Other Ways To Receive Financial Aid

If you don’t qualify for the Pell Grant, there are still a few ways you can secure funding for your college education. You can try:

  • Getting Federal Student Loans: If you don’t qualify for the Pell Grant, you may still qualify to receive some aid from the federal government in the form of federal student loans. While you will have to repay these, they can still be a great way to fund your college education.

  • Getting Private Student Loans: If you need additional funding for your schooling, you can also apply for private student loans through private lenders. These often have higher interest rates, but still work well to secure funding for school.

  • Sign Up For a Work-Study Program: Many colleges will offer a work-study program, allowing students to work a few hours a week to reduce their total tuition costs across the board.

Where To Look How To Qualify And When Your Search Should Begin

For some, the word scholarship conjures up visions of super-intelligent college-bound kids with astronomical SAT and ACT scores or star athletes scooping up full-ride four-year awards. The truth is that only about 0.1% of college students receive full-ride scholarships each year.

Compare that with the six million active college scholarships worth $30 billion that can be found using Sallie Mae’s Scholarship Search tool. With that much available aid, your chances of getting a scholarship may be better than you think.

In some cases, your school may offer education grants directly to students .

As with state and federal programs, these grants exist to help students with a high level of financial need. Typically, filling out the FAFSA is sufficient to determine your eligibility. But some schools may require additional paperwork.

For instance, take a look at the CSU Tuition Assistance Grant.

This program uses a combination of federal, state, and institutional grants to cover 50 to 100 percent of a students share of base tuition.

To be eligible, a student needs to be a Colorado resident, enroll full-time at CSU, complete the FAFSA, and fill out a one-time institutional aid application.

As with state and federal grants, your colleges financial aid office is your best resource for finding institutional grants.

Federal Grants That Pay For College
