball career path.

Its not just about baseball as a college student-athlete, academics are extremely important.

For some players with poor grades or test scores in high school, the question of should you go JUCO? is an easy one: YES.

Lots of young athletes arent big fans of school. And if you dont put forth enough effort in high school, a lot of doors can end up closed because of the academic standards 4-year schools require for eligibility.

So if perhaps you didnt put forth a great effort in high school but are now ready to turn it aroundor you just dont have any other optionsplaying college baseball at a two-year school can be a great choice.

Wheaton College baseball coach Eric Podbelski talks about his baseball program, his recruiting efforts and his success building one of the Top Division III programs in the area.

The Wheaton baseball program was started in 1996 and since then hasnt looked back. In a few short years Podbelski built Wheatons program into on of the top programs in the country, compiling a record of 55-221-5, one of the highest winning percentages among active NCAA D3 coaches. In 2015, Wheaton won its 16th NEWMAC regular season title. In 2017, Wheaton took its third trip to the NCAA D3 Championship.

How many States do you actively recruit in?We cover most of the six New England States, but focus in on some key regions within those States. There is a great deal of talent in Massachusetts alone as well as Connecticut where baseball is very popular at the high school level. We also do a lot of recruiting in the Southern Maine area where we feel the baseball talent there is actually under-recruited. Vermont is a little difficult because of the shorter season and spread out area. We have also expanded our efforts into New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, but I think we are going to slowly cut back our area so we can see less kids more often, instead of traveling a greater distance and maybe seeing a kid play one time.

We also attend an invitation-only Stanford Baseball Camp for one week to evaluate over 200 players.

Who Is Most Affected

Around college baseball, nearly everyone points to the high school class of 2021 as the most impacted by the dead period. College baseball recruiting has accelerated and the top players in the class are nearly all committed at this point. Only 19 of the top 300 players in the class, according to Perfect Game, are uncommitted. But a much higher percentage of players below that tier is not committed. Those players are the ones coaches point to as most affected by the dead period.

It hurts rising seniors and schools that work slower, one recruiting coordinator said. A lot of kids commit to solid programs going into June of their senior year.

If you dont have 21s right now, youd be like, What in the world are we going to do? another recruiting coordinator said. There are guys who are uncommitted who are going to end up in junior college because were not going to be able to see them.

College baseballs powerhouses have, for the most part, filled up their 2021 class, maybe holding open a spot or two for a late bloomer or a decommitment. But many other programs around the country are not done with their 2021 class. The summer before a players senior year of high school is an important developmental time and plenty of players make strides during that time that ultimately lead to them getting offered a scholarship. With coaches unable to see and track those players, there is less time to find the late bloomers.
