How Do I Choose The Right Career For Me

Which Career Is Right For Me?

The first step in choosing the right career for you is to figure out how you learn best. There are a couple of different types of learners, and Im going to discuss each one in hopes that it will help you identify how you absorb information!

Visual Learner: If this is how you learn best, reading about how much certain careers pay or what the job entails probably isnt helpful for your learning process. You need to see pictures or colors instead of words when absorbing information!

Auditory Learner: The exact opposite of visual learners, auditory learners benefit more from hearing things rather than seeing them. If youre an auditory learner, how-to videos on YouTube about how to do your job would be more helpful for you!

Kinesthetic Learner: Kinesthetic learners learn by doing and moving around. You might be a kinesthetic learner if you cant sit still very long or enjoy physical activities as part of learning.

Once youve figured out how best you learn, you can use that distinction to pick a career path. For instance, kinesthetic learners work well in physical jobs, auditory learners excel in jobs where transcription or translation are needed, and visual learners work well in jobs where images, presentations, or graphics are important.

Your high school guidance counselor or college academic advisor may tell you to follow your passion, but for a lot of us, theres one overriding question wheres the money?

As always, the highest of the highest-paying careers are in medicine, for obvious reasons the healthcare system is in a long period of phenomenal growth, and the barriers to entry are so high that the field is self-selecting quite simply, between the education, the stress, and the responsibility there just arent many people who are cut out to be surgeons, physicians, or nurse midwives. If you can make it, you can make top salaries.

First Learn About Yourself

How to Find the Right Career for Me Poster successatschool

Your first order of business is to learn as much as possible about yourself. If you think you know all there is to know, the results of a self assessment will be eye-opening. A career development professional, for example, a career counselor or career development facilitator, can help you with this step but don’t be discouraged if you can’t afford to hire one.

Many public libraries offer free career planning services. If your local library doesn’t, the librarian can suggest one that does. He or she can also recommend local agencies that offer career counseling. Instead of meeting with a counselor, there are also free or low-cost career assessments available online.

If you attended college, consider contacting that institution’s career services office. As an alumnus, you may be able to access their services. Some colleges and university career offices offer their services to members of the local community. In addition, academic programs that train career counselors often have students work with clients at no or a low cost to gain experience.
