What Kind Of Questions Are On The Fafsa

FAFSA 2022- 2023: A Step-by- Step Guide to Filling Out the FAFSA Form

In total, the FAFSA contains over 100 questions. Luckily, many of them are straightforward, including your name, address, SSN, date of birth, marital status, and email address. However, some of the questions can be complicated and tricky to answer.

Some questions that tend to confuse students are:

Are you interested in being considered for work-study?

The best way to answer this question is always yes. Answering yes to this question doesnt mean that you need to accept a work-study award if youre eligible for it. It simply means that you want to see whether youre eligible or not.

As of today, what is the net worth of your investments, including real estate? Dont include the home you live in.

Knowing the right way to answer this question can help ensure you receive all of the aid for which youre eligible. Even reporting a few extra thousand dollars in assets can significantly decrease your eligibility. It may be a good idea to move around your assets prior to answering the question. Since the FAFSA asks about your investments on the day you fill it out, you have up until that day to get things in order.

Your parents name, SSN, and date of birth.

As of today, what is the net worth of your parents investments, including real estate? Dont include the home in which your parents live.

How many people are in your household?

How many people in your household will be college students between July 1st, 2021 and June 30th, 2022?

Fill Out All Fafsa Sections

First, choose the correct FAFSA year. Youll see two options, one for the current academic year and one for the next year. You want next year. Then complete each section.

Be sure to check the box that you want to be considered for work-study. Doing so simply gives you the option to use it if its awarded, but down the road when you get your financial aid award, you dont have to accept it if you dont want to.

Many families qualify to use whats called the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to populate the student and parent income sections . Youll see a Link to IRS button if you do qualify, which links you to the IRS site with your FSA ID. The DRT populates tax return information directly from the IRS. Experts recommend using the tool because its safe, fast and accurate it eliminates the chance you might make a mistake when entering your financial information. But note that the FAFSA form wont display numbers only the phrase Transferred from the IRS so you wont be able to verify numbers against your tax return.

While the tool to retrieve data from the IRS has been a big help in simplifying families interaction with the FAFSA, there are a couple of DRT caveats:

Not Filling Out Additional Applications

States and colleges may require other applications for scholarships and grants in addition to filling out the FAFSA. Check state and college websites for a list of deadlines you need to know. Also, call the financial aid office to find out about scholarships or grants you could qualify for that you may not know about. Fill out these applications as soon as possible in case some are first-come, first-served or ask for additional information.

Do You Need Both Fafsa And Css

You need to fill out a FAFSA to be considered for federal student aid, and you need to fill out a CSS Profile to be considered for state and institutional aid through schools that require it.

If youâre filling out a CSS, you should also complete a FAFSA.

We recommend that every student applying for college fill out a FAFSA even if you donât want student loans because you could be eligible for scholarships or grants you werenât expecting. If your school or program is on the College Boardâs list of CSS Profile participating schools and scholarship programs, you should also submit a CSS to be considered for non-federal aid.

If your school isnât on that list, you donât have to submit a CSS Profile, but youâll still be considered for non-federal aid. The institution will use the info on your FAFSA to determine your eligibility for both federal and non-federal aid.

Am I A Dependent Or Independent Student

Enter Your And Your Parents Financial Information

The next section of the FAFSA is often the most frustrating to finish. In this section, you provide information about your and your parents income based on previous tax returns. To make this part simple and quick, you can use the built-in IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool links your FAFSA form with the IRS so that you can securely transfer your tax information from the appropriate year into your FAFSA form. Using this tool helps ensure that your information is accurate and saves you tons of time. For added security, the form will not display your tax return information. Instead, it will appear as Transferred from the IRS. Generally, students who use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool dont need to provide copies of their own or their parents tax returns to their school.

Most students who filed or had parents file a tax return within the given year are able to use the tool. However, those who filed foreign tax returns, Puerto Rican tax returns, or Forms 1040NR or 1040X are required to enter the information manually. Individuals who are married and filed their tax returns either as Married Filing Separately or Head of Household also need to manually enter the information.

How To Protect Your Color At Home

Amping Up for the FAFSA

To maximize the life and luster of your professional color, use a shampoo thats specially formulated to hydrate and protect color-treated hair. It may seem insignificant, but it can make a world of difference. Honestly, sometimes I wish I could go home with my clients to be there as they take care of their hair, jokes Pitocco. Your at-home hair care routine is the most important thing, so please invest in a shampoo, conditioner, or hair cleanser that wont strip your color. If you just spent $300-plus on color and youre now washing with a $6 shampoo from the drugstore, I promise you that youre going to be left upset.

