Understand Rather Than Memorize Math
All too often, students will try to memorize a procedure or sequence of steps instead of looking to understand why certain steps are required in a procedure. For this reason, it’s important for teachers to explain to their students the why behind math concepts, and not just the how.
Take the algorithm for long division, which rarely makes sense unless a concrete method of explanation is fully understood first. Typically, we say, “how many times does 3 go into 7” when the question is 73 divided by 3. After all, that 7 represents 70 or 7 tens. The understanding of this question has little to do with how many times 3 goes into 7 but rather how many are in the group of three when you share the 73 into 3 groups. 3 going into 7 is merely a shortcut, but putting 73 into 3 groups means a student has a full understanding of a concrete model of this example of long division.
Strategy : Memorize The Formulas And Common Math Facts
If you’re still flipping to the front of the section to look at the math formulas, you haven’t gotten to understand SAT Math well enough yet.
Not only does this cost you time, it also indicates that you haven’t practiced enough with SAT Math to have the required formulas come to you fluidly.

Strategy : Use Only Realistic High
After reading the three strategies above, you might be hyped up to go out and practice.
The question is – what are you actually going to use to study? Books? A prep program?
Be really careful about which sources you choose to use. Honestly, most of them are pretty bad.
To begin with, most books that claim to be adapted for the New SAT are actually just minimally edited versions of their Old SAT books. Math has changed a lot between the two versions of the test, both in terms of which skills are tested and how the questions are structured. The worst books copy over the exact same questions from the Old SAT book – this is hugely misleading and can end up wasting a ton of your time with no improvement in score.
Second, a lot of prep programs and books don’t have very realistic SAT Math questions. They’re either too hard, too easy, or structured incorrectly. The root of this problem is lack of true understanding of the SAT Math section. Without going through a full question by question analysis of the test, you really can’t understand the test deeply. This means your materials will be terrible.

As you likely already know, Section 3 is a Math section forbidding the use of calculator, with 20 questions. Section 4 is a Math section that allows calculator, with 38 questions.
The calculator is really useful for certain questions that require complex calculations, like multiplying decimals together or taking square roots of weird numbers.
However, in many other situations, it’s too much of a crutch, and it can make you soft. Learning to solve questions without the use of a calculator will strengthen your math intuition and force you to understand the underlying math, rather than relying on a calculator.
Actually, every question on the SAT is solvable without a calculator. What Is The Format Of The Math Sat
The SAT actually contains two separate math tests. The scores for each of the math tests are combined into one single scaled Math score ranging from 200-800. The SAT Math tests consist of 58 questions completed over the course of 80 minutes. Most of these questions are multiple-choice, but 13 are grid-in questions that require you to come up with your own response rather than selecting your answer from the available choices.
The first Math SAT test that youll take is called the Math Test Calculator. As the name implies, you are allowed to use your calculator on this portion of the SAT. The test consists of 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 grid-in answers, which youll complete over the course of 55 minutes.
The second Math SAT test that youll take is the Math Test No Calculator. As you might have guessed, you are not allowed to use a calculator on this part of the SAT. - Be careful with calculator entry. A missing parentheses makes a big difference. “4 + 9 / 2″ is completely different from ” / 2″
- Avoid bubbling errors by using the Quick Tip above.
