Crosby And Wolfe: 19761986

Harold Crosby, the university’s second president and the founding president of the University of West Florida in Pensacola, agreed in 1976 to serve a three-year “interim” term. Under his leadership, FIU’s North Miami Campus located on the former Interama site on Biscayne Bay was opened in 1977. State senator Jack Gordon was instrumental in securing funding for the development of the campus. President Crosby emphasized the university’s international character, prompting the launching of new programs with an international focus and the recruitment of faculty from the Caribbean and Latin America. President Crosby’s resignation in January 1979 triggered the search for a “permanent” president.

Gregory Baker Wolfe, a former United States diplomat and then-president of Portland State University became FIU’s third president, from 1979 to 1986. Corinthian Colleges List As Biden Cancels Student Loan Debt For 500k People

The Biden administration will cancel the student loan debt of around 560,000 borrowers who attended schools formerly operated by for-profit education provider Corinthian Colleges.

The Department of Education announced the decision on Wednesday, which will see around $5.8 billion in student debt cleared, as the administration considers broader action on student loan forgiveness.

Corinthian Colleges has been accused of predatory and unlawful practices and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015. It had faced a lawsuit from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Vice President Kamala Harris also pursued the company when she was attorney general of California.

At its height, Corinthian Colleges was one of the largest for-profit education companies in North America with more than 100 campuses and more than 80,000 students were enrolled in 2013.

There were approximately 19.7 million college students in the U.S. in 2020, according to National Center for Education Statistics data.

Do Top Schools Attract Wealthy Students

A handful of recent studies, most notably a study released from a team led by Harvard economist Raj Chetty, has shown that the top U.S. schools attract a significantly higher proportion of students from the wealthiest income brackets than they do the bottom. One of the big takeaways from Chetty and his teams study is that students from families in the top 1%those who make more than $630,000 a yearare 77 times more likely to be admitted to and attend an Ivy League school than students coming from families who make less than $30,000 a year.

Another interesting takeaway from Chettys study is that at 38 U.S. collegesincluding five of the eight Ivy League schoolsmore students come from the top 1% of the income scale than come from the bottom 60%. That information confirms data found in an earlier study from Anthony Carnevale and Jeff Strohl of Georgetown Universitys Center on Education. In their examination of college demographics between 1982 and 2006, they found that just 14% of undergraduates at the most competitive schools come from families who make up the bottom half of the U.S. income distribution.