For her part, Pitocco prefers Hairstorys New Wash shampoo replacement to gently cleanse hair without stripping it of its color. It is meant to be used in place of shampoo and conditioner, she explains. The main cleansing agent in it is aloe, so its extremely nourishing and moisturizing for the hair. Theres no detergent in this cleanser, so it wont strip your color at all because its not sudsing up and opening the cuticle of the hair. Instead, it breaks up and removes all the dirt and grime while leaving your natural oils on the hair, which is extremely important for a healthy head of hair. This has made the biggest difference for all my clients! Not just for maintaining the color they get at the salon, but for a healthier scalp and head of hair, too.

Gorgeous Dark Blonde Hair Colors To Try At Your Next Salon Appointment

From rich caramel hues to cool, ashy tones, theres no shortage of gorgeous dark blonde hair colors to experiment with this season.

While theres no rule saying you must dye your hair darker come fall, there is something about the longer nights and cooler temperatures that makes bright, sun-drenched strands feel a bit out of place this time of year. As such, its no coincidence that the hair color trends for fall lean a bit warmer and darker, inspiring even those with the most flaxen shades to opt for a more seasonally appropriate dark blonde hair color.

I actually love when the seasons change because it means I get to revamp the tones and contrasts on my clients hair, says Jenna Pitocco, a New Yorkbased hairstylist and cofounder of the Love, Dunette salon. As we enter fall/winter, its important to keep in mind that our complexions shift now that we arent in the sun anymore. Speaking for the majority of clients, I normally do see a deeper color trend becoming popular at this time of year. This fall theres already been a lot of inspiration pictures that have warmer, darker blondes, which is my favorite! Thats what will keep your skin glowing throughout the year.

Since quarantine, a lot of our clients have been coming in wanting a more lived-in, rooted look, says Lee. The days of platinum blonde to the scalp are dwindling because everyone is wanting color that will last! So balayage and highlights are the go-to right now, to break up that regrowth.

What Is The Difference Between A Fafsa And A Css Profile

TL DR: A FAFSA is the application schools use to determine a studentâs eligibility for federal financial aid.

A CSS Profile is used by some schools and scholarship programs to determine eligibility for non-federal aid.

All students should fill out the FAFSA each year, but you only have to submit a CSS Profile if your school requires it.

What Is A Fafsa

FAFSA â the Free Application for Federal Student Aid â is the form parents and students fill out to qualify for federal financial aid for college.

You put your familyâs relevant financial information into this form, and once theyâve accepted the student for admission, schools use it to determine how much and what kind of federal aid youâre eligible to receive.

Schools use information from the FAFSA to determine eligibility for every kind of public financial aid, including scholarships, grants, work-study and federal student loans.

Who needs a FAFSA

Every student planning to attend an accredited college or university should fill out the FAFSA, regardless of your household income or whether you plan to take out a student loan.

When to fill out the FAFSA

FAFSA day is October 1. This is when the application opens at fafsa.ed.gov for the next academic year. Note: some states have set their submission deadline as early as December.

Pro Tip: Fill out the FAFSA as early as you can because some states dole out aid on a first-come, first-served basis.

You have to fill out the FAFSA each year you want federal aid, starting with the October before your first year of college. The Federal Student Aid office makes it simple, though: you can submit a renewal FAFSA in subsequent years, and the form will be pre-filled with your information. You just have to check it to update anything that has changed.

Information You Need to Fill out a FAFSA

When Should You Be Applying For Aid Then

So, to review, youve established that FAFSA forms are available and you know the date theyre due. Now that you know the basics, you can discern when you should apply for aid. As a general rule, you wont actually receive any money until youve enrolled at a college. You can apply at any time, even before youve chosen a school. However, funds wont be transferred until youve made it official. Since students have different timelines of receiving acceptance letters, this is where your personal states deadline comes in. If you notice that your deadline is looming and you still havent received a letter of acceptance from your top school, you should fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible regardless.

Applying for financial aid is completely within your control while receiving an acceptance letter in the mail is not. Personally, I prefer to complete the parts of a process I can control as soon as possible. As we figured out earlier, when it comes to federal aid, you do not have to be enrolled in a school to apply for funds. But, you do have to be enrolled to receive the funds. Theres no harm in completing the FAFSA process as early as possible, as long as youre certain of your choice to apply for federal aid.

Things To Do To Prepare For The Fafsa

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, otherwise known as FAFSA, is the first stop for millions of families looking to cover the cost of a college education. For the 2020-2021 school year, 84% of parents plan to fill it out, according to a recent College Ave Student Loans survey of parents of college students conducted by Barnes & Noble College Insights.

Its the 10-page form that everyone must complete to receive financial aid from the federal government. Some states and colleges also use the FAFSA to award state and institutional aid. Its also the main source of funding for more than 13 million college-bound students each year.

Financial aid can significantly reduce the cost of college, says Erin Powers, spokesperson for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Applying for aid all starts with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid .

With so much on the line, theres no question that filling it out can be nerve-wracking. Make any mistakes, and it could delay your financial aid offer and you could lose thousands of dollars that would help you pay for college.
